AugustI tempted fate last month by asking where the sun was so I’m going to pray for it thismonth to make sure some of the great events lined up for August get the weather theydeserve.

Indoors or outdoors, there’s plenty to do in Oxfordshire in August. Why not visit The New Theatre,or Creation Theatre at the Said or Oxford Shakespeare Company at Wadham College?

If you want to treat yourself, pay Wagamama a visit, our lead article, or The Tree in Iffley. Deservepampering? Why not go to Philosophy Hairdressing for a new you!

There are the usual listings, features and great suggestions for something to do in August but ifyou are looking for a bargain, don’t forget our wonderful vouch offers - see page 6.

The 2012 Oxfordshire Restaurant Awards are coming up in September so don’t forget to vote orbuy a ticket - see www.oxfordshirerestaurantawards.com.

An animated buzz greeted us as we stepped into Wagamama, a Japanese inspiredrestaurant located just beside the historical Covered Market. Its open and friendlyatmosphere attracts hungry flocks from every age group and it did not fail towork its charm on us too. Sparingly yet elegantly spaced with tables set closelyto one another, the room exudes an air of open luminescence.

Once inside, we were welcomed and swiftly led to our table by one of the efficientteam members. Then it came to the difficult part of our experience: the agony ofchoice! The clearly laid-out menu includes an excellent glossary with helpfulinformation for allergy sufferers and for vegetarians. Wagamama concentrates mainlyon serving savoury dishes from traditional Japanese cuisine – a welcome refreshmentduring a time in which a 'Japanese Kitchen' is often regarded as a synonym of Sushi andSashimi.

After a considerable period, wavering between numerous mouth-watering options andbecoming hypnotised by the stream of wholesome, freshly prepared but speedilydelivered food escaping nearby us via the kitchen (each dish is served as soon as it iscooked to ensure freshness), we finally decided on our dishes.

Soon we found ourselves in front of generous portions of delicious, delicately presentedfood. The fact that even vegetarians can dine exquisitely here was instantly proven bythe Yasai Katsu Curry - an aromatic curry-rice accompanied by crispy aubergine andbutternut squash medallions embellished in breadcrumbs - and steamy Edamame asside-dish, the freshness of which was instantly noticeable. But carnivores don't miss outeither: The spicy Chilli Squid side-dish is a must for seafood-lovers and the GingerChicken Udon (Japanese egg-free noodles with chicken, beansprouts, egg and onions, spiced with chilli, ginger and coriander) turned out to be just as tasty as the rest.

Despite already being more than full after the main course and side dishes, the price-performance ratio (which can hardly be surpassed) meant that we were unable to resistthe dessert menu's lure. Our temptations lead us to a creamy Coconut Reika ice-creamtopped with passionfruit coulis to crest a thoroughly enjoyable meal.

We found that Wagamama not only offers delicious meals for agreeable prices but alsoprovides a first-class service in a friendly environment - a rare combination! Plus theyhave an extensive kids menu (complete with activities to keep kids entertained) as wellas offering take-out too! Unsurprisingly, the one thought flashing through our mindsas we stepped back out on to the street was: we must return, soon!

thursday 9th August - Sunday 2nd September: I have painted all my life, andmainly work in oil or pastel. When painting in oil I use either brushes or paletteknives and enjoy experiencing the different effects that media and methods canbring. It is exciting to follow the ways the medium takes me and I enjoy changing from one to the other. Mywork is therefore quite varied, depending on the medium I am using. Pastels can produce wonderful lacy anddelicate patterns of branches and the spaces in between, or the broken colour on the surface of pears andonions. A palette knife can be more dramatic, producing strong clear shapes and colour.

As any woman will tell you, hair can make or break the day – in the art of lookinggood, hair is where it begins and ends.

