Habits can be positive or negative, depending of course on what kind of habit you are making. We want our kids to develop strong positive habits now, when they’re young, that will carry over into adulthood. Imagine the benefit of learning and sticking to “The 7 Habits of Happy Kids” and what an impact this could have on the kid’s futures and everyone around them! Use this craftivity to supplement your reading of Sean Covey’s “The 7 Habits of Happy Kids”, namely chapter one “Bored! Bored! Bored!”. When you have finished reading chapter one, proceed to the writing assignment in this packet. After that, head on over to the complete the “I’m Proactive” craft.

Print out all templates on cardstock or similar heavy duty paper for ease of tracing (or trace them on if you prefer). Be sure to select “Print fit to page” for best quality of printing. After you print out the templates, cut out the number of copies you need and either group these together for your students to trace their own boy/girl patterns, or trace on colored construction paper and pre-cut the parts for each student (this will depend on your time limitations and the abilities of your group).

Inside you’ll find:-”I’m Proactive” boy/girl Template & Directions {Hair, Head, Hands, Shoes/Proactive Steps, Thought Bubble}-Hair/bow Templates to make each hero into a boy or girl {You’ll need to cut 1 ½ x 4 inch stripes for legs, 2 for each student}-A Writing Prompt Page {I’m proactive and take the first step when...} (2 sheets to differentiate learning)-Proactive Writing Strips for shoes (cut down the middle and use as needed...each student will only chose two steps)

*You can, of course, just use one shoe and flip it over to trace the other shoe’s template. :-) You can also choose to forgo the laces and just have students draw in their own if you wish!

I say “I’m sorry” first.

I’m in charge of me.

I do a nice thing for someone.

I try a new activity.

I create my own fun.

I choose to be positive.

I try hard things.

I think and plan ahead.

I’m prepared for class.

Before using the writing prompt I suggest reading chapter one “Bored! Bored! Bored!” in the book “The 7 Habits of Happy Kids” by Sean Covey.

Then, brainstorm as a class a list of ways you can be proactive and take the first step (not being a victim). Go ahead and bring up some of the ideas for the shoe cutouts, if none of the students mention them. Have the students pick out two of their favorite “steps” to keep to glue to their shoe cutouts. Take the information you have about being proactive and create sentences with students such as “I’m proactive when…” “Being proactive means…” “I can take the first step by…”

After the brainstorming together, students can finish their sentence page “I’m proactive and take the first step when...” (I like to write common words on the board or refer the students to our word wall.) Depending on the ability of your group, students could pick one of the “steps” they chose for their shoes to finish their sentence or you may want students to come up with a new idea that wasn’t an option for the shoe cutouts. The choice is yours! Then, students can illustrate their writing with a picture.

When students have finished their writing, trim the edges if you wish and set them aside and proceed to the “I’m Proactive” craft. (You can do these on the same day or save the craft for another day depending on your time limit. I usually do a craftivity like this over a two day time span.)
