greater day by day. See the growth in them of

“My beloved sons, look through my eyes and you will see how the Church is in the process of

renewing herself interiorly under the powerful action of the spirit of God.

This renewal is not apparent from outside her because of the cold indifference with which she

is enveloped and the great darkness which possesses her. She is at present passing through the

most painful hours of her purification. Aided and sustained by her Mother, the Church is in the

process of ascending the hard road to Calvary where she will again be crucified and immolated for

the good of so many of her sons.

But enter with me into the heart of the Church. Here the triumph of my heart has already been

achieved. It has been achieved in the person and the life of the Holy Father who is being led by me

to the summit of holiness through the daily immolation which will bring him to a veritable

Mary Was there

to call on her house the following Friday on condition

that she said the holy Rosary during the next three days.

I went to her house on Friday. Seeing me ap-

proaching her house she came out with a pleasant

smile. When I asked her the reason for her happiness

she told me that her husband was a changed person

ever since she started saying the Rosary .He stopped

taking drinks and ceased picking up quarrels. She could

also sleep well in the past three days as if under seda-

tion which she has not been having in the past six

months. O Halleluiah! Hearing this wonderful testimony

I thanked God for blessing her family. I prayed there

and went back. In another six months her husband, who

was an atheist, went for a retreat and became a prayer

group leader. What happened in that house? When that

women invited Mother Mary to her house through the

Holy Rosary, the devil left the house through the back

door. My dear brothers and sisters, if there is Mary in

your life the devil cannot trouble you ,if she is there in

Once a woman approached me with a prayer request for her husband who was a drunkard.

He was also a non- believer ,who did not either permit saying evening prayers or keeping

pictures of Jesus and Mary for veneration in the house. He used to beat her up and smashed

the valuables in the house. While narrating these the woman has been sobbing. She re-

quested me to pay a visit to her house for prayer. It was a Tuesday. In reply I promised

your heart, you cannot commit sin and if she is there in your house, there will be peace. Halleluiah.

During the marriage feast in the house at Cana in Galilee when the wine gave out, Mother Mary

and Jesus were present there. They might be close relatives of that family. Mary said to Jesus "They have

no wine" (Jn. 2:3). When Mary came to know that there was no wine, she took upon herself the burden

of the householder. She knew that only Jesus, the son of God ,could help them out. The Holy Spirit in

Mary inspired her to approach Jesus and ask for his intervention. Though Jesus replied that "My hour

has not yet come" (Jn 2:4), Mother Mary was not disheart-

ened ; instead she asked the servants to "Do whatever he

tells you" (Jn 2:5) Here is an important question. Why did

Mary ask the servants to do whatever Jesus told them? She

didn't ask the family members to do something. That means

that the Holy Spirit had already revealed to Mary what Jesus

was going to do. Jesus asked the servants " to fill the jars

with water" (Jn 2:7) It was revealed to Mary that Jesus will

ask the servants to fill the Jars with water and the water will

become wine. It was because of this fore knowledge that Mary

asked the servants to do whatever Jesus told them. The Holy

Spirit in Jesus instructed him to do the miracle on the media-

tion of Mother Mary.

Mary is not an ordinary woman. She is the wisdom of

God that became flesh. She is led by the Holy Spirit. We have

to invite Mary into our heart, our life, our family, our parish

and into all our problems. She is a perpetual help and her

presence brings blessings from the heaven.

When Mary visited her aunt Elizabeth, the wife of

Zachariah, she greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard the

greeting of Mary she was filled with the Holy Spirit.( Luke 1:

39-42). The very presence of Mary brings power of the Holy

Spirit.

In her visit Mary fulfilled a prophecy by angel Gabriel: "even before his birth he will be

filled with the Holy Spirit" (Lk 1:15). When angel Gabriel told Zachariah about the birth of John

the Baptist, he prophesied that the child would be filled with the power of the Holy Spirit when he

was in his mother's womb and he would receive the anointing of prophet Elijah. God used

Mother Mary to anoint John the Baptist with the power of prophet Elijah. When John the Baptist

baptized Jesus in the river Jordan the heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon

him. (Mt 3:16)

Again,Mary was at the foot of the cross at Calvary to strengthen her son in his sufferings.

She helped him fulfill the plans of God. Mary believed the promise of Jesus "I am sending upon

you what my Father promised; so stay here in the city until you have been clothed with power

from on high." (Lk 24:49) So she gathered the apostles together in the upper room and encour-

aged them to pray. The disciples who were traumatised at the death of Jesus and unable tobelieve the testimony of the woman who saw the resurrected Christ , however, obeyed Mary and

prayed together in one mind for ten days. Among them only Mary

was filled with the Holy Spirit. On the day of the Pentecost the

Holy Spirit descended upon them as of fire. (Acts 2:1-4). It was

Mary's faithfulness and trust in God that helped the disciples re-

ceive the power of the Holy Spirit. Thus God used Mary to give

Jesus and the Holy Spirit to all. Yes ,Mary was everywhere in

God's plan. She humbled herself and God exalted her highly. Af-

ter the name of Jesus the name of Mary is the name above all

names.

How can we invite Mary into our life ? Through the Holy

Rosary. When we say the Holy Rosary we praise Mary using the

words which the angel Gabriel and the Holy spirit used to praise

Mary. It brings the presence of Mary. One Rosary consists of 153

beads. When we say 153 beads of the Rosary we make a crown

and put it on Mary's head, she being the Holy Queen. So make at

least one crown and glorify Mary daily. By doing so you and your

family will be blessed. May God bless you all.

 Hallelujah

A meaningful anda devotional way of

praying the Holy Rosary(Rev. Fr. Dr. Matteo Marian)

J.M.J Book Co., Necedah ,

Wis. 54646, U.S.A,

1979,page. IV).

St. Bernard on praying the

 Rosary: St. Bernard, a

Doctor of the Church, gives

us the correct method of pray-

ing the Rosary. He says:"

while your lips pronounce the

words let your mind 'picture'

Almost all the devotees of Holy Mary our Mother pray the Rosary. But is it prayed

meaningfully and fruitfully? And does it bring us those blessings which are promised to

us through the great saints of the Church and above all our Mother herself? If not, who

are to be blamed? We may blame none but ourselves because we do not pray the Rosary

in the manner we ought to pray, that is with true understanding and devotion.

