CHAPTER III
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
A. The Objective of the Research
Speaking process through story joke it about learning process using a
story joke collaborated with dialogue or conversation with humorous stories, to
make the student is free to express in speaking activities. This involves students
and teachers, thus forming a good cooperation between students and students
and also between students and teachers
In this research, the researcher tries to make progress speaking ability
from the students. Story jokes are used here as conversation topics. Some jokes
are very good at illustrating social events while others distract from the lesson.
Attention must be paid to the selection of the type of the humor used.
B. The Place and Time of the Research
The research was taken a place at Junior High School Students Grade
VIII. This research takes place for one semester.
It used class VIII-A. Every class consists of twenty or thirty students.
The teaching process is carried from 07.15 am to 12.30 pm.

C. The Subject of the Research
The subject of the research is the students at Junior High School Grade
VIII,. The researcher took 20 sampling (students) for the research.
D. The Steps of the Research
The researcher get the data from the students especially for Grade VIII
Junior High School. The researcher attends to the data, which are the result of
applying teaching speaking using story joke.
In the following section, the researcher explains about procedure of
teaching, speaking using story joke. The procedure is dividing into four stages.
They are socializing the story joke, individually or grouping, distributing the
story jokes to the students, each student gets one unfinished story joke and the
punch lines sheet. Here reading becomes the preliminary activity before
students do oral activities. After giving the treatment, give the some practices
then made calculation of result from both test.
There, the research uses the descriptive analysis. Based on this method
the researcher use action research methodology, action research is
primarily qualitative. Qualitative research can be more
responsive to the situation. To my mind a need for
27
responsiveness is one of the most compelling reasons
for choosing action research.
In this chapter will be elaborated a little about the stages of action in the
classroom at each cycle. Every cycle consists of four steps. They are:
1. Planning, the researcher prepare the material that we will teach, making
lesson plan, syllabus and making evaluation that the will examine.
2. Action, the researcher teaches the students based on our plan, the material
and the method we are going to teach and give the evaluation as the result.
3. Observation, the researcher observing the result of the acting is it satisfied
or not.
4. Reflection, the researcher analyze the weaknesses of the students and the
process from begin
Based on the steps of classroom action research above, it can be
concluded that teacher as researcher has to prepare teaching process as good as
possible. Every step has to be followed in continuous and integrated. There are
cycles within cycles. Some extend across an entire study. Others occupy only
minutes or less. The result can be a very flexible and responsive process.
Action research is usually participative. This implies a
partnership between teacher and the students. The
28
teacher may find this more ethically satisfying. For
some purposes it may also be more occupationally
relevant.
E. The Technique of Data Collection
This thesis is an action research that gives description in qualitative
explanation. The researched was conducted in three cycles, and every cycle
consist four of steps, they are planning, acting, observing and reflecting.
Every cycle gives us the researcher that can be analyzed.
The expected targets of this study are as follows:
1. Level of mastery in the skills of speaking at schools average 6 and
expected after using the story joke will reach an average of 7.5 and 75 %
from 20 students to increase proficiency in English speaking.
2. 75 % of 20 students will be able to perform an exercise to speaking
activities.
3. 75 % of the students can follow learning using the story joke.
