Lead Article

There is something for everyone to enjoy at Blenheim Palace, and no matter howmany times you visit you’ll find there is always something new and delightful tobe discovered.

In March Blenheim Palace is hosting a fascinating exhibition about Gladys, Duchess ofMarlborough. Gladys Deacon was second wife to the 9th Duke and was one of themost fascinating, brilliant and yet eccentric Duchesses of the twentieth century. Shewas the American mistress of Blenheim Palace during the 20's and early 30's who inequal measure fascinated visitors with her beauty and wit – and alarmed them withher wildness and eccentricity. This special exhibition displayed in the Long Library until25th March features beautiful photography, costumes of the era, personal letters andRoyal invitations.

2011 at Blenheim Palace looks set to be one of the best years yet and is packed withbrand new events and activities. Peppa Pig and George as well as Ben and Holly from“Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom” will be coming to meet families in the PleasureGardens at Easter, a Royal Joust will celebrate the wedding of HRH Prince William andKate Middleton on 29th April, there will be Outdoor Cinema in May and the CLA GameFair returns in July.

Every year Blenheim Palace faces the challenges of keeping pace with the maintenance, restoration and conservation of the maintenance, restoration and conservation of thePalace and its grounds. Despite Blenheim Palace and Park being one of the first WorldHeritage Sites designated in the UK, it is the only one that does not attract any formof public or Heritage Lottery Fund funding, this is due to it effectively being in privateownership.

This year two major projects are taking place: the repair and redecoration of the GreatHall windows, due for completion at the end of June 2011, and the repair andrestoration of the South Front steps, due for completion at the end of May 2011. Weapologise for any inconvenience these essential works may cause. Visitors to the Palacemake a hugely important contribution to the maintenance of this magnificent Palacefor future generations. Thank you for your support.

Make sure you get your amazing value Annual Pass now so you don't miss out on a yearof great days out for the price of one day! The Blenheim Palace Annual Pass is freewhen you buy a ticket to the Palace.

Art & Antiques Review

This March the Sarah Wiseman Gallery is delighted to exhibit an enchanting

collection of paintings by Oxford artist Sarah Spackman.

In a move away from her better-known still life painting, Sarah has produced an

intimate collection of oils and watercolours exploring well-known views alongside

hidden corners of Oxford’s beautiful parks.

Her spontaneous painting style brings to life this new series of work, having been

inspired to return to landscape painting following a recent change of studios. These

scenes are on Sarah’s doorstep and form the backdrop to her daily life.

This brings a very human element to her paintings, drawing the viewer in to her

seemingly effortless brushstrokes which capture the essence of each location.

The changing quality of light brings a calm, reflective quality; afternoon light and long

shadows evoking a Sunday afternoon stroll in Oxford’s precious green spaces.

Those familiar with her work will recognise the strength of drawing also evident in her

still life paintings, giving structure and space for each image to inhabit.

Whereas lovers of Oxford will recognise some of the more traditional vistas and

activities – cricket in the University Parks; children playing; students lounging; the rivers;

the trees. This charming collection may well give them pause to think of these places

in a new light.

Sarah Spackman is a contemporary figurative artist, who both lives and works in Oxford

and has a studio at the Edith Road Workshops. She graduated from Camberwell School

of Art in 1981 and since 1986 has worked full time as an artist and exhibited regularly,

mainly in England, but also further afield in The Netherlands and Ireland.

Her work can now be found in many private collections, while a number of paintings

have been selected for the contemporary art collection of the AIB Bank. In 2010 Sarah

Spackman was selected for Discerning Eye Exhibition & had a feature about her and her

work published in Artists & Illustrators magazine, Sarah’s work was also discussed in a

Saturday Times Magazine Article about Josie Eastwood.

Kids Review

A haven of creativity and adventure set in the heart of the Cotswold landscape,The Bushcraft Company has to be the most exciting venue for kids Oxfordshirehas to offer.