Our Holy Mother once said: "when the Rosary is said properly, my power is be-

hind it. Say it with my divine Son and me in mind, and ask me to bring about the true

value of this devotion; then each bead said well can conquer, a host of men" ( cited in the

book " Divine Mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary" Compiled, edited and published by

the mystery , not as an event which took place centuries ago,

but as events taking place"now" in your presence. In each

mental picture thus formed, see also yourself in the scene.Do

not change the mental picture, but let it remain unchanged. If

the picture is recalled without change, it will become more

life - like".

St. Bernard advises us to imagine mental pictures of

the sacred mysteries of the Rosary, while we pray. It is easy

to make mental pictures of the five joyful mysteries of the

Rosary, because the centre of these mysteries is Mother Mary

herself with child Jesus. When we meditate on the other

mysteries, where Mother Mary is not directly involved, then

we may make mental pictures with Mother Mary and ourself

in the scene.

For example, when we meditate on the transfiguration

of our Lord on the Mount Tabore, imagine Mother Mary

witnessing the sacred events. We know that Mother Mary was

not there on the Mount Tabore, but it is not forbidden to

think that Holy Mary was always with Jesus.Accordingly,

we may imagine Mother Mary in the Garden of Gethsemane

where our Lord shed his holy blood and as a witness to the

great event of our salvation- the Resurrection of our Lord.

With concentration and devotion

After making the mental picture and fixing our mind at

it, recite the prayer "Hail Mary" ten times. It shall not be by

rote, instead say it as if you are saying it directly to Holy

Mary who is present in front of you. Recite the prayer con-

scious of the meaning of each phrase with rapt attention and

devotion.

To make the mental pictures of the sacred mysteries,

we may have the pictures of the mysteries athand; look at them until they are captured in

our minds; then reproduce them in our imagi-

nation while saying the Rosary. The more we

try in this way, the greater will be our atten-

tion and devotion when we pray the Rosary.

Vocal prayer

St. Teresa of Avila, a great mystic and Doc-tor of the Church teaches that there are many

grades of prayer by which one attains union

with God.Vocal prayer is the first and the low-

est grade of prayer. Any written form of

Page 10: Holy Queen Magazine - Nov 2008

prayer recited in silence or loudly,

either in private or in a commu-

nity is a vocal prayer. In this

sense, the prayer of the Rosary

is a vocal prayer.

Transforming

vocal prayer into

mental prayer

According to St. Teresa of

Avila mental prayer or meditation

belongs to the second grade of

prayer. A vocal prayer becomes a men-

tal prayer if three conditions are satisfied. In

the book 'Interior Castle' she says: "vocal prayer,

if it is a prayer at all, must be accompanied by

meditation. If a person does not think whom he

is addressing, and what he is asking for, and who

it is that is asking and of whom he is asking it, I

do not consider that he is praying at all even

though he be constantly moving his lips" (In-

terior Castle, translated and edited by E.Allison

Peers, Sheed and Ward, London, chapter one,

1975) Again St. Teresa, in her an-

other book "Way of Perfection" says:

" you must know, daughters, that

whether or not you are practicing

mental prayer has nothing to do with

keeping the lips closed. If, while I am

speaking with God, I have a clear re-

alization and full consciousness that I

am doing so, and if this is more real to

me than the words I am uttering, then

I am combining mental prayer and

vocal prayer " (Way of Perfection,

Trans. Edi. E. Allison Peers, chap.

22).

Having mental pic-

tures in meditation

and contemplation

Just as St. Bernard asks us to use

mental pictures as an aid to pray the

Rosary, St. Teresa of Avila also asks us to

make use of holy pictures in meditation and

even in the early stages of contemplation. In her

book "Life" she says: "My method of prayer was this.

As I could not reason with my mind, I would try to

make pictures of Christ inwardly; and I used to think

that I felt better when I dwelt on those parts of His

life when he was most often alone. It seemed to

me that he being alone and afflicted, like a person

in need, made it possible for me to approach him"

(Life, Trans. Ed; E. Allison Peers, Sheed and Ward,

London, 1975, chap.9). To make pictures

of Christ inwardly, she began to look at

pictures or paintings of Christ working

miracles or Jesus praying in the garden

of Gethsemane etc "It was for this rea-

son", she writes, " that I was so fond of

pictures " ( Ibid; chap.9, no.6).

vocal prayer,

if it is a prayer

at all, must be

accompanied

by meditation

St. Teresa was convinced that looking at pictures

of Jesus Christ would kindle love and devotion to

Him. Therefore she exhorts the beginners in prayer

life in the following way: "Unhappy are those who

through their own faults lose this blessing! It really

looks as if they do not love the Lord, for if they

loved Him they would delight in looking at pictures

of Him, just as they take pleasure in seeing pictures

of anyone else whom they love" ( Ibid).

The joy of praying the Rosary

St Bernard and St. Teresa of Avila tell us the

importance of mental pictures while praying the

Rosary or any other vocal prayer. They insist that

any kind of vocal prayer must be a meditation or

mental prayer. If we try to pray the Rosary as these

saints teach us, gradually the prayer of the Rosary

will become meaningful and devotional.

My experience with many Marian devotees

suggests that praying the Rosary in the above pre-

scribed way is meaningful, devotional, and joyful

and it inspires us to go on praying the Rosary as

many as three or four times at a time. We really

feel the company of our Holy Mother, to whom

we address constantly "Hail Mary".

As St. Bernard teaches us, God wants to give

us all the graces through the hands of our Mother

Mary. Therefore, let us be zealous enough to pray

the Rosary as many times as possible and thereby

receive all the heavenly blessings in abundance

for all of us and for all those who left us for the

eternal life.

My name is Janis and I reside in Vasai west.

In my early school days I was good at studies;

but from IX standard onwards I lost interest in

studies and failed in exams. I lost self-confi-

dence and became lazy and irritating. Some

how, I secured a pass and got into standard X.

I lost interest in studies and because of this I

was depressed and the whole family suffered

because of me. My mother took me to a

Miracles in Rosary prayer at Malad, but I was

indifferent. But because of the insistence of my

mother I stood there and when the prayer pro-

gressed I unwittingly started cooperating with

the prayer. I experienced a prompting which

made me realize my own failures . God re-

vealed to me the several suicide attempts made

by me in the past. I repented on my sins and

sought the mercy of God. A dark power has

been ruling me because of some black magic

done in my family and I prayed for the mercy of

God. Br. Tom Zacharia prayed for me and the

mighty power of the living God broke my bond-

age and set me free. I was filled with the Holy

Spirit and became happy again. Depression and

negative thoughts left me and I regained confi-

dence. I remembered that in my childhood, Jesus

used to talk to me. When I stopped praying,

evil powers started ruling my life. Now I real-

ize the mistake and decided to pray intensely. I

felt happy after the prayer and I started studying

well and now I get good marks in exams. I

thank Jesus for this wonderful deliverance and

healing .Praise the Lord.

