MISSION STATEMENT ✝ Holy Family Catholic Church is a spiritually and socially active parish. Rooted in the Word of God and nourished by the Eucharist, we cele-brate the life of our Lord Jesus Christ by proclaiming the Good News and providing spiritual growth, support and service with love. Founded by Italian immigrants a century ago, today our parish continues the tradition of extending a loving, caring and affirming welcome to all who join us as we Continue Our Journey of Faith.

Dear Parishioners: Jesus often seemed to confront others but was also confronted by others. One of the most difficult confrontations was with His own disciples who, along with the apostles, had faithfully followed Him. The issue was the Eucharist - Jesus was adamant that He was capable not only of multiplying loaves and fish to feed thousands, but capable of giving His “flesh as real food and His blood as real drink.” He was equally adamant about the fact that this food would continue to bring life, despite their inability to understand how. The Eucharist demands faith on our part. Faith demands that we let go of our pre-conceived notions and think and act “outside of the box.” Pope Benedict XVI has declared October 11, 2012 - November 24, 2013, a

“Year of Faith.” As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 2nd Vatican Council, many plans and activities will help us to promote this Year of Faith and will be announced. Peace, Msgr. Paul STEWARDSHIP CORNER A Word of Gratitude...Good Stewardship To all who were involved in the informal reception of “meeting and greeting” fellow parish leaders held on August 13. To our

Stewardship Committee who organized the event, to the young people of the Neo- Catechumenal Way for serving as “waiters” and “waitresses,” to Debbie Mastroeni and Ellen Filippi, who decorated and, most of all, to Phil Hui, our Stewardship Council Chairperson, who put this all into motion.

To “Lovestruck,” a florist owned by Jone & Ed Gesumaria, for donating the beautiful hydrangeas adorning the trellis, and for decorating the trellis, around the Blessed Virgin in honor of the Solemnity of the Assumption.

Interview with Christina Mastroeni Christina Mastroeni was born and raised in Nutley and at Holy Family. She was a student at Good Shepherd Academy (GSA) then attended Mount St. Dominic Academy. This year she will be a senior Holy Family University in Philadelphia. While at GSA, she was involved in Scouting since she was in Kindergarten and she also played softball and sang in the choir. At 10 years of age, she was part of the group that started the Junior Youth Group (JYG) in 2001. At the first meeting there were over 50 kids. They met on Sunday nights and had fun learning scriptures. For Christina, the JYG was more of a receiving time instead of a giving time. A special memory she shared while she was in the JYG was when her uncle passed away and the youth minister, Amy Jackson (DiCristo), sent her a letter to comfort her. This touched Christina as it made her feel wanted and appreciated in the JYG. Her gifts of time and talent in the JYG did not go unnoticed by the Youth Minister of the Senior Youth Group (SYG) at the time. He had mentioned to Christina’s mother, Debbie, “I see something in her. She needs to be here [in the Senior Youth Group]. The Lord is in her. She is not afraid to pray and she understands Scriptures.” So when Christina was 13 years old, she courageously went, by her

MARIA SS. ADDOLORATA OFFERING BLANKET Several years ago, we introduced the “Maria SS. Addolorata Offering Blanket” to the Italian Festival. It has proven to be a beautiful acknowledgment of our Sorrowful Mother. A donation on the Offering Blanket brings hope to the ill, is in memory of the deceased, or is offered for a very special intention. On the 2nd Friday of each month, a special Italian Mass in

honor of The Devotees of Maria Santissima Addolorata is offered for their intentions at 7:00 P.M. During the festival, the blanket will be on display in our Italian Café for the entire 4 days. The presentation of the blanket will take place on Saturday evening, during the candlelight procession following the 7:00 PM Mass. If you wish to take part in the Offering Blanket, you may submit your donation to Holy Family Church along with the intention you wish for the blanket. Kindly make your check payable to Holy Family Church, but mark the envelope MEMORIAL BLANKET. As always, the blanket will be a magnificent tribute to Our Lady of Sorrows. For more information, please call Gina Tamburri at 973-751-4187.