Lucky then that one of the country’s leading hairdressing groups can be found inOxfordshire. The Philosophy Hairdressing Group is doing for hairdressing what OxfordUniversity has done for academia. Indeed, Philosophy has single handedly put thecounty on the map for a level of hairdressing that is rarely found outside of London.A fact that is endorsed by regular mentions in Vogue, Sunday Times Style and MarieClaire.

So what makes Philosophy head of its game and a centre of hairdressing excellence?First and foremost, Philosophy’s Technical Director, Mark Creed, is the current Presidentof the Fellowship of British Hairdressing and, as such, is a tour de force in thehairdressing industry. He follows in a long line of celebrated hairdressers who havebecome household names. Charming and highly skilled, Mark has been one of theindustry’s statemen for over 26 years and is, quite literally, a colouring genius. He is thetechnician of choice of hair giants, L’Oreal, for whom he regularly travels the globe asthe company’s ambassador, imparting his knowledge in educational seminars andphoto shoots. What Mark doesn’t know about colouring, quite frankly is not worthknowing. His high profile in the industry reaffirms the Philosophy Group’s much-deserved status as one of the country’s premier artistic and technically excellent salons.

Secondly, under the stewardship of directors, Sam Harding, Luke Anderson and AndrewHall, Philosophy is at the cutting edge of style. Whether it’s a classic look or the moreavant-garde, you know you’re in good hands when you’re in the company of a uniqueaward winning style team who have learnt the art of knowing when to suggest andwhen to listen. It’s a team that is in constant demand in the UK and abroad.

Thirdly, a visit to one of the three state-of-the-art Philosophy salons in Oxford, Witneyand Abingdon is quite simply a joy! They make the whole hairdressing experience atreat – the non-pressured ambience leaves you feeling pampered and special. Littlewonder then that Philosophy is now the hairdressing mecca for a discerning clientelethat extends far outside of the county.

Philosophy Hairdressing 19-21 Woodstock Road,Oxford OX2 6HA Tel: 01865 553553 Web: www.philosophyhair.co.uk

As President of the Fellowship of British Hairdressing, Mark Creed had the privilege of interviewing the

legendary Vidal Sassoon CBE, shortly before his death in May, and presenting him with the Ultimate Icon

Award on behalf of the Fellowship.

The Tree Hotel in Iffley comprises the well-known Annora restaurant whichunusually has head chefs who each specialise in Indian, Thai and European cuisine, producing a menu bursting with flavour.

Hotel room occupancy is up by 20% in comparison with last year and the hotel has anewly refurbished outside area and children’s play area. The recent launch of traditionalcurry take-away tiffins is proving popular with eco-conscious customers and the hotelcan cater for up to 30 delegates for business conferences and up to 100 guests forprivate functions and weddings.

Best known though for its unusual but delicious variety of cuisines - does the menu atthe Tree Hotel in Iffley live up to the hype? We asked a few diners what they thought.

Richard Towers says: “I had heard about the Tree Hotel in Iffley and had been meaningto visit for a few months. My wife ordered a sirloin steak whilst I opted for one of theirrenowned curries, the Chicken Tikka Masala. Neither of us was disappointed. The steakwas cooked to perfection and the curry tantalised the taste buds although there wasa secret ingredient in there that I still can’t quite put my finger on. Excellent service, added to by the buzzing atmosphere. A magnificent experience for a foodie.”

Nicola Balogh agrees: “I have eaten at the Tree Hotel in Iffley a few times and am neverdisappointed. The setting is so lovely in Iffley and it’s nice that we can order differentcuisines according to what we feel like. I would urge everyone to try the InternationalSunday Buffets which are amazing.”

MD Kavita Pal has high hopes for 2012: “Our committed staff bring out the best in us.We continue to have a reputation for excellent service, and an unusual variety ofcuisines on our menu has meant our loyal and growing clientele keep coming back!”

The Omshanti Group has opened fourth hotel, a new 10-room boutique hotel calledthe Bocardo situated on George Street in Oxford above Jamie’s Italian.
