BRADT BRATT

The preparation of a "BRADT-BRATT GENEALOGY" is a rather large order, and these notes lay no claim to being any part of that undertaking.

As in the case of almost all descendants of the early settlers, there are broken or lost links in the chain of lineage, and inasmuch as certain data obtF ined from Church records, not generally available in most libraries has been of b E!nefit to some of my "fellow fans", I am putting these notes in some semblance of order, in the hop e that they may be helpful to others.

Moreover, they are interesting in view of the fact, that one branch of the family, descendants of ALBERT ANDRIESSEN BRATT, assumed the surname VAN DER ZEE .

The early record s of Albany, Fort Orange , Beverwyck and Rensselaerwyck , are re­plete with references to the early members of the BRATT family, and for a resume of some of these accounts, see "Swartwout Chronicles" , by Arthur James Wemse, N .A. and "Washington Ancestry", by Charles Arthur Hoppin.

Only such references will be quoted here in whole or in part, as are germane to the genealogical record.

In the absence of Family Bible records, wills, deeds, court records, etc., the writer has employed the formula of deduction in the manner of arrangement or group­ing of families, using thr ee factors, viz: family names; names . of sponsors at baptisms and propinquity.

The Norwegian and Swedish immigrants intermarried with the Dutch, and apparently accepted the very staunch Dutch custom in the naming of the children. The Dutch also exercised meticulous care in the selection of s ponsors at baptisms and this custom has been of inestimable help. Propinquity was a factor that strongly in­fluenced marriages in the early days (first cousin marrying first cousin) when settlements were sparce and few and far between. As an example, may I cite the Vital Records of the Island of Nantucket .

Genealogy may well be likened to an enormous jig-saw puzzle, a piece here and a

piece there, but never completed. The pieces representing human beings, your ancestors and mine. Ever the proceedure of error and correction, and as one man's "Gues s " is as good as another's. I sincerely trust that some of my errors in arrangement may be corrected.

As these notes are still in an embryonic stage, no index has been prepared. There are still "Pockets of resist ance" that have to be "mopped up."

Note: If Yates and Greene had access to records,denied to most of us, why are they not in agreement ?.

Yates calls the squaw(wife of Van Slyck)Alstock. Greene calls the squaw(wife of Van Slyck) Ots-toch. Yates calls the squaw(wife of Bradt)Kinetis. Greene calls the squaw(wife of Bradt)Wenutje.

To refute: July 20,1640.Kiliaen van Rensselaer wrote to Albert Andruesen, Tobacco Planter, "I have examined your letters and your accounts as well as those of arent .Your brother~' There are many other records to prove the relationship.