Continued from page 2… self, to her first SYG meeting. Being with the SYG helped her to open up more. She strengthened her foundation and experienced more spiritual growth during that time. When a new Senior Youth Minister came, Christina recalls that, “He was like a guardian angel. He was the first to tell me wrong or right. He didn’t sugar coat and I was so thankful for that.” It was this youth minister that encouraged, or “badgered” as Christina would put it, the SYG to have retreats. So when she was 15 years old, Christina and the SYG put together their first overnight retreat. It was called “Albatross to Phoenix” and it was a great success. Since then, retreats and outreach have played a big part in her personal and spiritual learning and growth. Christina was also part of the 2nd Annual Canadian Pilgrimage with the First Saturday Families, where the

youth of Holy Family would assist our brothers and sisters with disabilities on this annual pilgrimage. Christina recalls, “I had never done anything like that. For example, I had to learn to take care of someone else first before myself. This was a challenge because, being an only child, I had developed self-independence and now I have to think about others. This was a completely different thought process to become more independent while learning to take care of myself and others.” She had gone on this pilgrimage for 4 years and Msgr. Paul was her spiritual guide. She got what God needed her to get from this experience and was now able to move on to use her time and talent elsewhere. At 16 years old, Christina was the youngest member of the team for Theology of the Body. They put together a function called “Legends of the Hidden Temple.” “This was the favorite one I’ve run. It taught me to work with people with different views and the physical challenges made it a lot of fun.” As a freshman at Holy Family University, Christina noticed that there was no spirituality group on campus. Taking the initiative, she got together with some friends in school to start something because Christina felt that the students needed a place to mature spiritually. She approached the Sisters in the school and started a group for Adoration and called it HOPE, which stands for “Hour of Power Experience.” Next, following the example of the Youth Minister when she was in the Senior Youth Group, she became the one suggesting and badgering to have retreats for the students. She had initially gotten resistance from school administration but, with perseverance and the support of her group, she was able to make it happen. “I prayed to God, ‘If you want me to do this, please show me something’… and He did.” The “Jesus All Nighter” became a reality. Twenty-four hours of Adoration, faith sharing, skits and Rosary. What started with 6 people eventually swelled to 34-40 people who were present at one point. “We tried everything we could so people could relate. We wanted to also give an opportunity for the non-Catholics going to a Catholic school to know the faith of the school they were attending.” “I learned so much, from planning the event, to putting together business proposals, to public speaking, but the most important thing I got out of it was learning to trust and have confidence and faith in God.” Retreats continued to enrich her life. Last summer Christina participated in a retreat run by the school in Albany. “This nature-theme retreat helped me learn how to ask for help because the only way to make it through the nature course was to ask for help. Being so independent, I had to learn to develop more confidence so I can ask for help.” Even while away at college, her time, experience and foundation with the SYG allowed her to help and influence the youth beyond Holy Family. For example, a local church in Philadelphia, Our Lady of Fatima, a mainly Spanish-speaking parish, had reached out to the college kids at her school to help their youth group because the church could not afford a youth minister. Christina suggested putting together a Living Stations of the Cross for Holy Week. Again, at first there was no one on her side to support this. Because she felt strongly about this, that it was great way for the kids to open up and learn their faith, she moved on faith and started from scratch, working with 12 kids from the youth group and, successfully, put on the first Living Stations of the Cross, in English, on Palm Sunday, just as she had with the SYG here at Holy Family. “There were lots of struggles, from time to opposition from people, so I had learned to work with people’s weaknesses and strengths but it was truly a work of God that made it happen.” Where did she develop her foundation of Stewardship? “I learned by example from my family, friends, youth group and especially, from my grandma and Rosie, my Confirmation sponsor. It’s how I was raised. It had always been a part of my life.” “I did have a struggle understanding the concept of time as it relates to Stewardship, that is, until I went to Ecuador on a missionary trip with Rostro de Cristo that was sponsored by my school. This was for 9 days to the third poorest area of Ecuador, a town called Duran. On this trip you could not give material things, gifts or money. This mission was based on making relationships with the people in the town. We sat with people everyday just to talk with them and listen. That was enough. All they wanted was our time. We sat on dirt and cement floors, in homes made of straw and driftwood, while just talking to them. For us to spend 1, 2, 3 hours there, was a Godsend for them. Time was all we could give them. We also visited a colony of recovering lepers (in process of being cured so it was not contagious). We sat and talked about leprosy. A REMINDER ABOUT APPROPRIATE SUMMER ATTIRE

