The Indiana art tradition that’s always new.

HOOSIER SALON 93rd ANNUAL EXHIBITION

In partnership with the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites

2017 Best of Show – C.W. Mundy, Emily in the Black Hat with Veil

The truth here is that the Hoosier Salon was created in 1925 by a farsighted group who dreamed of showcasing Indiana’s art in an annual exhibition. Its members hoped:

• To inspire Indiana artists, the novices as well as the experts, to develop their collective talent,

• To call attention to those artists who immortalize Indiana’s beauty, its character and its history, and

• To furnish an outlet and profitable market for those artists, a market which would encourage the beginner and reward the professional.

Excerpt from A Grand Tradition: The Art and Artists of the Hoosier Salon, 1925-1990

Sherrie McGraw studied and taught painting and drawing at the famous Art Students League of New York. Recent recognitions include an honorary doctorate from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and a rare medal from the Butler Institute of American Art, recognizing her Lifetime Achievement in American Art. Her work has shown in major museum shows for years and she is recognized as a prominent artist of our time.

An accomplished writer, McGraw has authored The Language of Drawing and has made contributions to two comprehensive books on Nicolai Fechin’s drawings and paintings. McGraw continues to teach worldwide through The Artists Guild online.

In this show works with presence rose to the top as well as those with artistic handling of the medium. Our focus was on artists with a skill level that allowed them to express their individual aesthetics, whether the image was realistic or not. In particular, we were pleased to be able to herald drawing for the foundational skill that it is to any serious artist. This made for a show of wide-ranging expressions and sensibilities.

Jim Wodark is an award winning plein air artist who was born and raised in Colorado. Throughout childhood, his parents, both artistic were incredibly encouraging of his creativity, but drew the line (so to speak) when he filled his 2nd grade teacher’s shoes with paint. He went on to earn his Bachelor’s degree in Marketing from University of Northern Colorado and attempted to fulfill his passion for art by taking an art class each semester. After several years of working real jobs, and trying to fit art around his schedule, it occurred to him that he either was or was not an artist.

Having dedicated himself to art for the last 24 years and counting, Jim continues to challenge himself creatively by approaching each painting as an opportunity to try something new. “My intention is to paint my masterpiece every time I paint a picture. This gives me never ending room to grow and experiment with my art.”

Jim is a member of several painting groups: Oil Painters of America, “Signature Member” of the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, and an “Artist Member” of the prestigious California Art Club.
