Next Newsletter: October 25, 2012 October 11, 2012 HRS NEWS Dear Parents, Students and Staff, Wow! Tomorrow is the last day of the first quarter of the 2012-2013 school year! Be sure to watch for your students’ report cards to come home with them on Friday, October 19 th . Your students should also bring home a Parent/Teacher Conference form today or tomorrow. Please be sure to check the dates and times with your calendar and return the form to your child’s homeroom teacher by Wednesday, October 17 th . Conferences have been scheduled for the week of October 22-26 th . Conferences are such a valuable opportunity for parents and teachers to continue in partnership in the best interests of our students! We are grateful for the support and cooperation of Holy Rosary parents! Parents, please remember that if you plan to volunteer at Holy Rosary in any capacity working with children (classroom helper, tutor, coach, chaperone, other) you MUST participate in the diocesan Safe Environment/Youth Protection Program training. Training includes attending a group or individual session with Kairon Unfried, signing a Best Practices form and passing a background check (paid for by the parish). If you are unable to attend a scheduled training session, you may contact Kairon Unfried directly to make alternate arrangements at 471-7228. Thank you for working with us to provide a safe environment for all our children. Monday, October 15 th is the first day of the second quarter, a new day, a fresh start! When we start a new quarter, most people think of grades and behaviors and school “stuff”! The new quarter should certainly be about that – refreshing study habits, stepping up efforts at organization, improving behaviors, brightening attitudes, renewing enthusiasm for the “work” of school! But the new quarter is also an opportunity for a fresh start outside the work of school! We can renew our decision to get to mass on Sunday, add to our prayer routine or create a prayer routine, volunteer in service of others, do kind deeds for friends, neighbors, family. Let’s each take some time to make a conscious decision to start the second quarter off on the right foot, whatever that step may be for each one of us! In today’s school mass, Father Bernie reminded us that Jesus calls us to not only pray for our own needs, but to also remember the needs of others in our prayers. May God bless each one of us with a prayerful heart for the needs of others. Know of our daily prayers for our students, staff and all of our families. SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR RESULTS

Great News! Our Scholastic Book Fair was definitely successful, and we were able to purchase many books for our library as well as saving a portion of our profits

for future library investments! I am grateful to many for their help in setting up for the

fair, assisting during the fair, and closing it up. I am particularly thankful to parents who encouraged their children to purchase books, revealing their own

appreciation and love of reading. Strong seventh graders were so very helpful in packing up books to return.

Thank you all for your support! Mrs. Pfafflin

Catholic Identity Corner October – Month of Mary Do you know these names for Mary?

Queen of Angels – Mary was a messenger of God’s Word. Queen of Patriarchs – Mary is looked to as a leader of our Christian family. Queen of Prophets – Mary’s sayings at the Annunciation and the Magnificat were divinely inspired. Queen of Martyrs – Mary gave her life to God and her Son, Jesus. Queen of Confessors – Mary intercedes on behalf of sinners. Queen of all Saints – Mary is a model of holiness and Christ-like living. Queen of Peace – Mary fosters harmony among people. Queen of Apostles – Mary was a faithful disciple of her Son, Jesus.

Prayers for the Intercession of Mary: Memorare Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession, was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence , I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To thee I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate! Despise not my petitions, but, in thy mercy, hear and answer me. Amen. Hail, Holy Queen Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve: to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears. Turn then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus, O merciful, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary! Amen.

The YEAR OF FAITH Officially begins

THURSDAY OCT 11, 2012

To honor the fiftieth anniversary of the Second

Vatican Council and the twentieth anniversary of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Pope

Benedict XVI has announced a Year of Faith, starting October 11 and ending November 24, 2013, to strengthen the faith of Catholics and draw the world to faith by their example. The Year of Faith is meant to reflect one of the

themes of Pope Benedict's pontificate, the New Evangelization.

Join us for Mass at Saint

Benedict Cathedral at 6:30 p.m.

A Family that Prays Together…….. Back in the 1970’s there was a TV show on the air called A Matter of Faith. The host was Father Patrick Peyton and it was he who first coined the phrase “A family that prays together stays together.” Father Peyton has since become known as the Rosary Priest. Before his death in 1991 he was a strong advocate of families praying the Rosary together as a way to strengthen the spiritual well-being of the family.

The month of October is one of two months in which we honor Mary. Both months, May & October, are seasonal months of change- of death and new life so they seem to help tell the Christian story….the story of Jesus’ dying and rising.

This past Sunday we celebrated the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary and as we prayed together in Church (both Sunday and Monday) I was moved by the power of communal prayer. I could not help but think of the Communion of Saints as I heard 300+ school children and faculty praying the Hail Mary in unison. What our song of prayer and praise must sound like to our God. What joy we must bring.

Imagine what the sound of praise would sound like coming from your home every night. God would come to miss it if he didn’t hear it one night – just like as parents we would miss our children song if they did not tell us they loved us every night.

The rosary is a great prayer to say through the month of October (and every month). Even if your children are small and a 5 decade rosary is too much, try praying a decade a day (and don’t forget to begin by reading the mystery meditation for each decade.

After school (3:00-4:00) One day a week per group (8 Classes) Classes held at Holy Rosary Catholic School

Give your child the gift of languages! Spanish is becoming one of the most common languages in the world. NEW - High School Spanish Preparatory Course - This class is for students in the 7th and 8th grades that are planning to take Spanish in High School. It will prepare your student to succeed in Spanish at the High School level. This class emphasizes grammar structure, verb conjugation, and vocabulary usage, while still continuing to expose students to the reading, listening, writing, and speaking skills. NEW - Spanish for Heritage Speakers Course - This class is for a unique and growing student population in the United States of Hispanic descendants who has been exposed to the Spanish language mainly with their families at home.
