HRM STAFF SPOTLIGHT
Name: Amy Kirby
Hometown: Baton Rouge, Louisiana
Educa on: Master of Science, Louisiana State University
What do you do in your department, including job tle and area?
I am the Benefits Manager in HRM. I am responsible for supervising the administra on of the health and supplemental insurance programs, which includes Tui on Exemp on. The Benefits department makes every effort to educate and communicate benefits offerings to new and exis ng employees. Our goal is to ensure that employees are able to make an informed decision about what op ons work best for their families. We also assist with any enrollments and serve as a liaison between the employee and the insurance carriers to address any ques ons or concerns.
How long have you been with LSU?
Six years
What has been your most sa sfying or rewarding experience as an HR professional?
I love teaching people how their benefits can save them money. It amazes me how many people signed up for insurance years ago and never re‐evaluate them during annual enrollment to see what changes need to be made. I’ve had people come in to change their address and once we get to talking, we end up ge ng them to switch to a different health plan during annual enrollment that can poten ally save them hundreds of dollars each year (Who said we can’t give ourselves raises?!)!
What do you like most about working at LSU? I truly do love the people I work with in HRM. I think that the people you are surrounded by each day can either make or break your job. I am very lucky to have great co‐workers, a great supervisor and a fearless (literally) HR leader that always supports our team both professionally and personally.
Tell us something interes ng about yourself. I just had my first baby, Brock Michael, in March of this year. Watching him grow and develop his personality every day is the best thing that has ever happened to me. It has certainly been stressful and a challenge learning how to juggle work and being a first me mommy, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything!

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month Rates of breast cancer vary among different groups of people. Rates vary between women and men and among people of different ethnici es and ages. This means that anyone can be at risk of developing breast cancer in their life me. It is beneficial for everyone to become knowledgeable about which factors may affect your risk, early detec on signs, and preven on. You can work with your health care provider to
address any concerns you may have and develop a breast cancer screening plan that is right for you. For more informa on about breast cancer, its risks, preven on and more, visit www.komen.org.
Four Ways to Reduce Your Breast Cancer Risk About 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer at some point during her life. While you can’t change some risk
factors—gene cs and aging, for example– there are things you can do that may lower your breast cancer risk.
1. Watch Your Weight: Being overweight or obese increases breast cancer risk. This is especially true a er
menopause and for women who gain weight as adults. If you’re already at a healthy weight, stay there. If you’re
carrying extra pounds, try to shed some. There’s evidence that losing weight may lower breast cancer risk. One easy
goal to get started is to try losing 5% to 10% of your current weight over 6 months. For most women, that means
dropping just half a pound per week.
2. Exercise Regularly: Many studies have found that exercise is a breast‐healthy habit. The American Cancer Society
recommends ge ng at least 150 minutes of moderate‐intensity ac vity or 75 minutes of vigorous ac vity each week.
And don’t cram it all into a single workout – spread it out over the week. Ramping up your exercise rou ne even more
may lower your breast cancer risk even further.
3. Limit Alcohol: Women who have 2 or more alcoholic drinks a day have about 1½ mes the risk of breast cancer
compared to women who don’t drink at all. Follow the American Cancer Society’s recommenda on of no more than
one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men.
4. Avoid or Limit Menopausal Hormone Therapy: Taking hormones such as estrogen and progesterone had long been
used for night sweats, hot flashes, and other troublesome symptoms of menopause. But in 2002, researchers found
that postmenopausal women who took a combina on of estrogen and proges n were more likely to develop breast
cancer. The breast cancer risk appears to return to normal within five years a er stopping the combina on of
hormones. Talk with your doctor about all the op ons to control your menopause symptoms, and the risks and
benefits of each. If you do decide to try Hormone Replacement Therapy, it’s best to use it at the lowest dose that
works for you and for as short a me as possible. “Four Ways to Reduce Your Breast Cancer Risk” Cancer.org