To the heaven's mysteries through the Immaculate heart of virgin Mary :

Consecrate India to my Immaculate heart and say the Rosary fervently for the liberation of the country

and for the salvation of souls. Priests and the religious who have taken their vows before God to lead a

life of holiness and stand witness to my son before nations are a great agony to my motherly heart. My

grieving heart sobs in agony for the covetous and avaricious who are after the fleeting pleasures of sin

and carnal desires, leading a sinful and indulgent life and defiling the sanctified body of my Son withtheir black-stained hands. My Immaculate heart is pierced again and again when the lips which are to

impart the word of God, the steps to divinity and God's power proclaim with impunity heresies and self-

interest. My children, I implore you: console my beloved Son. Share in his pains. Travel with him from

Bethlehem to Golgotha.

JESUS HEALED ME OF ALL

SICKNESSES AND BONDAGES

RESULTED FROM WITCHCRAFT  Annie John Palamattom, Vile Parle.

I have been suffering from bondages of evil forces for the last 32

years due to which I had lot of troubles in my family. To get rid of

this bondage, I visited many places and participated in many retreats.

The agony I underwent was severe and indescribable. Everyone in

my area know my condition. It was when I attended a retreat

conducted by Fr. Rufus Pereira that I came to know that my problems

were due to some witchcraft done in my family but never confessed

by anyone of my family members. He advised me to pray

continuously and I started praying fervently. I got some relief for a

while but my problems aggravated inspite of my prayers. There was

chaos in my house and everyone in the family was disturbed.

However,I continued my prayers in the midst of my troubles. At

this time, I came to know about the Born Again in Spirit retreat of

the Spirit in Jesus team. When the date of the retreat was approaching,

I fell sick and I thought I couldn’t attend the retreat. Somehow or

other I attended the retreat. During the retreat, I came to know

more about my bondages and the ways to break them. The Holy

Spirit touched me and a lot of healing started happening to me. The

spoken word pierced me and I felt the power in tongues. It broke my

heart and much changes took place in me. I experienced the power

of the Rosary which could destroy all the dark powers which possessed

me and my generations.

Br.Tom Zacharia prayed for my deliverance. In an instant the

power of the Holy Spirit flowed into me and made me feel good , free

and happy. All my sicknesses had gone. Many instances of violation

of the first commandment, occult practices and witchcraft done in

my generations were revealed to me and the Holy Spirit helped me to

a good confession. With Jesus I am powerful and free and thereforeI have decided to live for the Lord in gratitude of the mighty things

done for me .I offer my thanks and praise to the Living God and

Savior, Jesus Christ. I also thank God for revealing many mysteries

through the Spirit in Jesus and making me to strive for holiness. May

God bless Br. Tom Zacharia and his team and help them spread the

kingdom of God throughout the world.

model of a child of God in Mother Mary. To

understand the impact of the Word of God in any

individual, Holy Virgin Mary is the best model we

have before us. When we look into the life of Holy

Mary, the Mother of Jesus, we see that the Word

which became flesh in her influenced her life and

the lives of many around her. In her we see the

impact of the Word of God when it became flesh

-its power and glory and how the Word works

when it becomes flesh in our life.

It is said about the Word of God: "Indeed, the

Word of God is living and active, sharper than any

two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul

from spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to judge

the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And be-

fore him no creature is hidden, but all are naked

and laid bare to the eyes of the one to whom we

Modern production uses moulds so that the products are uniform, unique, perfect, good in

appearance and quality, thanks to technological progress and development. When we think

of spiritual life, we also consider models to look up to and that is why we trace the life of

saints and other persons of spiritual repute. Our Father in Heaven has given us a great

must render an account." Hew.4:12-13. When we look

into the life of our Holy Mother, we see how the Word

of God became alive and penetrated into her self, bones

and flesh and how it revealed the thoughts of the heart

and desires of her life. The Archangel Gabriel appeared

to Holy Mary and declared: "Do not be afraid, Mary,

for you have found favor with God. And now, you

will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you

will name him Jesus. He will be great, and will be

called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God

will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He

will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his

kingdom there will be no end." Lk.1:30-33. When

she heard these words, she received them in her heart

and started contemplating on them. " He said to me:

Mortal, all my words that I shall speak to you receive

in your heart and hear with your ears;"

Ezek 3:10 The received word started

working in her because the Word

is the God's power to rouse the

heart and that was how the

thoughts came up in her heart.

Thoughts came up in her

heart not to doubt nor reject

the Word she received but

to understand it. From the

fullness of heart the mouth

speaks and since the Word

was in the heart it naturally

came out. Thoughts are rooted

in the heart just as a tree in the field

is standing because its root is firm in the ground.

Though the root is not visible to us we know this

fact very clearly. "The good person out of the good

treasure of the heart produces good, and the evil

person out of the evil treasure produces evil; for it is

out of the abundance of the heart that the mouth

speaks." Lk.6:45

The promise of salvation repeatedly given to the

Israeli people by God from time to time through his

prophets ruled the heart of Mary from childhood

onwards and her devotion to the Lord filled her heart.

At the appointed hour when the angel of the Lord

said the Word, the love of God was inflamed in

Mary which prompted her to accept the Word .

Whatever word she had heard earlier and all the

God's promises to the Israeli people were in her heart

she believed them all and dedicated her

life for the glory of the Lord. The

moment she heard the Angel

pronounce the Word, the

promise of the living God

in her heart prompted the

thoughts to come out of

her . "Discussion is the

beginning of every work

and counsel precedes ev-

ery undertaking. The

mind is the root of all con-

duct;" Sir.37:16-17. This

happened"Because God is

witness of their inmost feelings,

and a true observer of their

hearts, and a hearer of their

tongues." Wis.1:6.

Once she realised that the

promise of God was going to

be fulfilled through her, she

did not hesitate to give her con-

sent to it. Without hesitation

she replied : "Here am I, the

servant of the Lord, let it be

with me according to your

Word." Lk.1:38. Since she

stood for God, her consent to God's plan came

naturally when it was revealed. Instantaneously the

Word became flesh in her womb. God wanted

her cooperation for the Word become flesh in her

and the moment her consent came through, God

made the Word flesh. "So shall my Word be that

goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to meempty, but it shall accomplish that which I pur-

pose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it."

Isa55:11 .

