MISSION STATEMENT ✝ Holy Family Catholic Church is a spiritually and socially active parish. Rooted in the Word of God and nourished by the Eucharist, we cele-brate the life of our Lord Jesus Christ by proclaiming the Good News and providing spiritual growth, support and service with love. Founded by Italian immigrants a century ago, today our parish continues the tradition of extending a loving, caring and affirming welcome to all who join us as we Continue Our Journey of Faith.

Dear Parishioners: The first reading in today’s liturgy focuses on Elijah, the faithful prophet who finds himself in,

what we would call, a state of depression. He had done what God expected of him, he had challenged Israel to accept the true God and return to the covenant; he had proven the prophets of Beal to be false prophets and now it all appeared to have been in vain.

The queen wanted him killed. Elijah wanders into the desert, falls asleep discouraged and depressed, and is twice awakened by an angel. Both times the angel offers him a scone of bread and a jug of water but, the second time, adds the words, “Eat and drink or the journey will be long for you,” and we know, that strengthened by that food, Elijah continues on the journey to Mt. Horeb where he will encounter the Lord. Isn’t his story ours, too? We put so much effort into doing what is right, struggling with obstacles, challenging the world around us with our values, only to have discouraging results. We feel like “throwing in the towel,” and can easily become depressed. You see, this is our story today as the Word of God is proclaimed, that Elijah’s, and the remedy, is the same as the Gospel affirms: “Eat and drink or the journey will be long for you.” How many people turn to “food and drink,” which will never relieve the symptoms of our depression and discouragement? We turn to drugs, alcohol, sex, and/or violence, and find ourselves back where we started and maybe worse off for the effort. The Eucharist is “our food for the journey;” it gives us life and fills us with the desire to be renewed. Why are we often so blind to that reality? Peace, Msgr. Paul STEWARDSHIP CORNER Steward of the Month - August, 2012 - CHRISTINA MASTROENI One of our young adults who excels in giving of herself to her parish and the wider community, Christina receives her certificate and pin at the 10:00 Mass this morning.

MARIA SS. ADDOLORATA OFFERING BLANKET Several years ago, we introduced the “Maria SS. Addolorata Offering Blanket” to the Italian Festival. It has proven to be a beautiful acknowledgment of our Sorrowful Mother. A donation on the Offering Blanket brings hope to the ill, is in memory of the deceased, or is offered for a very special intention. On the 2nd Friday of each month, a special Italian Mass in

honor of The Devotees of Maria Santissima Addolorata is offered for their intentions at 7:00 P.M. During the festival, the blanket will be on display in our Italian Café for the entire 4 days. The presentation of the blanket will take place on Saturday evening, during the candlelight procession following the 7:00 PM Mass. If you wish to take part in the Offering Blanket, you may submit your donation to Holy Family Church along with the intention you wish for the blanket. Kindly make your check payable to Holy Family Church, but mark the envelope MEMORIAL BLANKET. As always, the blanket will be a magnificent tribute to Our Lady of Sorrows. For more information, please call Gina Tamburri at 973-751-4187.

STAND AND BE COUNTED: NEW MEMBERS WELCOME

Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and a commitment to the life of the parish family. To so clearly state your Catholic commitment in all its dimensions brings you advantages, recognition, and responsibilities of many kinds. Being a registered parishioner makes

things much easier when it is time for infant baptism, school registration, weddings, when asked to be a baptismal or confirmation sponsor, and even funerals. We are often asked to provide affidavits for baptismal and confirmation sponsors. We can only do this if a person is a registered, active, and contributing member in our parish. How do you know if you are already registered? A registered parishioner receives all parish mailings. Most recently, a newly revised census form was sent with the summer newsletter and upcoming raffles. We ask that you complete that form — or complete it on the web: www.holyfamilynutley.org — as soon as you have the opportunity.

Have You Seen Our New Website? Mike Ramos has done a really great job reworking the website and putting it out there on Facebook. Please take a few minutes to view. Visit: www.holyfamilynutley.org. If you’d like to drop Mike a line, his email is: [email protected].

MORE FESTIVAL NEWS! SUPER 50/50 RAFFLE UPDATE

Please do the best you can to sell the September Super 50/50 tickets - - it will enhance our jackpot! To date, there is over $3,000 in our jackpot! The more tickets we sell, the richer the prize. If you do not plan on using the Super 50/50 raffle book, kindly drop it in the collection basket and we will use the book at the Feast. Thanks!

