MISSION STATEMENT Holy Family Catholic Church is a spiritually and socially active parish. Rooted in the Word of God and nourished by the Eucharist, we cele-brate the life of our Lord Jesus Christ by proclaiming the Good News and providing spiritual growth, support and service with love. Founded by Italian immigrants a century ago, today our parish continues the tradition of extending a loving, caring and affirming welcome to all who join us as we Continue Our Journey of Faith.

19th Sunday in Ordinary Time C-2019 My brothers and sisters in the Lord! In today’s scriptures Jesus instructs His disciples that, while God the Father has fulfilled His promises by giving them the kingdom, they still must have the right attitude, that is: faith to keep going and not to get bogged down by the materialistic things in this world. Rather, they must always focus on the everlasting treasure of heaven. He gives them the example of a faithful servant who is

always at his duties while waiting for his master’s return. We might wonder what it means to walk by faith in today’s world. If the example of our ancestors in faith is anything to go by, we are in a similar situation. St Luke is writing his Gospel for a community of new Christians who are expecting the return of Jesus at any time. But it hasn’t happened yet and their natural tendency is to fall back into the well-established patterns of behavior. When we expect something to happen imminently, it tends to sharpen our focus, whereas the routine of everyday encourages us into taking things more easily. If we had a more pressing sense of the Lord’s return, wouldn’t we be more fervent in our prayer, in our response to our duties, more sensitive of the needs of the world around us? But, as it is, many of us do just as much as we feel nec-essary to keep us in touch with God and the Church. We respond to the various appeals for our charity with an ever-increasing sense of detachment and, little by little, we find our life filling up with things that we think are more important or interesting than a rela-tionship with a God who seems to us more and more distant from our daily experience of life. The challenge of Jesus today reminds us of this ever-present tendency to let our faith drift. We have been entrusted with the great treasure of our faith. It is not simply a personal gift for us to take or leave. It brings with it a responsibility for the generations that follow us. In today’s scripture passage, because Abraham believed, God was able to establish his family of faith. Because of people like Moses and the prophets, this faith prepared for the coming of Christ. Because of the faith of the disciples, we have been able to receive the Good News, the Sacraments, as well as the promise of eternal life. My brothers and sisters, now is our turn not only to receive but to share what we have received, and we do this first of all by living a life of love and service with and for others. Upon reflecting upon these things, we might ask ourselves, are we dressed and ready for action, or are we just waiting for the storms of this life to surprise and overwhelm us? Thursday, August 15th we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Mary stands for all of us. Not so much because she is an extra ordinary human being but because human beings are extra ordinary: loved and trusted by God. The Mary of the Magnificat and the Assumption glories God’s power, overturning all signs of toxic and death dealing power within so-ciety. Mary’s questions, as well as her challenges, are ours. Her song can be our song, exulting in a God who enters fully into all that is fragile and earthly in human experience, into the blood and guts of human bodies but also into our beauty and capacity to respond in love. Like Mary, we are blessed when we learn to hear the Word of God and keep it, both in body and soul. Peace, Fr. Joe

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE “For where your treasure is,

there also will your heart be.” (Luke 12:34) Jesus encourages us to build up our treasure in heaven. The world encourages us to build up our treasure in real estate, investments, and material goods. How much time are you investing in building up a worldly treasure? How much time are you investing in building up a heavenly treasure? To invest more time in the things of heaven, you must let go of some of the things of this world. For Sunday, August 4, 2019 The actual collection was $8,902.00, $2,060.00 of which came from ParishGiving. The 2nd Collection for the Monthly Archdiocesan Assessment was $2,277. Mass Attendance was 968. God Bless You for your generosity!

For Sunday, August 5, 2018 The actual collection was $9,001.00;

$1,708.00 of which came from ParishGiving. The 2nd Collection for Archdiocesan Assessment

was $2,791.00; $502.00 of which came from ParishGiving. Mass Attendance was 1,060.

If you have not yet signed up for Parish Giving, why not sign up and give it a try. It is far more convenient than going to the

ATM and having only $20 bills in your pocket. Simply go to our parish website (www.holyfamilynutley.org) and click on the link to ParishGiving. You can then establish your account and set up your annual donations in a matter of minutes. And that’s it - - you’re good to go! This is especially convenient for those who have children in our school and CCD programs. You are then easily able to establish that you are an active, participating parishioner of our Church.

From JoAnn Trezza: “I have been in the choir for 62 year; this is my ministry. As I sing the hymns, I feel it in my soul; it is my passion singing praises to God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, Blessed Mother Mary and all the Saints - it is so fulfilling to me. It is important to be part of the liturgy of the

Mass. Parishioners have told choir members that they feel uplifted and we bring people into their space of prayer.” He who sings, prays twice, so come join the Holy Family Choir.

The Rosary Altar Society is sponsoring a “Grab & Go Breakfast” on Sunday, September 8th. The women will be hosting the “Sock Drop” at that time with socks to be donated to the homeless. The Society’s annual Communion breakfast is Sunday, October 6, immediately following the 8:00 AM Mass.

More information on both events will be coming soon!