When Mary found that her relative Elizabeth

was pregnant in her old age, she rushed to her to

see the glory of God. With a heart full of joy and

love of God she greeted Elizabeth and miracle af-

ter miracle happened. "When Elizabeth heard

Mary's greeting, the child leaped in her womb.

And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and

exclaimed with a loud cry, 'Blessed are you among

women and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And

why has this happened to me, that

the mother of my Lord comes to

me? For as soon as I heard the

sound of your greeting, the child

in my womb leaped for joy. And

blessed is she who believed that

there would be a fulfillment of what

was spoken to her by the Lord."

Lk 1:41-45. When Elizabeth pro-

claimed all those things that hap-

pened to Mary, she could not keep

her mouth shut. Her song of praise

overflowed from her mouth. The

promise of God and its fulfillment were before her and

she rejoiced in the Lord for His mighty deeds. Mary

love-filled for the Lord praised Him; seeing the maj-

esty of the living God and His mercy she became

humble and meek. She realized her nothingness and

illuminated by Him, her heart poured out the Magnificat.

All that happened came to her mind. When the Arch-

angel said the Word , no one had overheard it. She kept

everything to herself and met Elizabeth, where she saw

the mighty things which the Holy Spirit was doing. She

realised that the mystery was revealed to Elizabeth and

believed the wonderful work of the Holy Spirit.

Then she went into a perfect silence in life. She never

made it known to anyone those things that happened in

her life, not even to her glorious spouse. Though she

understood the grief of her spouse on seeing her preg-

nant, she did not break her silence. She considered it to

be the prerogative of God in revealing things in her life.

Even though she had the knowledge of God's revela-

tions she did not share them with others. She had

the divine wisdom not to reveal it herself, so that

the devil be prevented from spoiling the divine

plan. As she persisted in silence, God revealed it

at the proper time and in a proper way. By doing

so she also showed us the way to keep the devil

away from our life once the Word became flesh in

our life. This again is a testimony of her perfect

obedience and love for God and His Word. She

protected the Word she received with utmost care

and love. The silence of Mother Mary was unique.

She observed the works of the Lord, understood

them and then cooperated with Him.: "For we are

what He has made us, created in Christ Jesus for

good works, which God prepared beforehand to

be our way of life." Eph 2:10. When she with-

drew to herself, she could see the work of the

Lord and that made her rejoice and praise Him

from her heart. Thus the out pouring of praise came

out of her heart for she saw the mighty deeds of the living God and the marvelous way He did them.

She had nothing of her

own to rejoice but had

abundance of His deeds to

rejoice on which is the pin-

nacle of glory that one can

ever achieve. "Happy are

we, O Israel, for we know

what is pleasing to God."

Bar 4:4

The Word became flesh

aroused the servant- spirit

in her and she went to Elizabeth not to make a courtesy

call on her but to serve her. She lived with her for three

months and served her. Charity blossomed in her when

need arose and so were all the fruits of the Holy Spirit.

However, the most important function of the Spirit is to

glorify God in every walk of our life. Mary did it in

abundance and is the prototype in this respect. Thus she

is the ideal child of God for us and generations to emu-

late. She stood for the Lord; once found acceptable to

God, He sent His Word to her and she, on her part,

received, accepted , observed , understood and obeyed

it. She found that when the Word is received God will

do everything of His own and her only duty was to co-

operate with the Holy Spirit in his work and accept and

glorify Him for everything He does for us. This way

we have to protect the Word and thus have life, i.e.,

Jesus. Thus we give all glory and praise to Him.

To sum up, Mary is the archetype designed by God

Himself for everyone who wants to become a child of

God to emulate. The Almighty God understands theneeds of His children and accordingly gave us this great

model to follow. Only the wise re-

alizes the truth and the received truth

will guide us in our endeavour to

become a child of God. When we

observe her we see how marvelous

a model she is and we love to live

with her. Thus it becomes easy for

everyone who wishes to be moul-

ded in the likeness of God, if he has

access to this Holy Mother. Thanks

and praise the Lord.

SAINT ALPHONSA TOM ZACHARIAH

One day I was reading a book

on Sr. Alphonsa. It said that she

was obedient and at peace with

those who hurt her. Whenever the

Mother Superior of the convent

scolded her she never argued with

or justified herself. Instead she felt

sorry for giving troubles to others.

Whenever the Mother Superior

scolded the servants for their irre-

sponsibility Sr.Alphonsa would go

out for their help. Instead of blam-

ing the servants she put the blame

on herself and got blamed.

While reading these some thing

God Almighty has glorified Sr. Alphonsa by exalting her

to Sainthood. Years ago I read a book on Sr. Alphonsa that

touched and changed my life. I had a bad habit of arguing

with others. After becoming a child of God through a charis-

matic retreat in the year of 1988. I was struggling to lead a

holy life. But the old self in me was active and I couldn't con-

trol myself.

Whenever my father scolded me of my failures in my du-

ties I couldn't submit myself. I justified myself by my argu-

ments which usually ended up in a verbal fight. And I used to

lose my peace of mind over that. In those days I used to pray

for six to eight hours and have experienced the presence of

the Holy Spirit. But after the arguments I felt depressed and

worried. I was not aware of the fact that Holy Spirit had left

me because of the fight.

struck my heart, tears started to roll

down my eyes. I realised how un-

worthy I was. After receiving the

Holy Spirit I was grieving Him

by my arguments. I said :

"Lord I am not worthy to call

upon your Holy name. I don't

want to fight with any one. I

want to change my life. From

today onwards I want to be a

new creation". From that day

onwards I stopped arguing

with others and justifying my-

self. The tranformations in my

life changed the attitude of my

father towards me in a month.

I realised that my deposit in the

heaven has increased day by

day. It was the witnessing of

Sr. Alphonsa that changed my

life.

God Almighty has given

me the grace to experience the

presence of Sr.Alphonsa in my

life. During my prayers I used to seen a nun. I

thought God was asking me to pray for a nun. But

later the Holy Spirit revealed to me that it was

Sr.Alphonsa who was given for my help whose

prayers helped me overcome the great sufferings I

had undergone in the year 1988-89.

In one of my visits to the tomb of Sr.

Alphonsa, I saw the presence of God de-

scending on that place in the form of a

thick white cloud. I experience the

same wherever I visit the shrine of

our Mother in Velankanny. Mother

Mary is the Queen of Heaven. But

Sr. Alphonsa was only an ordinary

nun who glorified God through her

witnessing. Now God Almighty

has glorified her by giving her

Sainthood.

