MISSION STATEMENT Holy Family Catholic Church is a spiritually and socially active parish. Rooted in the Word of God and nourished by the Eucharist, we cele-brate the life of our Lord Jesus Christ by proclaiming the Good News and providing spiritual growth, support and service with love. Founded by Italian immigrants a century ago, today our parish continues the tradition of extending a loving, caring and affirming welcome to all who join us as we Continue Our Journey of Faith.

CALLED BY GOD Today’s scriptures invite us to listen to two calls. The first is the call issued by the LORD to the prophet Amos, the “shepherd and a dresser of sycamores” (Amos 7:14). The second is the call the Lord Jesus issued to the Twelve, whom he sent out “two by two” (Mark 6:7). These faithful people responded to the call, prophesying and preaching to the people to whom they had been sent. Each of us received a call when we were baptized. The second reading invites us to ponder that call as we are reminded that we are chosen in Christ and that, in love, God “destined us for adoption” (Ephesians 1:5). As adopted daughters and sons of God we are called to bring the presence of Christ into our marriages, families, schools, and places of work. Let us be inspired today to say yes to the call we hear once again through God’s living word.

15th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B - 2018 My brothers and sisters in the Lord! As we look at the Scriptures of this day, we might ask ourselves why a shepherd would be tending sycamore trees. It seems odd that Amos, the shepherd, would also be pruning trees. Both jobs, being a shepherd and being a tender of sycamore trees, were often the work of very poor people who looked for odd jobs in order to gain some money on a day-to-day basis in order to provide for food and living. The type of sycamore that Amos would have tended was not the sort of sycamore tree familiar in our own country; it was a rather prickly bush which produced

small fruits. These fruits would normally be very bitter; however, if the dresser of the tree pierced each fruit, a little grub would get inside and make the bitter fruit sweet and edible. It was a prickly and painful job which most people would prefer not to do. Only those who were poor would do it in order to live. But God had other plans for Amos. The Lord called a very poor man to do His will and confront the king of Israel, Jeroboam, and his priest, Amaziah. It was Amos’ task to reveal the kingdom’s injustice and lack of faithfulness to God. Of course, like all God’s prophets, Amos met opposition but we remember him today as one of God’s great prophets, even though he came from a surprising background. He had the task of making a bitter kingdom sweet again with God’s justice. In the same way, Jesus called the Twelve from surprising and desperate work places, for example, fishermen from their nets and Matthew, the tax collector, from his office, and gave them a new task; they were to call people to repentance and new life in Christ. To be called to do God’s work is truly a great honor as well as a responsibility. The dignity of a Christian is described in the letter to the Ephesians. The Father has forgiven our sins and poured out the richness of God’s grace and blessings upon us. We are stamped with the seal of the Holy Spirit at Baptism and Confirmation in order to be a new creation and members of the body of Christ, sharing in Christ’s life and ministry in the world. The dismissal which we hear in the new translation of the Roman Missal of the Mass, “Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life,” is what Amos and the Apostles were called to do. We are sent out from the Mass renewed and refreshed to make the good news of Jesus’ promise of love and mercy known to others. We are sent out to free people from the things that oppress them, as well as to help establish a kingdom built upon the values of justice; peace and love in the power of the Holy Spirit. We are sent out to bring healing and support those who are sick and weary. Like Amos and the Apostles we, too, are sent out to help make places where there is bitterness or sadness into places of joy and love. We might wonder why God has chosen us to do this but, like Amos and like the Apostles, we might be surprised at what we actually can do in the power of God’s Holy Spirit. Peace, Fr. Joe

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE “He instructed them to take nothing for the journey but a walking stick – no food, no sack, no money in their belts.” (MARK 6:8) How different we are from the Apostles who took nothing when they ventured out to serve God. Today, we make our life’s journey more difficult because of all the material baggage that we drag along. When we really put God first in everything and put money and possessions second, we experience more freedom to joyfully serve God and others. For Sunday, July 8, 2018, The actual collection was $10,103.00 $1,603.00 of which came from WeShare. The 2nd Collection for Church Needs was $1,991.00. Mass Attendance was 1,274. God Bless You for your generosity!

For Sunday, July 9, 2017, The actual collection was $8,970.00;

$1,480.00 of which came from Parish Pay. The 2nd Collection for Church Steps was $1,879.00.

Mass Attendance was 1,351.

Movie and Pizza Night You are invited to join the Community of God’s Love, Rutherford’s Catholic Charismatic Community, to view The Shack, the 2017 film based on the popular novel by William P. Young. This movie tells the story of Mack

Phillips (Sam Worthington) who has suffered an unendurable tragedy in his life. A mysterious letter invites him to a shack in the woods where he has a very unusual encounter with the persons of the Trinity who appear in human form. They spend the weekend helping Mack unpack his grief and progress toward healing. This event will take place on Friday, July 20, at 7:30 p.m. at Visitation House, 70 West Passaic Avenue, Rutherford. For more information, call 201–935–0344 or email [email protected] Free will offering. No registration is necessary.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION At the time of the Reformation, although England broke away from papal authority under Henry VIII, a silent majority clung to the Catholic faith. Henry’s eldest daughter, Mary, restored the “old religion” in a fierce persecution of Protestants (she is called “Bloody Mary” for good reason.) His youngest daughter,

Elizabeth, rejected papal ties. Under her reign, beginning with legislation in 1593, Catholics were persecuted again, and only the very wealthy could afford the fines for not attending Anglican services on Sunday. They were called “recusants,” from a Latin word meaning “refuse,” since they refused to attend the liturgy of the Church of England. Many families maintained Catholic tradition in secret, and today their descendants claim “Recusancy” as a mark of family pride. For generations they sent their young people abroad to be educated in convents and monasteries. It is not surprising that the first monastery in colonial America springs from Holland with the daughters of patrician English recusant families. Port Tobacco, Maryland, proved fruitful soil for the Carmelite tradition.

Thursday Friends is a safe place; we will have discussions about making friends, sharing life experiences, who we are and what we can do to enrich our lives. Beginning Thursday, July 19, we will meet each Thursday, at 1:00 PM in the St. Anthony Room of the Parish Center. There will surely be something you will find of interest. Each week will be a different topic, sharing forum and a Scripture to help us get through the week.