AT MASS Dressing for Mass is simply a matter of showing proper respect, not only for God, but for others around you. Remember the days when we wore our “Sunday best,” our finest outfits, to Mass? Dress codes at Mass have certainly relaxed over the years. With the warm weather upon us, it is particularly important that we dress appropriately and modestly for Mass, so here are some rules to follow for modest and proper Mass attire during the summer months: ❀ Hemlines on dresses and skirts fall at or just above the knee ❀ Hemlines on shorts fall near the knee (no short-shorts) ❀ Shoulders and midriffs are covered ❀ Necklines are modest - not low-cut ❀ No beachwear - swimsuits with cover-ups for females, swim trunks for males ❀ No muscle tee-shirts ❀ No exposed undergarments.

STAND AND BE COUNTED: NEW MEMBERS WELCOME

Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and a commitment to the life of the parish family. To so clearly state your Catholic commitment in all its dimensions brings you advantages, recognition, and responsibilities of many kinds.

Being a registered parishioner makes things much easier when it is time for infant baptism, school registration, weddings, when asked to be a baptismal or confirmation sponsor, and even funerals. We are often asked to provide affidavits for baptismal and confirmation sponsors. We can only do this if a person is a registered, active, and contributing member in our parish. How do you know if you are already registered? A registered parishioner receives all parish mailings. Most recently, a newly revised census form was sent with the summer newsletter and upcoming raffles. We ask that you complete that form — or complete it on the web: www.holyfamilynutley.org — as soon as you have the opportunity.

Have You Seen Our New Website? Mike Ramos has done a really great job reworking the website and putting it out there on Facebook. Please take a few minutes to view. Visit: www.holyfamilynutley.org. If you’d like to drop Mike a line, his email is: [email protected].

NOMINATION FOR STEWARD OF THE MONTH

When deciding to nominate a person for the Steward of the Month Award, we should consider the following: The TIME that this person dedicates to parish activities, community events, personal time with others

in need of assistance, spiritual aid and/or companionship. The TALENT that this person offers to the parish and community, willingly and lovingly. The TREASURE this person offers to the parish and community. Has he or she accepted the divine call to extend God’s blessings on those less fortunate through personal sacrificial giving? These are important factors to consider when proposing a person for nomination. Often a prayer to the Holy Spirit is helpful, too, in discerning the name for nomination. Please fill out the nomination form and return it in an envelope marked “Stewardship Committee” to nominate a parishioner as Steward of the Month. ✄-------------------------------------------------------------------------

MISTAKEN IDENTITY A man was being tailgated on a city street in heavy traffic. Suddenly, the light turned yellow just in front of him. He did the right thing by stopping at the crosswalk, even though he could have beaten the red light by a last-minute acceleration through the intersection. The tailgating woman must already have been stressed out. Who knows what was going on in her life? Her reaction to the sudden stop was startling. She hit the ceiling and the horn, screaming in frustration at missing the chance to get through the light and making rude gestures. While she was still yelling and carrying on at the driver in front of her, she heard a tap, tap on her car window and looked up into the unsmiling face of a tall, burly police officer ordering her to get out of her car with her hands up. He put her in the back seat of his patrol car and took her to the police station, where she called a lawyer and was searched, fingerprinted, photographed, and placed in a holding cell. After a couple of hours, she was escorted to the booking desk, where the arresting officer was waiting with her lawyer. He said, “I'm very sorry, ma’am. This has all been a big mistake. You see, I pulled up behind your car while you were blowing your horn, flipping off the guy in front of you, and cursing a blue streak at him. I noticed the ‘Choose Life’ license plate holder, the bumper stickers saying ‘What would Jesus do?’ and the ‘Follow me to Saint Dominic’s’, and the rosary hanging from your rear-view mirror. Naturally, I assumed you must have stolen the car.”