The Clarist convent in

Bharananganam in Kerala where

the saint gave the witnessing to

Jesus is a holy place. Once I was

praying in Saint Alphonsa's room.

Then I felt showers of heavy light

falling upon me. I couldn't open

my eyes, I couldn't move, I stood

still for some time. I saw the heav-

enly light, I felt the mighty pres-

ence of God. I realised that I was

standing in a holy place. I thank God for giving me

the grace to be in that holy place and experience the

love of God through Saint Alphonsa. I pray that

Almighty God bless the thousands who visit Saint

Alphonsa's tomb and house.

God Almighty has

glorified

Sr. Alphonsa

by exalting her to

Sainthood.

Joshi PandariOur life is a journey - a journey along

with Jesus. There is a beginning and a

reaching point for every journey. As

we begin our spiritual life in answer to

the call by Jesus, heaven is our goal in

this spiritual journey. Our only aim

throughout our spiritual life should be

heaven. Apostle St. Paul says " So I run straight to-

wards the goal in order to win the prize, which is God's

call through Christ Jesus to the life above" Phil 1:21

"For what is life? To me, it is Christ, and death is prof-

itable for me" Phil 3:14. Death marks the end of life on

earth, but the Apostle emphasises the spiritual gain after

death as it is the entry point to heaven for a person who

 journeyed his life with Jesus.

Jesus is the only savior and way to heaven. All man-kind could reach heaven only through this way. There

is no other way. Jesus says "I am the way, the truth,

and the life; no one goes to the father except by me" Jn

Page 21: Holy Queen Magazine - Nov 2008

14:6. In our spiritual jour-

ney, Jesus is always there

holding our hands with

His never ending love to

lead us to right direction.

It is we who deserts Jesus,

mislead by the world and

go our own way. When

Jesus asked the Apostles

to 'follow me', they abandoned all

what they had and followed Him

without looking back. As the

Apostles did, we have to leave our

sinful life behind and follow Jesus.

If the Apostles had refused the in-

vitation of Jesus thinking of their

loss of boat, net, wealth, family

etc., wouldn't they have lost the

real wealth in heaven? Jesus says us that "Anyone who

wants to come with me must forget yourself, take up

their cross every day and follow me" Lk 9:23

To follow Jesus means, to go with Him. He says

"My sheep hear my voice and I know them; they follow

me and I give them eternal life. They shall never perish

and no one will ever steal them from me" Jn 10:27-28.

We may have faith in Jesus, but we often fail to form a

deep relationship with Him. This is because we are still

at the same point where Jesus had invited us to follow

Him and unable to make a step ahead. "You must give

up your former way of living; the old self, whose de-

ceitful desires bring self-destruction. Your hearts and

minds must be made completely new, and you must put

on the new self, which is created in God's likeness and

reveals itself in the

true life that is upright

and holy" Eph 4:22-

24. "Anyone who is

  joined to Christ is a

new being; the old is

gone, the new has

come" 2 Cor 5:17

"Put on, rather, the

Lord Jesus Christ and do not

be led by the will of the flesh

nor follow its desires" Rom

13:14. If we turn back to this

sinful world, we will miss the

presence of Jesus and our

path ahead will be filled with

darkness. The word of God

will be the light on this foggy

road. A life built on the Word of God is vital to

shed light on the road we walk. Jesus says "I am

the light of the world, whoever follows me will

have the light of life and will never walk in dark-

ness" Jn 8:12. To walk with God is foolishness to

the world. However, we become dearer to the

Father in heaven when we walk with His Son, our

only trustworthy friend, Jesus Christ, who loves

us as much as His own life. Being the citizens of

the Kingdom of Heaven while living in this world,we must lead a detached life, foolish to the world,

but pleasing to the Heaven.

Though we are in this world, we are not of this

world. 1 Peter 2:9 says "You are the chosen race,

the King's priests, the holy nation, God's own

people, chosen to proclaim the wonderful acts of

God, who called you out of darkness into his own

marvelous light". Being the

citizens of Heaven, we are

foreigners in this world. We

do not belong to this world,

instead we live for a short

time as visitors and tourists.

During this short time, we

buy and possess many things,

but do not own them forever.

Our family, job, wealth,

property and everything that

we possess as our own are

going to be detached from us

on the day we say goodbye

to this world. However,

whatever we possess in our

spiritual life and surrender the

same into the hands of God

will be a treasure for us for-

ever in Heaven. Jesus says

"Do not work for food that

goes bad; instead, work for

the food that lasts for eternal

life" Jn 6:27.

The materialistic possessions that we accumu-

late give us only worldly pleasures. Is our bodysatisfied with these pleasures? "The world and

everything in it that people desire is passing away;

but those who do the will of God live forever" 1

Jn 2:17. Our prayerful and holy life with God has

become a great treasure in Heaven. King

Alexander conquered many kingdoms and the world

came under his control. On his way back home after his

last military expedition he fell seri-

ously ill and death stared at him. He

begged his doctors to add a few

more moments to his life so that he

could reach home before death to

see his mother; they were helpless.

Alexander realized the futility of

conquests, great army, sharp sword

and wealth in saving him from the

call of death. He had to accept the

fact that he was going to die. He

called his General and requested

him not to fail in carrying out his

last three wishes. The first was that

his coffin should be carried by his

doctors so that people must know

that no doctor can cure a person and

save him from death. Second wish

was that the gold, silver, and pre-

cious stones in his treasury be strewn

on the way to the grave so that

people will know that not even a

fraction of these will go with him

and it is sheer waste of time to chase wealth. The third

wish was that his hands should be kept dangling out of

the coffin. By doing this, he wished his people to knowthat whatever he earned in this life was of no use and

was going empty handed out of this world. Jesus says

"Do not store up riches for yourselves here on earth,

where moths and rust destroy, and robbers break in and

steal. Instead, store up riches for yourselves in heaven,

"Do not storeup riches for

yourselves here on

earth, where moths

and rust destroy,

and robbers break

in and steal.

Instead, store

up riches for

yourselves in

heaven, where

moths and rust

cannot destroy,

and robbers cannotbreak in and

steal....

where moths and rust cannot destroy, and robbers can-

not break in and steal. For your heart will always be

where your riches are" Mt 6:19-21.

Let our life be holy to store up treasures in Heaven.

"What does it profit you to gain the whole world while

you destroy or damage yourself" Lk 9:25. Not as a house

built on the sand, but as a house built on a rock, we must

build our life on the foundation of Jesus, the rock. Not

beautiful in our eyes, but our life should be beautiful in

the eyes of our God.