The arches that decorate the entrances to our Festival are beautiful - and they are costly! If anyone would consider underwriting the cost of the arches or making a donation toward them, we would be most grateful! Please call Lynn at the rectory for any questions you may have regarding this.

Another expense we need to cover is that of the Italian Marching Band. The band lends an atmosphere of old-world charm to the feast. Anyone who would like to underwrite or donate toward the cost of the band is asked to call the rectory and speak with our secretary, Lynn.

A REMINDER ABOUT APPROPRIATE SUMMER ATTIRE

AT MASS Dressing for Mass is simply a matter of showing proper respect, not only for God, but for others around you. Remember the days when we wore our “Sunday best,” our finest outfits, to Mass? Dress codes at Mass have certainly relaxed over the years. With the warm weather upon us, it is particularly important that we dress appropriately and modestly for Mass, so here are some rules to follow for modest and proper Mass attire during the summer months: ❀ Hemlines on dresses and skirts fall at or just above the knee ❀ Hemlines on shorts fall near the knee (no short-shorts) ❀ Shoulders and midriffs are covered ❀ Necklines are modest - not low-cut ❀ No beachwear - swimsuits with cover-ups for females, swim trunks for males ❀ No muscle tee-shirts ❀ No exposed undergarments

The Holy Family food pantry is seriously in need of stocking. After a recent inventory of the pantry, the following is what is desperately needed: Breakfast Foods: Pancake Mix, Syrup, Hot & Cold Cereals; Condiments: Sugar, Powdered Milk or Creamer (Parmalat, too!), Salt & Pepper, Bottled Herbs & Seasonings,

Salad Dressings, Mustard, Ketchup/Mayo, Oil, Vinegar; Canned Foods: Fruits, Fish, Meat, Ham, Poultry, Stews, Chef Boyardee, Juice, Crushed, Stewed, etc., Tomatoes; Kids Favorites: We have no “snacks” for the kids - Peanut Butter, Jelly, Crackers (for the PB&J), Cookies, Chips, Pretzels, Microwave Popcorn, Beverages, Juice Boxes. Baking Supplies: Flour, Icing, Pie Filling; Cake Mix. We are also in need of Coffee, Tea and Hot Cocoa; Baby formula, foods & diapers; and dried beans: split pea, lentils, cannellini, kidney, etc., white & brown rice. Any non-perishable, unopened, not expired food you have to donate, we will be happy to take!

Living the Christian Life Through the Power of the Holy Spirit – IHA

August 17-19 The NJ Catholic Charismatic Renewal Conference Committee (NJCCRC) is offering you a special opportunity to discover, understand, celebrate and experience God’s presence and power already within you. The NJCCRC is sponsoring The Charism School & Miracle Healing Service with Damian Stayne at Immaculate Heart Academy High School, 500 Van Emburgh Avenue, in the Township of Washington, Friday evening through Sunday afternoon, August 17-19. On Pentecost, Jesus established His Church through His Apostles and disciples. He poured out His Holy Spirit upon them to continue His work and ministry in the world then and now. At your baptism, you received the Holy Spirit, including all the gifts necessary to live as a Catholic Christian today, to share the Gospel message to people throughout our world, in your community, and to members of your own family. To register, and for complete information about the Charism School with Damian Stayne, please visit our website at www.njccrc.org or call Viola at 201-666-5697

NOMINATION FOR STEWARD OF THE MONTH

When deciding to nominate a person for the Steward of the Month Award, we should consider the following: The TIME that this person dedicates to parish activities, community events, personal time with others

in need of assistance, spiritual aid and/or companionship. The TALENT that this person offers to the parish and community, willingly and lovingly. The TREASURE this person offers to the parish and community. Has he or she accepted the divine call to extend God’s blessings on those less fortunate through personal sacrificial giving? These are important factors to consider when proposing a person for nomination. Often a prayer to the Holy Spirit is helpful, too, in discerning the name for nomination. Please fill out the nomination form and return it in an envelope marked “Stewardship Committee” to nominate a parishioner as Steward of the Month. ✄-------------------------------------------------------------------------
