Greenhead ParkTrinity Street, Huddersfield, HD1 4DT
Greenhead Park offers a rangeof sports activities, including tenniscourts, bowling greens and a pitch andputt course, together with a park café.More recently a very popular skatepark has been developed in this area, togetherwith a miniature steam railway.
As the main park in Huddersfield, Greenhead Park is situated on land which was originally open fields, used for public meetings, concerts, galas, firework displays and even balloon landings. It wasopened in 1884, and was the second park serving the town, and hasbeen popular with residents ever since.
On opening the park offered a range of genteel pursuits for visitors, including a series of five ornamental lakes and lakeside viewing arbours, a bandstand, the ornamental bedding of the Italian Gardens, together with a raised terrace. The public paddling pool, which is the only one of its kind in Kirklees, originally formed one of the lakes. The park was originally encircled by iron railings and entrance gates, although it is believed that these were removed during World War 2.
