Both William and Elizabeth (Johnson) Bradt had innkeepers in their background. Elizabeth's father, George Johnson, had been an innkeeper. William Bradt's mother, Sara (Runchey) Bradt, came from a family of innkeepers. The families of both her parents, the Runcheys and the Huffmans, were innkeepers.

The new American Hotel has not yet secured a landlord, owing, we are informed, to the fact that its owner will not permit a bar on the premises . There are very f~w people p o E. s Es si n ·~ th e me ans to f urn ish s uch a 1 arg e ho us E- 1vho w i 11 t ake :he r i sk o ~ p l acing s o much ~oney i n a me r e boa rding t ouse , for a table alone does not ?ay. We believe there is a gene r al desi r e am ~ng t he b~ siness me n to see this much neede d enterprise open auspiciously , as they have long clamored and wished for some such place where they could congregate for business or pleasure, but all agreed on one point, and that is that any restriction or embargo ~nforced by the owner will be fatal to the enterprise, and any dictation as to how a man shall conduct his af fiars or to what use he shall put his money will be resented or severely let alone. Temperance coffee rooms and boarding houses have never been a success here in the past, and it is hard to figure out how they could be made so now or at any time in the very near future.

THE AMERICAN TO OPEN

Editors Herald: Were you not a little too previous in anno;.mcing that the- new American Hotel has "uot yet secured a landlord (tenant) owing to the fact that its owner will not p.:rr.;1 t a bar on the prerr.ises;" and "that t:-iere are few people possessing ths means to furnish such a large house who will take the risk cf plac ing so rnuch money in a mere boarding house?'' Surrounding associations always breed familiarity , and this may have led you to believe that a hotel cannot be run without a whiskey and beer mill attached. But, gentlemen, in this I think you are misto.ken . The "Hotel Bl:rr.s," in Syracuse, and many others which I could name in this State, are all running successfully without the damning influence of the rum traffic. The seventy or eighty saloons already in this place furnish enough victims for the workhouse, poorhouse, penitentiary and the gallows, without the American joining in to s;.,ell the numbers. You say "any restrictions or erabargo enforced by the owner will be fatal to the enterprise." F::ttal or not fatal, the American will be run a s a respectable first-class house; a place where the better classes o f our citizens, and the public, both gentlemen and ladies, will not be ashamed to go. The house was built of material, every bit of which was bought in Tonawanda, and every nail was driven by Tor.awanda labor and pc.id for i n cash by the owner, and any "dic':ation" by you as to whether it shall te run as a hotel or as a whiskey shop will be ".severely re .3ented." ''Temperance coffee houses" as you :all them are net quit9 so unpopular as you s uppose ~hem bo be. You, perhaps, seldom visit them, consequently know nothing about them. Worshippers at the shri~e of Baccus are net competent judges of sue~ matters. To relieve you cf any further anxiety in relation to the matter, I would say the American is let to a respectable tenant, who comes well recommended, and is well connected in this place. The house will open in due season, of which timely notice will be given .

Respectfully, E. Evans

I 1-17a]

from The Tonawanda Herald ~June 1884

Messrs. Bradt and Reardon have effected during the past week the purchase of the new American Hotel from its original owner and builder , Mr. E. Evans. We believe it is their intention to make it as near like a live hotel as possible by laying aside sentiment and gush and doing business on business principles. The house has been run on wind and water since its opening in January last, and proved a losing investment for its worthy proprietor, Wm. Bradt, as every businessman could easily predict. Under the new management we have no reason to doubt that the American will enter upon a career much more successful than the past has proved.

from The Tonawanda Herald 3'July 1884, p.3

The American Hotel yesterday opened a fine new bar on the main floor, placed pool and billiard tables in the basement, and made the premises look something like a public house, such as the average American business man is in the habit of seeing and p3tronizing in every live American town.

from The Tonawanda Herald 1 January 1885

one year ago today the American Hotel opened with a banquet by Mr. Bradt. After a years cares and vicissitudes ~e relinquishes his venture, and the house enters upon a fresh start under new management and conducted on different principles. A cold-water house in this town is an impossibility, a~d the experiment has ended just where most businesswen said it would.

Dear Elizabeth and Sam:

This is CANAL FEST week in t he Tonawandas'. I cli pped the enclosed p icture fro m the TONAWANDA NEWS and I thought that you mi ght be interested in it. I 'm doing more checking but I'm sure my mother told me that at one time in the 1880's her mother and father, William Bradt were the operators of the BORK HOTEL .

this hostelerie was loca ted on North Canal Street , wh ich was l ate r k nown as Nor~h Niaya ra Street.

Our weather here is s till very hot although we have had a couple of brief thunder showers that momentarily cooled it off.

The Bork Hotel was one of the show pl aces of the earlier Canal

It wasn't until a round the time of Worl d War I that t he character of the area changed. The industry is all go ne and $lbO,OOO.OO Town Houses are re p lacing the run down shacks of yesteryear.