Jesus must be the ruler of ev-

erything in our life - ruler of our

self, family, job, abilities, situations

and everything. If so, the world

can see Jesus in us. Not to be self-

ish, but it is our duty to save the

souls of our brothers and sisters

also. If their souls are lost in igno-

rance of the one and only savior

Jesus Christ, aren't we responsible

for this loss? If we meet a person

with suicidal tendency, won't we

try to save him? Don't we know

that he is our own brother or sister

in Jesus Christ? In order to accom-

plish the wish of our Heavenly

Father that none to be lost, let our

sinless life with Jesus be a model

for our brothers and sisters to find

the right path to Heaven and

thereby their salvation.

We shall not wish anything less than becoming a

Saint. Though we live holy in all aspects, but if

addicted to a small sin, how can we attain our goal?

"Offer yourself as living sacrifice to God, dedi-

cated to his service and pleasing to him. This is

the true worship that you should offer" Rom 12:1.If my life stops this moment when my life is ad-

dicted to a particular sin, my journey shall be of

no use without reaching the goal? "Take truth as

your belt, justice as your breastplate, and zeal as

your shoes to propagate the

Gospel of peace" Eph 6:14-

15. There are two ways for

us to choose, either in Jesus to

life or in sin to death. Let us

abandon our sinful life com-

pletely and start our journey

along with Jesus that leads to

life. Let us proclaim in our

journey that "It is no longer I

who live, but it is Christ who

lives in me. This life that I live

now, I live by faith in the Son

of God, who loved me and

gave his life for me" Gal 2:20.

Let our Holy Queen be a

model for us to live in holiness

in our journey to eternal life.

Let us ask for Her help and

intersession so that we shall be

able to live a sinless life.

Amen.

Jesus must bethe ruler of every-

thing in our life -

ruler of ourself,

family, job, abilities,

situations and ev-

erything. If so, the

world can see

Jesus in us. Not to

be selfish, but it is

our duty too to

save the souls of

our brothers and

sisters also

hold that one can directly confess his sins to God and

therefore a mediator is unnecessary.

Jesus said to his disciples "If you forgive the sins

of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of

any, they are retained" ( Jn. 20:23) .Jesus said this after

his death and resurrection. Jesus destroyed the power

of sin when he died on the cross Only after destroying

the power of sin on the cross he gave the authority to

his disciples to forgive the sins of others. The absolu-

tion is done in the name of Jesus by the Holy Spirit.

Sin is a fruit of the devil. It is not the weakness of a

person. The devil influences the weakness and

rules the person. Truly when a priest forgives

the sins of the confessant, he casts out the evil

powers that possess the sinner.

When Jesus chose his disciples

and send them on his mission he did not

give them the authority to forgive sins

of others. Instead he said: preach the

word ,cast out demons, heal the

sick, raise the dead and cleanse the

lepers. (Mt 10:7, Luke 9:1). But

Then he said:` if you for-

Millions of

people were un-

der the slavery of

sin. Through sin

death exercised

dominion even

over those whose

sins were not like

the sins of Adam

(Rom. 5:14) Sin

Why didn't Jesus give the

power to forgive sins before his

death? He gave them authority

over demons and evil spirits and

to preach , heal and even to raise

the dead. But he never autho-

rized them to forgive the sins of

others.

When Jesus died on the

cross he bore our sins on his

body (1 pet 2: 24). He was punished for our sins. "But

he was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our

iniquities; upon him was the punishment that made us

whole, and by his bruises we are healed" ( Isa 53:5).

When John the Baptist saw Jesus he declared: "Here is

the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world"( Jn 1:29)

The Almighty God put our sins on the body of Jesus

and he was punished for our sins. He was nailed on the

cross and he died. Through his death Jesus destroyed

the power of death ,that is the devil (Heb 2:15)

is the root cause of influ-

ence of the devil. Jesus

gave the Apostles power to

cast out the devil but he

never asked them to for-

give the sins because the

power of sin should have

to be destroyed on the

cross. Only after doing so

he gave authority to his

disciples to forgive sins.

Jesus paid the price for the forgiveness of

our sins. After his resurrection and ascension into

heaven the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples

and they became holy and powerful. When people

heard their word they repented and confessed their

sins and received the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Centuries have passed since then.Today

many consider confessions as meaningless. At the

beginning of the Latin Mass the priest asks the

people to repent on their sins. Then all say to-

ever virgin, all the angels and saints, and you my

brothers and sisters/ to pray for me to the Lord

our God . And the priest (celebrant) replies:" May

almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our

sins and bring us to everlasting life."

Many people believe that through this prayer

their sins are forgiven. Is it true? No.In fact it is a

prayer of repentance and not a sacrament of con-

fession. Remember my dear brothers and sisters, through

this prayer your sins are not forgiven. But you have only

expressed your repentance if your prayer has come from

your heart. Let us see what brings forgiveness of sins.

In the book of St.Mathew in chapter 9 we see a

paralised man. Some people brought him to Jesus by

removing the roof of the house where Jesus was. See-

ing their faith Jesus said to the paralytic "Man your sins

are forgiven" The Pharisees heard it and they murmured

that Jesus was blaspheming. Perceiving their thoughts

Jesus asked them which is easier? To say that your sins

are forgiven or to say to get up and walk? They couldn't

reply Jesus. Because it was impossible for them to do

either. They couldn't think of saying to some-

one that your sins are forgiven. Because they

haven't heard it before. They knew only about

the sinful sacrifice which was given by Moses.

Lev 3:1. So they thought Jesus was blasphem-

ing. But Jesus said everything was possible for

him. So he said to the paralytic to stand up and

walk. Immediately he stood up and started to

walk.

Here is the key: First, Jesus forgives his

sins and then heals him. Jesus said to him loudly

"your sins are forgiven" Because that word is

life and spirit (Jn .6:63). He says "you have

already been cleansed by the word that I have

spoken to you" (Jn 15:3). With power and

authority when Jesus said loudly`` your sins

are forgiven'' that man became free.

When a sinful woman washed the feet

of Jesus with tears and wiped his feet with her

hair, Jesus said "woman your sins are

forgiven"(Luke 7:36 -50). So, it is the word

that gives absolution. Today when a priest after

hearing the sin of a confessant should say

loudly that in the name of Jesus or in the name

of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit I

forgive your sins. That gives absolution.