As well as hosting nearly 200 schools each year for leaver’s trips, team-building eventsand weekend excursions, The Bushcraft Company runs activity camps for kids aged 7-18 throughout the school holidays, from its headquarters at Cornbury Park.

With a dizzying array of activities on offer, from lighting fires and cooking their ownsupper in underground ovens, to navigating across the ancient forest to rescuecasualties from a simulated plane crash, this is the kind of adventure every kid shouldbe involved in.

Forget hard hats, long queues, and concrete dormitories, The Bushcraft Company hasreally raised the bar on kids’ activity camps, with 3,000 acres of ancient woodland toexplore, a camp scattered with roaring fires and Scandinavian teepees to experience, and a host of activities that will spark even the most cynical of childish imaginations. The Bushcraft Company’s activity camps are a great choice for parents looking forsomething exciting for their kids to do during the holidays. This April you can choosefrom two Easter Camps, and you can also book places on their Summer Camps now, which are running each week of August and range from 1 day to 5 days.

The 24 hour Family Camp is also back by popular demand this spring, so head on downto The Bushcraft Company for a unique camping experience which is as cosy as it isexciting. Kids and parents alike can get stuck into all sorts of activities and games – oneof the parents can stay at home with the youngest and the others can hunker downfor a delicious meal around the fire and a good night’s sleep in one of the beautiful belltents.

Accommodation Review

For thousands of visitors to Oxford, The Randolph Hotel not only represents theperfect base, plum in the middle of Oxford city centre, but it has the undeniableclass, sophistication and style which underlines its five star status, unique inOxfordshire. Stefan Grünert and his partner, Jenny Woyand, had the enviable taskof reviewing The Randolph Hotel’s Presidential Suite.

It’s not every day you get the opportunity to review a stunning five star hotel, and thiswas an experience both of us will never forget. I must declare from the outset that wewere five star virgins, so spent the first couple of hours not speaking to eachother – wecouldn’t as our mouths were hanging open!

The entrance is impressive, with lush flags adorning the frontage and an impeccablydressed concierge there to greet us. We had that five star feeling already ……. and lovedit!

I was sold before we opened the doors to the suite, and, to be honest with you, if wehad walked in to a tiny room with two single beds and curtains hanging off the rail, myenthusiasm and excitement wouldn’t have waned. The reality was that we were inprobably the most stunning room we could have hoped for. Vast, stupendous, lavish, stunning and just very, very, very, very damn good. This was something we could bothget used to, but, alas, in the immortal words of Jennifer Hudson, this was for, ‘One NightOnly’.

If I told you there was a library in the suite, you probably wouldn’t believe me, but if Itell you it had two ‘deluxe’ lavatories, then that gives you an idea of the size of this‘chamber’. The King Sized bed looked good enough to stay in for a whole month, butno time to linger and gawp, it was time for dinner. I have never felt like a King before,or even a President, but as we closed the door on our favourite room in the wholeworld, I held Queen Jenny’s hand as we walked, at least ten feet tall, to the sweepingstaircase, and we floated all the way down to the bottom.

Just how can another hotel compete with this?

To visit The Randolph once in your lifetime is a must. Of course you don’t have to doit in quite the style we were fortunate enough to enjoy. There are a range of excellentrooms which can ensure your experience is just as spectacular. But for us, ourexpectations are now firmly fixed on the best room in the house, wherever we are!And we are both determined that, one day, we will return to relive the experience.

Restaurant Review

Oxford can now boast a new fine dining pub with an emphasis on top qualityfood served in a stunning city location. A team lead by entrepreneurs havetransformed the Red Lion on Gloucester Street into a premium dining experience, giving the pub a stylish, modern feel whilst promising to keep its traditional rootsalive. The Red Lion reopened on 25th February 2011, holding a series of pre-opening events and complimentary Menu Tastings to give Oxford a sneak previewof what they can expect.

Originally built in the early 1900’s, this Victorian pub retains many of its originalfeatures, yet will benefit from an updated interior suited to a dining experience. Withthe added attraction of a stunning garden and a location close to the theatre, The RedLion is sure to appeal throughout the year.

