FAZtor ’s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora Preparations are in the works for the upcoming Holy Name School 75th Anniversary celebration on Sep-tember 24. The committee is hard at work planning

the special day; please help us spread the word to your families, neighbors and other HN graduates. Of course this would not be possi-ble if it were not for the efforts of the Sisters of Mercy, opening the school in September of 1941. We have learned that our own Sisters of Mercy have come down with an outbreak of Norovirus –the “cruise ship” disease, at their Motherhouse and Mercy Center in Burlingame. The virus was sourced to an outside visitor to the facilities. Our own Sr. Edith Hurley was affected and is now recovering. As a result, the buildings are tempo-rarily closed until the quarantine and subsequent cleaning are re-solved. All 52 sisters have been confined to their rooms. Unfortunately this led to their kitchen being closed, and the staff cannot return until the San Mateo Health Department gives approval. The Sisters are looking for donations to help with this sud-den crisis. The cost of feeding one sister is $25 per day, and the ulti-mate cost of cleaning the facilities, with supplies and labor is expected to surpass $30,000. What can we do to help? The Sisters are asking for prayers for those who have fallen ill, as this can be life-threatening to older adults. They are also asking for your consideration of a financial gift to help with their unexpected expenses. Donations can be made to “Sisters of Mercy”, and sent to 2300 Adeline Drive, Burlingame, CA 94030. Please add the memo of “Norovirus Appeal” on your contribution check.

As the Sisters of Mercy were here at Holy Name for our School children over 50 years, we ask that you remember them all in your prayers, as well as our most recently deceased Alumni. Although our motto is “No one a stranger”, we are always here for any of our Holy Name Family member’s needs, be it a Baptism, Wedding, Funeral, or prayers in a time of need. We have lost one of our material donors – Susan Nervo Giammattei, HN ’71. Sue has been so helpful in the last several years, providing the large palms for our Procession every Palm Sunday, either through her job at Golden Gate Park, or through her contacts. Unfortunately Sue was fatally injured in an automobile accident in Petaluma. We send our sympathies to her husband, Joe and her brother, Greg Nervo ‘74, her Funeral Mass was celebrated at Holy Name last Friday.

“When we wake up, we take a moment to think about the privi-lege to be alive. The moment we start acting that life is a blessing then we start to feel fully blessed.”

When you are dissatisfied and would like to go back to youth, just think of algebra. And the Latin Mass.

NERT is a free training program for individuals, neighborhood groups and community-based organizations in San Francisco. Through this program, individuals will learn the basics of personal preparedness and prevention. The training also includes hands-on disaster skills that will help individuals respond to a personal emergency as well as act as members of a neighborhood response team. A typical NERT volunteer is not one type. The NERT volun-teer is anyone who is active and involved in the community--or wants to be. NERT teams are best formed in neighborhoods through a part-nership with existing community groups such as a Neighborhood Watch program, Rotary Club, business group, faith based group or homeowners association. Together with their neighbors, team mem-bers and coworkers, they build a NERT network within their own com-munity, teaming with the San Francisco Fire Department. All residents can benefit from NERT training. (Participations under 18 require the signature of a parent or guardian.) NERT connects volunteers with a network of fellow volun-teers all working together for a common cause. NERT members are trained citizen first responders who can help save lives. The NERT Training Program is a 20 hour comprehensive program consisting of six (6) class sessions. Delivery of these 6 ses-sions is offered in a variety of scheduling options. Every potential vol-unteer must 1) attend and complete all six classes; 2) upon completion of the training, SFFD may provide a certification; 3) individuals who complete the program and obtain certification may be invited to volun-teer; and 4) all individuals invited to volunteer continue to do so at the discretion of SFFD. The training instructors are professional firefighters. There is no cost for our neighborhood training classes. There is a fee for pri-vate training. Holy Name will be hosting neighborhood training clas-ses. Here’s the schedule for the training classes to be presented in Flanagan Center.

Gospel Reading Luke 12:32-48 You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come. Jesus' instructions on how to be ready for the coming judg-ment continue in the stories and sayings found in today's Gospel. We are not to be like the greedy rich man in last Sunday's Gospel who planned to store his great harvest in barns rather than share it. We are, rather, to share our wealth with those in need. The antidote for the anxiety brought on by the coming judgment is to relinquish our posses-sions and provide for the needs of others. Our treasure will be in heav-en where it will not wear out or be destroyed. The other major way to be ready for the coming judgment is to be watchful. In Luke's Gospel, Jesus tells a parable about watchful-ness to begin making this point. We must be like servants waiting for the master's return from a wedding banquet, which, even now, can last for a few days in the Middle East. We must be watchful so that even if the master comes after midnight, we will be ready for him. This is what the coming of the Son of Man will be like. Peter asks if this parable is meant for the apostles or for the large crowd that has gathered to listen to Jesus. Without answering Peter's question, Jesus responds with another parable about servants awaiting the return of their master. It begins with a question: “Who, then, is the faithful and prudent steward whom the master will put in charge of his servants to distribute the food allowance at the proper time?” This parable adds to the theme of watchfulness; it explains how to wait and reminds us of the reward for the faithful follower at the heavenly banquet after the judgment. If it is addressed to the apostles, then it could also be addressed to leadership in the early Church. Ei-ther way, the parables reminds us that we should be found doing our jobs when the master arrives. If we are doing our jobs, our reward will be great. But if we relax, neglect our duties, and begin to act like the greedy rich man—eating, drinking, and making merry—we will not have a place in the kingdom. Watchfulness means living in such a consistently moral and obedient way that we are always ready to give an account to God of how we have lived.
