  • GRAUL/GRAUEL

On coming to the Colonies the Graul/Grauel family of this study probably located in Berks County, Pennsylvania, although no direct line association has yet been established with the Berks County Grauls. Records indicate a Capt. George Graul served in the Berks County, Pennsylvania, Militia during the Revolutionary War, but it is not known if they apply to this George Graul. 1 Our first positive Graul lineage identifies with George Graul who was located on the Tax List of Bloom Township, Fairfield County, Ohio, in 1806.2

George was married to Elizabeth, whose maiden name is yet to be discovered. 3 It has been suggested that her surname was Alspach. 4 This is may be correct as the Alspach family was associated with the Grauls both by proximity and several proven family alliances. On 10 November 1807 George Graul and Jacob Alspach were grantees of the east half of Section 26, Township 14, Range 20 of Bloom Township. 5

Birth and death dates for George and Elizabeth Graul have not been found. George' s will was written 1 December 1817 and probated 9 October 1822 establishing an inexact time for his death. It is also known that Elizabeth was living in December, 1817, when George wrote his will. 6

Named in George Graul's will were the following children George, John, Elizabeth, Annemarie, Christina, Katarina, Peter and Jacob.7 John Graul is the child through whom this Graul line descends.

Statistics are also lacking concerning John Graul and his wife Elizabeth. 8 John Graul was born by 1775,9 and was deceased by 22 March 1832 when guardian papers were filed for his daughter Catherine. 10

With Catharine Graul records become more plentiful and more reliable. She was born 28 September 1812 in Bloom Township, Fairfield County, Ohio. 11 On 20 July 1841 she married Samuel Young, a tailor, and they subsequently moved to Pickaway County, Ohio.12 Samuel and Catharine (Graul) Young raised a large family and continued to reside in Pickaway County until their deaths.13 Samuel Young died 12 March 1896 and Catharine (Graul) Young died 5 February 1898 and both are buried in Hitler Ludwig Cemetery at Circleville. 14