The pub has found a new lease of life and is being lovingly renovated with considerablepanache to enhance the range of eating opportunities in the vibrant city of Oxford. With a stylish bar, comfortable shabby chic furniture, with high quality fabrics in boldcolours and textures, the interior designers have created a feeling of occasion, and thedining room is furnished with modern chunky wooden tables and chairs and interestingartefacts.

This will be a dining experience created by a group who insist on high quality food instylish surroundings. Seasonal and fresh produce is at the heart of the menu, whichoffers traditional British classics alongside mellow Mediterranean dishes and traditionalfavourites such as fish and chips, fine steaks and perfect homemade pizzas. In thekitchen, Head Chef Christian Radu and his experienced team will be creating simple yetdelicious dishes with bags of comfort appeal as well as great seasonal specials. Highcalibre staff have been recruited and emphasis will be on training and attention todetail. Wearing leather aprons, smart shirts and jeans, the staff will look relaxed andfriendly, yet the emphasis will be very much on efficient service.

Working closely with their wine partners, the group have created their own exclusiveblends and even designed their own wine labels. Of course, there are all the usual grapevarieties that everyone loves from crisp white Pinots and grassy Sauvignons, to trendypinks and smooth, juicy reds such as Rioja and Merlot by the bottle or glass. There isalso a wide selection of cask ales, and super chilled draft and bottled beers, ensuring TheRed Lion appeals to everyone’s palate.

“We’re delighted to be transforming a pub in this beautiful city into something reallyspecial and that’s because we’ve put a lot of thought into every facet of this pub – thefood, the surroundings and the welcome from the team.” Says General Manager JacquesKieser. “The result is a pub with real ambience and delicious food. “

The Red Lion will be a welcome addition to the Oxford dining experience, helping tobanish the winter blues and ushering in the spring in the heart of this wonderful city.

The Red Lion have entered The 2011 In Oxford Magazine Restaurant Awards. Votefor them at www.inoxford.com.

Restaurant Review

Quod boasts a large bar, a stunning terrace and a rare city centre car park to therear, and represents in many ways the very best of what Oxford has to offer.Centrally located between University Colleges, with students, tourists and localprofessionals passing by its huge glass frontage, Quod is lively, stylish and greatfor a meal for two or a night out with a group of friends.

I have always been charmed by the buzz of Quod, but I was genuinely taken abackwhen I visited with my wife recently. I was mesmerised by the quality of the food, theservice and the whole dining experience. I chose the simple but effective avocadovinaigrette to start, whilst Tina plumped for the Jersey crab. Following a fish theme,Tina went with the salmon fishcakes with spinach and sorrel sauce, whilst I couldn’tresist the 8oz rib steak with chips and béarnaise.

Joe, who served us, was punchy, bright and articulate. He had the knowledge and theconfidence to make suggestions, genuine suggestions, not recommendations whichwould put a few extra quid on the bill. He made us both feel very comfortable. WhilstTina stayed true to her glass of champagne, Joe’s recommendation of a glass of RiojaCrianza complemented my steak perfectly. We even managed to share a treacle tartwith clotted cream. When I say share, there were two spoons – maybe so I didn’t feelquite so guilty!

Converted from a banking hall by owner Jeremy Mogford over eleven years ago, Quod, its popular private dining rooms and the Old Bank Hotel house an amazing collectionof twentieth century British art. Aberdeen Angus, lamb and pork are supplied by theowner’s Oxfordshire farm and fish is flown in twice weekly from Jersey.

Quod is open for breakfast from 7am, serves a two course set lunch menu for £11.95Monday to Friday from midday until 7pm, tea in the afternoon and a Sunday roastevery week. The bar serves coffee and cocktails and has an impressive wine list withimaginative bar snacks. Try and catch the Jazz every Sunday evening 5 – 7pm.

Quod is inspired, it is fun, but it is also a great dining experience. You can’t honestly askfor much more.