A retreat was going on in a parish many

years ago. It was the day for the Anointing of

the Holy Spirit. After the holy mass we were

to pray for all the participants. The Parish priest

was hearing confessions. I felt a slight pain in my mind. I

realized that the Holy Spirit was asking me to go for con-

fession. But I said, Lord I have confessed two weeks be-

fore, there is nothing rankling in my mind to make a con-

fession. But He insisted me to confess. I approached the

priest and said that I couldn't remember anything to con-

fess. But I confessed that I couldn't be attentive in the Holy

Mass. After that the priest prayed and then said loudly:` I

forgive your sins in the name of Jesus'. His word pierced

my heart. I felt a great relief and experienced the power

of the Holy Spirit coming into my heart. It was the first

time in my life that I felt the power of confession. Never

before have I heard a priest say:` your sins are

forgiven'.Today when I go for confession I long to hear

the priest say` your sins are forgiven'.

I confess to Almighty God/ and to

you my brothers and sisters that

I have sinned through my own fault

(strike the breast) In my thoughts

and in my words, in what I have

done/ and in what I have failed to

do/and/ I ask blessed Mary,

the Lord our God . And the

Twelve years ago a fire broke out in my

kitchen and my body was severely burnt,in the

front and backside. The right breast was com-

pletely burnt; it looked as if I had no breast onthe right side. I was rushed to the hospital and

the treatment lasted for a long time. Even after

the treatment I was unable to lift or move my

right hand as the skin of the arm pit area was

joined. Later I underwent a plastic surgery at

the Manipal medical college which eased some

of my routine functioning.

Meanwhile I became pregnant and gave birth

to my third child. Like all mothers, I wished to

breastfeed my child. However, I was unable to

do so since I had no breast- nipple which too

was burnt. Yet milk was coming out from the

breast area without any control. Though I un-

derwent one more plastic surgery it was of no

help . I used to keep some cotton clothes inside

the brassier to prevent the flow of milk and also

to give a shape to the breast. Though I was wor-

ried about it I did not share this problem with

others, except my husband whose support and advice

helped me to go ahead.

10 years after the fire accident, in 2006, I attended a

'Miracles in Rosary' convention of the 'Spirit in Jesus'team, at Thrissur, Kerala. During the prayer, Br. Tom

Zacharia and Sr. Sindhu, asked people to place their

hands on the areas of the body where they have sick-

ness. Though I had no specific disease at that time, I

simply kept my hands on the chest. Unintentionally my

fingers touched the cotton cloth that was kept inside

my brassier. I suddenly remembered my lost breast and

asked Jesus, with a smile in my heart, if he could make

my right breast as perfect as the left one. When the

healing prayer was over, a severe pain started on my

left breast and I could not lift my hands for the subse-

quent praise and worship prayer . The pain continued

throughout the night. Next day morning, I had no pain

and I went for the Holy Mass. After the Mass I reached

the convention hall for the Rosary prayer. Then the

pain started again, but on my right breast. It gradually

increased and I felt tired and disheartened .

When the convention was over, I went home with

no relief in pain on my breast. However, while chang-

ing my dress, I saw a miracle on my body- a new breast

in the place of my lost breast on the right side similar to

the left breast with nipple in shape and color. Ever since

the accident the right breast area was rose in color but

the new breast looked of normal skin color. I had testi-

fied it in retreats and in the Malayalam magazine 'Itha

Ninte Amma' in the year 2006.

I have one more testimony about my daughter. In

2006 she had been suffering from severe head-

ache. We went to doctors, one after another but

they could not diagnose it. But the headache con-

tinued. Finally, brothers of the Spirit in Jesus came

to my home . They prayed three Rosaries along

with my daughter. Since then my daughter had no

headache at all. Our God is a living God, who

loves us every moment.

 Maria ,Vikroli

I am Maria, a resident of Vikroli. This is

my second retreat. I had severe back ache

and I had been suffering from this pain for

the last 13 years. I couldn't bend, kneel

down,or sit on the ground. I couldn't move

my neck; it was so stiff and because of this

I have been facing much trouble in my daily

life. During healing prayer Jesus touched

me and healed me perfectly and now I can

move my neck, sit on the ground, and kneel

down. He healed me of migraine com-

pletely. I feel happy and light and in my

heart , I feel the presence of Jesus and Holy

Spirit . I thank and praise my Lord for this

wonderful healing.

all on a sudden I had a severe Asthma attack. I had allergy

also, because of which there was swelling on my face. I

consulted a doctor who advised me to avoid certain food

items completely. Whenever I ate fish, beef, pork, etc. , I

got swelling on my face. While the treatment was pro-

gressing I attended a Miracles in Rosary prayer at Vikroli.

During the prayer I had an asthma attack and I thought I

would collapse. Later on to my surprise I found that the

asthma and the allergy had gone and since then I never

had any such problem . Halleluiah, Praise the Lord.

BORN AGAIN IN SPIRIT

birth …. I felt like a new person altogether. When I came

back to Bangalore and resumed my preparations, I felt

that my head and heart had cleared up completely. I

must add - I had attended a number of retreats earlier,

but never before had I experienced this kind of happi-

ness and holiness.

In May, I appeared for my exam. The first

paper was so tough that I returned home literally in tears.

But after reciting a Rosary, I felt calm and comforted. I

appeared for the remaining two papers. After that, I sur-

rendered everything in God's hands, trusting that He

would do only good for me. I prepared myself to accept

whatever He had in store for me.

In July came the results of the exams and I passed

in all. Surprisingly I had scored well for the paper I had

found tough! Words are not enough to thank God for

this miracle He did in my life. Thanks to Spirit In Jesus

also through which Jesus worked this miracle.

I realised that my past failures were just small

hurdles that I had to overcome with the help of the Holy

Spirit in my life. Without the Spirit of God all our ef-

forts would be in vain. My ardent prayer to God is to

guide me in His way since His way is the best and the

ONLY way.

Annie Andrews, Bangalore

My name is Annie Andrews, a native of

Erumely in Kottayam, but I live in Bangalore with

my parents. I had attended the March 2008 Spirit

in Jesus Retreat (Born Again in Spirit) in

Choondal, Thrissur,for a spiritual transformation.

And that is exactly what happened.

I was pursuing my CA course. Everything

was going smooth and I passed all the exams I

wrote, till I reached the second stage of the course.

I passed in three papers, but got stuck in the re-

maining three. Two attempts I made earlier were

in vain; they were by a slender margin trobled me

deeply. I even thought of dropping out of the CA

course. But the remebrance of Mother Mary's di-

vine presence near me sometime back during one

of my earlier examinations, her assurance and en-

couragement, kept me go forward. My final ex-

amination was yet to come in May 2008. I faced a

lot of problems during my preparation and I

struggled a lot every day to study. I knew I was

unhappy internally-spiritually. It weighed heavy

in my heart. On the advice of some of my friends I

joined them in the Spirit InJesus retreat at Choondal

in March 2008.

