MISSION STATEMENT Holy Family Catholic Church is a spiritually and socially active parish. Rooted in the Word of God and nourished by the Eucharist, we cele-brate the life of our Lord Jesus Christ by proclaiming the Good News and providing spiritual growth, support and service with love. Founded by Italian immigrants a century ago, today our parish continues the tradition of extending a loving, caring and affirming welcome to all who join us as we Continue Our Journey of Faith.

4th Sunday in Lent A-2017 My brothers and sisters in the Lord! In the ancient Jewish world, blindness was not considered a physical ailment. In popular thought, it carried a terrible stigma. This arose from a false interpretation of the Law of Moses which stated that people who were blind or lame could not fight in the army of God’s people. There was a good reason for this; soldiers who could not move fast or see clearly could not be of much help to their comrades. However, an extreme interpretation of the rule concluded wrongly

that anyone who could not fight in God’s army could never enter God’s kingdom. They were also classified as sinners and that, in turn, led them to being refused work and reduced to begging. This point of view was never officially endorsed but its popular acceptance is seen when Jesus’ disciples ask Him this question: “Was this man born blind because of a sin he committed before he was born or was it because of his parents sins?” Jesus emphatically denies that the man’s blindness was caused by anyone’s sin and, on the contrary, this man will make God’s works visible. This passage is long and complicated. We learn of a formerly blind man (and notice how briefly the miracle itself is described - - over and done in just a few sentences) who then becomes increasingly full of life and very soon teaches the Pharisees the ways of God. Meanwhile, they regress further and further into a spiritual darkness. The Pharisees become more and more obsessed about how a sinner could possibly open the eyes of a man who was born blind because they cannot see past Jesus’ breaking the law by healing on the Sabbath. They dismiss Jesus as a sinner. The Pharisees persist in questioning the man so he repeats the story and even asks them if they would like to become disciples of Jesus. They furiously insist that they are the disciples of Moses. As the blind man moves closer toward Jesus, the light of the world, the Pharisees move further away, deeper into darkness. There is another aspect to this light and darkness scenario which is exemplified by the parents of the blind man. The parents try to remain non-committal. They are asked whether this is their son and if he was indeed born blind. If that was so, they want to know how he can now see. They replied yes to the first two questions but refused to comment on his new sight. They respond: “He is old enough: let him speak for himself.” They respond this way because they fear being expelled from the synagogue if they are perceived to be followers of Jesus. We see in the Gospels that people either accept Jesus as the light or they reject Him and remain in darkness. There is no middle road. Later, Jesus will insist that there is only one sign for those who claim to be His disciples and who follow in His light; they are to love one another in the same way that He loves us. My brothers and sisters, as we continue the Lenten journey, this is the time to open our hearts to the reconciliation which is offered through the sacrament of reconciliation and let go of the things that weigh us down, especially those moments when we refuse to open our hearts to loving others as Jesus loves us. Peace, Fr. Joe

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The church slowly developed customs of reserving some portion of the Eucharistic sacrifice for the sake of the dying. Today’s custom of placing this portion in a tabernacle for prayer and adoration by the faithful cannot be traced back much beyond the year 1,000, much to almost everyone’s surprise. There is simply no historical evidence of the Blessed Sacrament being present in a church for the purpose of having the faithful visit it or pray before it earlier in the church’s history. People did visit, of course, but the center of their attention was the altar, symbol of Christ’s sacrifice and the touchpoint between heaven and earth. Shrines and devotional altars abounded in medieval churches, but anything we might describe as a Blessed Sacrament chapel would be hard to find. Amazingly, the Eucharist was first kept in private houses for the purpose of Holy Communion at home. As for church, the custom gradually developed of suspending a vessel shaped like a dove somewhere in the church, often over the altar. In the hovering bird, a few hosts, enough to satisfy the pastoral needs of the dying, would be secreted. The priest would lower the dove on a pulley as needed, but it wasn’t a focus of devotion by visitors to the church. It was simply a way of reassuring bishops who were nervous about safeguarding the Eucharist. The dove solution caught on in England and France after Crusaders came in contact with the custom in their travels in the Orthodox East.

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE “Not as man sees does God see, because man sees the appearance but the Lord looks into the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7 How often do we invest our time, talent and treasure in creating an appearance that does not matter at all to God? We strive to impress with our clothing, home, career, possessions, car and other marks of distinction. But none of these illusions of greatness will impress God. Instead, He will look into our hearts to see how much we loved Him, how much we loved others and how we showed that love by the way we used our time, talents and treasure here on earth.

ARCHDIOCESE OF NEWARK - 2017 LENTEN REGULATIONS 1. The days of both Fast and Abstinence during Lent are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (or Holy Saturday night) as the “paschal fast” to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily His Resurrection. The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence.

On a day of Fast, only one (1) full meal is permitted, and two (2) smaller meals, which, if added together, would not exceed the main meal in quantity. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast. On a day of Abstinence, no meat may be eaten. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence.

2. The obligation to observe the laws of Fast and Abstinence “substantially,” or as a whole, is a serious obligation. 3. The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional

abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary self-denial as penance. 4. The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty*) extends from the First Sunday of Lent, February March 5, 2017 to the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity, June 11, 2017. *Canon 920, §1.
