Winter 2020 3

President’s MessageThe 89th Annual Fall Convention was a great success. Every-one had a lot of fun visiting with friends and taking care of club business. My thanks to all that attended this conven-tion and those who worked to organize it. The Fall 2020 Con-vention Committee “The Wranglers” consists of Linda Jean Brown, Sarah McReynolds, Eleanor Floeck, Sherie Clarkson, Dana Serafine, Susan Carpenter, and thanks to all those that helped this convention committee.

It was my pleasure to announce that Renee Blaschke was named the Texas Garden Club’s HONORARY LIFE PRESIDENT at the fall conven-tion. She is a truly gracious and lovely lady who has served TGC for 65 years and is a Former TGC and NGC President. Re-nee will be a tremendous Texas Garden Club Honorary Life President!

Also, I was proud to present to Linda Jean Brown the SCR Member of Honor Award at this convention. Linda Jean is a very energetic and hard-working lady who deserves this award for the many years of volunteering she has given garden club and her community.

Some of the items I hoped we could make decisions on at this convention were the Ground Lease with Fort Worth, LSG Distribution, Affiliate Membership, and District Representation. We did vote to offer the City of Fort Worth these terms: TGC to retain the ownership of our Headquarters Building, to lease 10.921 acres for three consecutive 99 year leases and to be allowed to rent the building to non-garden related third parties. We will see what they say. The other items mentioned will need more discussion and are being worked on now. Please let me know, if you have any ideas. If you have not asked to have your LSG distributed to you digitality, please contact Jodi at HQ’s to make this change. It will help reduce our expenses considerably.

Thanks again for supporting TGC and 2020 Fall Convention.

Best Wishes for a Happy Holiday Season! ~ Peggy Moreland

National Garden Clubs, Inc.Our time together is very much like the changing of nature’s seasons. The spring caused us to pause for safety, then sum-mer approached with fast growing ways to meet, grow and strengthen together. As the autumn palette of color ap-proaches, we are enticed outdoors for cooler temperatures, plus enjoy the infinite shades of red and yellow. We are blessed with a beautiful world! This season is nature’s way to prepare our landscapes for the cold winter months ahead.

Reflections of this year remind us of joyful events and gather-ings, maybe not as we had planned, yet very special in their own way. During these final few months of 2020, we will give thanks for our family and friends, reflect upon our accom-plishments and prepare for the coming of a new year, know-ing that experiences prepare us for future success.

As our journey continues through the 2019-2021 administration, let’s create educational and enjoyable ways to insure our service to our communities and world. As the NGC President, it is an honor to speak with many garden club members, learning that we are resourceful and innovative. Meetings are taking place in all forms, with both online and outside meeting spaces.

Remember, just like perennial plants, garden club members keep coming back even stron-ger and dedicated to our world. I wish each of you a blessed holiday season. May gatherings with your family and friends bring joyful times and happy memories.

Gay AustinNGC President (2019-2021)

South Central RegionI hope all is well in Texas. I was delighted that you were able to have a fall in-person meeting. I had hoped to have been able to come. I am aware that the Coast of Texas has been hit hard by storms this season.

Oklahoma was hit by an early season ice storm. The trees were still covered in green leaves. This caused the trees to uproot, limbs to break, and power lines to snap. Weather is something we must adapt to. On the flip side we can plant new climate adaptable trees!

Our National Garden Clubs will be holding an Electronic Conven-tion in 2021. Please plan to support this convention. New Mexico will be having the Regional Convention 2021. Please plan on attending. I look forward to the Texas Convention for 2021. Texas Clubs always have great conventions. I hope Texas keeps entering awards for the Region and National contests.

Remember, keep planting, keep uniting with youth and plant societies to Plant America! Stay Safe!

BRIT Now Manages Ft. Worth Botanical Gardensby Gwen DeWitt

On October 1st, I journeyed to Ft. Worth to attend a ceremony where the City of Ft. Worth of-ficially turned over management of the Botanical Gardens to BRIT, Botanical Research Insti-tute of Texas. It was a beautiful day and the gardens were spectacular, the perfect setting for

the official hand over by Mayor Betsy Price of Ft. Worth to BRIT. As they re-vealed the new logo, personal masks with the same symbol were distrib-uted to the participants. It was a joy-ous occasion that was five years in the making.

