A Prayer for Independence Day
God, source of all freedom, this day is bright with the memory of those who declared that life and liberty are your
gift to every human being.
Help us to continue a good work begun long ago. Make our vision clear and our will strong:
that only in human solidarity will we find liberty, and justice only in the honor that belongs to every life on earth.
Turn our hearts toward the family of nations: to understand the ways of others, to offer friendship, and to find safety only
in the common good of all. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CHURCH July 5,2020
P. Joachim Lepcha
“Father, Lord of heaven and earth, I thank you.” (Mt 11:25) Jesus teaches us how to be thankful to God. As bread once eaten is forgotten and the thirst that is quenched is gone, we tend to forget the gifts of God and we don’t remember them even when we come to him for new ones. We are slow to recognize blessings rather than evil. Ingratitude to God is a great folly because it is so unkind. This Sunday readings remind us that we need to thank God not for big blessings but also, for small one because our God has chosen to love and reveal himself especially to the small, poor and needy. When we recognize the blessings from God we become grateful people. We evaluate of our own essence of being children of God, we find the purpose of life. We start valuing more heavenly things and not the worldly. “Their interests are not in the unspiritual, but in the spiritual, and therefore, “not doomed to die.” (Rom 8:9-13) During this time of the COVID-19 crises, I spend most of my time in the Church praying. I urge my parishioners to pray Psalm 91 daily and if possible with your family gathered in his name. It is a very strong Psalm to ask God to destroy this sickness and protect each one of us. We are bound to feel weariness or loneliness; it has affected everyone’s life rich or poor, strong or weak, young or old. Everyone shares of weariness, burdensome or of life, feeling tired or fearful of the unknown, our future, vague or with dissatisfaction, having burdens or the responsibility to lead, direct, to be part of the Church and our society with the fear of getting sick, not being able to visit or take care of their elderly parents, friends and others. But Jesus says, “Come to me all you who labor and are overburdened and I will give you rest.”(Mt 11:28). Jesus assures us that he will take of us and we belong to him because Jesus says, “Everything has been entrusted to me by my Father.” We need to focus on our spiritual gifts that we have received in the past. Our spiritual strength is equally important to combat this pandemic. With the guidance of Fr. Martin and myself, the parish liturgical team has decided to have regular weekdays Masses starting July 6th (Morning 8:00 English Mass and 5:30 pm in Spanish). We will also have Weekend Masses: Saturday: 5:00 pm in English, Sunday: 8:00 am in English, 10:00 am in English and 12:00 pm in Spanish, 3:00 pm in Spanish. We will have the Sacrament of Confession on Saturday at 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm. Fr. Martin will be available outside in the parking lot for Confession. I will be sitting in the adoration Chapel also for confession. Those who cannot come for confession and or communion due to sickness or any other grave reason, please call the rectory office we will definitely visit you with the Sacrament. We assure you that we follow the guidelines given to us by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and the state of California on how to prevent COVID-19 and to be able to have religious functions maintaining everyone safe and sound taking precautions and preventative measures. Jesus invites us, “Come to me all you who labor and over burdened and I will give you rest.” (Mt 11:28) Let us go to him, he is our beginning and end, he is the source of life.
My dear brothers and sisters let us not give up on our Sunday Eucharist, our highway to heaven. When I visit the Blessed Sacrament as much as I can in the Church, I pray for you all! I ask our Mother of Perpetual Help to guide and intercede for us; I ask St. Joseph to protect our parishioners, friends, and relatives, our community, and country to lead us as he led Mother Mary to the unknown country of Egypt and brought her holy family back to Nazareth.

Tips for keeping calm and parenting during stressful times
We are living in unprecedented times, and many parents are stretched to capacity. The added stress of pandemic living can make it hard to parent calmly and effectively when children are acting out, but it’s important to remember that children are also going through a huge period of change right now. Instead of reacting in anger, try these ideas to keep your cool. Talk to a friend – many people are suffering from a lack of physical community, so reach out by phone or text. Pray together as a family, asking for patience, cheerfulness, and whatever other virtues you need to get you through the day. Set an example of forgiveness with your children — ask for it when you need it and grant it when they do. For more tips, get a copy of the VIRTUS® article, “Say it on repeat: I am going to keep my calm!” at https://lacatholics.org/did-you-know/.