During the retreat, I experienced a true re-

THE KEYS TO OPEN

THE DOORS OF HEAVEN

Tom Zachariah

HallelujahHallelujahHallelujahHallelujahHallelujahthe door of heaven. Now I tell you about the

second key. It is the word "Hallelujah."

Hallelujah is a Hebrew word. Hallelu =

Praise. Jah =Jahuve, means God. So Hallelu-

jah means Praise the Lord. Saints in heaven

worship God by chanting Hallelujah. We read

in the Book of Revelation: "Then I heard what

seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like

the sound of many waters and like the sound of

mighty thunderpeals, crying out Hallelujah"

(Rev 19:6).

The word Hallelujah has the power to open

the doors of heaven. When we praise the Lord

by saying Hallelujah the doors of the heaven

are opened and showers of blessing start to flow

from there. My experience to the last twenty

years have shown me the power of Hallelujah,

especially during the time of praise and wor-

ship in retreats. When I sing Hallelujah I see

the doors of heaven open and the mighty power

of the Holy Spirit descend upon the people.

Jesus  Jesus  Jesus  Jesus  Jesus Jesus said to Peter "I will give you the

keys of the kingdom of heaven" (Mt.

16:19). When Peter believed and pro-

claimed that Jesus is the Son of the living

God (Mt 16:16) Jesus promised him the

keys of the kingdom of heaven. In the last

issue I wrote on the the first key to open

When the power comes people can't stand in the

presence of God, and many fall down.

When Holy Mary visited the house of

Zachariah, She greeted Elizabeth, the wife of

Zachariah. "When Elizabeth heard Mary's greet-

ing, the child leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth

was filled with the Holy Spirit" (Lk 1:41). Mary,

after receiving the Word from the angel Gabriel,

was visiting Elizabeth. Mary did not pray for Eliza-

beth. She just greeted Elizabeth. The word that

Mary used to greet brought the power of the Holy

Spirit.

The Bible does not mention the word of greet-

ing of Mary. Fifteen years ago while I was reading

this passage, it touched me. I read the passage many

times. I tried to find out the word that Mary used to

greet Elizabeth. But I realised that it is not given in

the Bible. Suddenly my Holy Spirit inspired me to ask

Jesus about the word that Mary used. I asked Jesus about

the secret word. But He did not give me a reply. But I

continued asking Him in my personal prayer. After

many days I heard a question in reply. Jesus asked me:

which word did you use to greet others after your first

charismatic retreat? I said 'Praise the Lord'. And He said:

Mary used the same word - Hallelujah!! - Praise the

Lord.

Today during the time of retreats when I utter the

word Hallelujah I see the mighty power of the Holy

Spirit coming upon the people and they fall down.

Hallelujah

INDIA GETS ITS FIRST

WOMAN SAINTA nun from a remote Kerala village, Sister

Alphonsa, who passed away in 1946, was canon-

ized on Sunday12th October 2008 as India's first

woman saint by Pope Benedict XVI. Sister

Alphonsa who died at the young age of 36, was

conferred sainthood by the Pope at a special cer-

emony at the St.Peter's Square in the Vatican city.

The ceremony was watched by over 5000 Indian

Christians who had come to Rome from India and

other parts of the world as well as thousands of

others back home. Pope said Sister Alphonsa had

been "an exceptional woman, who today is of-

fered to the people of India as their canonized

woman saint."

She had lived in extreme physical and spiritual

suffering and was convinced that her cross was

the very means of reaching the heavenly banquet

prepared for her by the Father, the Pope said.

"Sister Alphonsa's heroic virtues of patience, for-

titude and perseverance in the midst of deep suf-

fering remind us that God always provides the

strength we need to overcome every trial," he said.

"I invite prayers for reconciliation and peace in

situations which provoke alarm and great suffering."

The Pope read out passages from the Bible and excerpts

from her biography. "As the Christian faithful of India

give thanks to God for their first native daughter to be

presented for public veneration, I wish to assure them

of my prayers during this difficult time," he said.

Sister Alphonsa is the first woman from India to be

conferred sainthood and the second Roman Catholic

from the country after Gonsalo Garcia, who was con-

ferred the honour in 1862. Sister Alphonsa who lived a

quiet religious life helping people before passing away

at the age of 36 over six decades ago, was hailed for a

number of miracles, including the two which were offi-

cially put up to the Pope. One of the miracles attributed

to her is related to the healing of a boy's twisted feet

after his family prayed at her tomb at Alphonsa chapel

at Bharananganam near Kottayam.

The pope also canonized three others - Maria Bernarda

Butler from Switzerland, Narcisa de Jesus Marlillo

Moran from Ecuador and Father Gaetano Errico from

Italy.

ORISSA CM SEEKSUNIFIED ACTION TO

RESTORE PEACECaught in the vortex of continuing communal

violence in Kandhamal, Chief Minister Naveen

Patnaik appealed to all sections of the society to

lend support to help restore normalcy and peace in

the state. The Chief Minister made the appeal at

the National Integration Council meeting held in

New Delhi.

Responding to riots, Naveen said Orissa was

passing through "trying times" and there was need

for "unified and affirmative action" by the "entire civil

society to assist the government in bringing normalcy

and maintaining peace." He said, "The entire nation

must fight divisive forces which spread hatred, fanati-

cism and recrimination."

Naveen told the meeting that over eight years of its

incumbency, his government did not witness any com-

munal violence "except for the two unfortunate inci-

dents" in Kandhamal district in December 2007 and this

August. "Orissa has an excellent track record of peace

and harmony and remarkably free of considerations of

casteism and communalism," he said.

The CM condemned the communal violence and the

nun rape incident, which he described as "shameful and

barbaric". He said "prompt action has been taken

against police officials, who have neglected their duty";

in the nun case a judicial inquiry has been ordered into

the incident. Incidents in Kandhamal were happening

in the backdrop of the worst floods in the post indepen-

dent history of Orissa, he said, appealing to the Union

government for central assistance for the four million

people affected by the floods. Refering to the genesis

of the Kandhamal problem, the CM said, it had a "long

history of ill feeling and suspicion between the STs and

SCs on a variety of issues such as forcible occupation

of land of the tribals, jobs secured on the basis of false

certificates."