BRIT is a research organization creat-ed to conserve our natural heritage. It was founded in 1987 and based in the Ft. Worth Botanical Gardens. The or-ganization does research in Texas and around the world documenting plant

life diversity. Like the intrepid botanist-explorer, Thomas Drummond that traversed Texas in the 1830s collecting some 750 plant species that were sent to museums and scientific institutions in Europe, scientists with BRIT have gone on expeditions discovering species previously unknown to science.

BRIT has major scientific projects in Texas, Oklahoma, and the Southeastern US in addition to Mexico, Belize, China, and the Philippines. This research is used for the benefit of agricul-ture, the environment, medical research and the economy using the knowledge gained in the classroom as well as the research laboratory. As a part of this stewardship, BRIT provides lectures, online education resources for teachers, intern opportunities and programs geared for youth. Texas Garden Clubs has been a part of the Ft. Worth Botanical Gardens for 60 years and we look forward to a bright future with BRIT as manager.

Jacksboro GC Community ActivitiesIn April, the Jacksboro Garden Club partnered with the local Chamber of Commerce in rec-ognizing frontline employees who continued working during the pandemic. Garden Club members delivered breakfast to the post of-fice and provided lunch to employees at Lowe’s Supermarket.

As a community service, the Jacksboro Garden Club maintains the large planter at the post office and two smaller ones at the Concerned Citizens’ Center. In addition, the organization

has created an annual project in partnership with local merchants around the courthouse square. The club provides plants and members volunteer their time in planting. Merchants keep them watered. This endeavor has become quite successful, with numerous comments on how beautiful the square looks.

Birding: A Passtime for a Lifetimeby Holly Trubowitsch, TGC Bird Chairman

Unwittingly, I grew up as a birder. My mom always had the binoculars and bird book at the ready next to the kitchen window. We identified every bird that came our way. I thought that was standard procedure until I was at a friend’s house, saw an interesting bird outside their kitchen window, and received a blank stare when I asked for their bin-oculars and bird book. Their loss! Birding is such a wonderful hobby and has certainly flourished during our current pandemic.

This year El Paso had an incredible number of species migrate through. For the first time I had Dark-eyed (pink-sided) Juncos, Green-tailed Towhees, Black-headed Grosbeaks, and Wilson’s Warblers (sweet little yellow birds with black caps) hopping around my garden. Our migration was aided by the “Lights Out Texas” campaign promoted by for-mer First Lady, Laura Bush. Nearly one out of every four birds migrating in the United States pass through Texas and because most of their flight takes place at night, light pollution is a serious concern for the bird population. So, former First Lady, Laura Bush, asked Texans to lower or dim their unnecessary lights so that birds can migrate safely through our state. You can actually see bird migration forecast maps in real time on the BirdCast website https://birdcast.info/

Of course, populating your garden with bird-friendly native plants, such as sunflowers, honeysuckle, oak trees, and elderberry trees, helps draw a crowd. A well-stocked bird feeder and bird bath add to the attraction. Make sure you have your binoculars and bird book at the ready!

District II Garden Culture Club of Denton

planted two Desert Willow trees at

Fairoaks Retirement Center in memory

of our club member, Barbara Burgin,

who passed away in January. This was

her favorite tree and Barbara who was

also a master gardener was the lead in

renovating the gardens at Fairoaks for

many years. Engraved signs have been

added.District IV clubs celebrate Arbor Day at the By-Way Blue Star

Marker Ceremony, where a Muskogee Crepe Myrtle was planted at Fisher House in Houston.

District II Lake Worth Garden Club placed

a tree in a public place where the

message of tree conservation could

be seen. After much discussion, they

decided on a Red Oak (Quercus texana).

The tree was planted in the west

side lawn area of the dog park. One

LWGC member and the City had

provided inscribed granite blocks to

commemorate our organization’s

donations and the date planted.

District III Gateway Garden Club held their Arbor Day celebration at Opportunities, Inc. in Texarkana in memory of Mary Patterson, a long-time club member. Mark and Julie Patterson and Margaret

Davis visit the tree.

District III Dogwood Garden Club of Palestine celebrated Arbor Day with many helping hands.

District IV club members Monyene Carnes and Patti Schindler, and District Director Nancy Giffhorn, receive their Arbor Day

plaque from TGC Arbor Day Chairman, Linda Jean Brown, at the 89th TGC Fall Convention.
