Wednesday 3rd April Newsletter Term 1 Week 10
Rule of the Week Week 9: Wear school uniform
Week 10: Be honest
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
This will be the last newsletter for this term.
Thank you for supporting your children during the first term. Everyone has had a positive start to the new
year.
School finishes on Friday April 12 and resumes on Tuesday 30 April for all students.
SAFE RESPECTFUL LEARNERS ACHIEVING GREAT LEARNING
It has been wonderful to have students show me their learning and so pleasing to see them in the classroom
engaged in their learning tasks. I have noticed the variety of ways that technology is integrated into daily
classroom activities to support literacy and numeracy.
At Holsworthy Public School we believe that all students should be given the opportunity to learn and
grow in a safe, happy environment. This environment is created and maintained by setting clear rules,
routines and expectations and giving appropriate reinforcement for positive behaviour to aid
understanding and adherence to the rules.
Throughout our school, you will see signs in both classrooms and outdoor areas. The focus of these signs
are our school values which are Being Safe, Being Respectful and Being A Learner.
It is our priority that students are happy and engaged learners. Strategies to overcome bullying are taught
to all students at our school. Students and parents are encouraged to inform staff members of any
behaviour that is repetitious and sustained in order to keep all of our students safe and happy each and
every day.
P&C NEWS
The P&C is a wonderful, supportive group of parents who strongly advocate for other parents and their
children and who provide funds to support our students and our wonderful school. All positions were filled
except the role of President and treasury. We thank those who have either returned or taken on a new
position. We, as a staff, understand how busy everyone is, and greatly appreciate those who give us their
time. We meet the first Monday of every month in the staffroom. It is an opportunity where you can meet
new parents and put forth ideas, either your own or that of others. We are asking if you, or anyone you
know, would like to take on the role of President or treasurer for the remainder of the year? It involves being
present at the meetings and running the agenda sent out. Without a President, our P&C cannot continue,
so please take time to think about it. You will have a really great team around you. Please contact Ms Deiri
if you are interested.
ELECTION BBQ I would like to thank the P&C and those who donated precious time to help out on election day. We had parents and students help out on the day. Funds were raised go towards a wish-list for our students. This was a perfect example of community working together for the benefit of their children. AFTER SCHOOL
Many students are staying in the playground after school has finished and are either down on the play
equipment or unsupervised. A reminder that when the bell goes it is time to leave the school and go home
to enjoy your afternoon together. Playing handball or playing on the equipment when there is no supervision
is a safety issue for us so we would greatly appreciate your co-operation in this matter.
MEDICATION REMINDER
Please remember that the school is unable to administer any medication that is not prescribed by a doctor.
If your child requires prescription medication please see the office staff to complete the appropriate forms.
Parents have a responsibility to:
ensure a sufficient supply of up to date medication and any ‘consumables’ necessary for its administration are available,
provide the school with any up to date medical information from treating doctors or other relevant health care practitioners and
inform the school of any changes to the health care needs of their children as those changes occur.
SAFE PARKING
Parents/carers – please remember your responsibility to model SAFE behaviour for all road safety. Students
are being dropped off and picked up in bus zones and doing 3-point turns next to the crossing – which will
incur a fine.– but more importantly it is dangerous to students and other vehicles. There is no onsite parking
for parents and I realise that this means extra cars needing parking in the adjacent streets, but I would ask
that we keep student safety in the forefront of our driving decisions.

make/create a hat that represents them and their interests. Themes can
include Easter, action heroes, movies, sports and princess. All students
in K-2 will have a chance to wear and model their creations for the other
students on the day of the parade.
When: Thursday 11 April 2019
Time: 10:00am— 10:55am
Where: Year One and Two playground area
Parents, grandparents and friends are welcome to share this special occasion.
After the parade the P&C will be selling Hot Cross buns, coffee and tea on KB’s veranda.

READING AND COMPREHENSION TIPS
To help your child become a more effective reader suggest some of these strategies.
Predicting – use information from the text, images or your own experience to try and predict what might happen next, how characters might react or what the outcome will be.
Questioning – ask and answer questions about the text to help children understand the meaning of the text.
Monitoring – if something doesn’t make sense as you read it, stop, reread and think or discuss what you’ve read to understand the meaning.
Visualising – it can help to paint a picture in our head of things being described or explained in a text – it helps bring the text to life.
Making connections – compare what you are reading to: o something in your own life o another text you have read or watched o something happening in the world.
Summarising – notice the most important things in the text and use your own words to describe what you have read.
WRITING TIPS
All writing has a purpose. Make sure your child is thinking about who they are writing for and why. For example, there’s a difference between writing a letter to a family member when on a holiday and a tourism brochure or story or film set in the same location.
Read your child’s writing or get them to read it to you. Praise them for having a go at writing words that are new to them.
Encourage writing at home by:
ask your child to keep a diary of special events such as a diary or blog have you child label photos or pictures with captions make notes, letters and stories regularly

Paper & Equipment Levy for 2019
Dear Parent / Caregiver
I am writing to request payment of the Paper & Equipment Levy for 2019. Below I have explained what the
funds raised by the payment of this fee provide and thereby illustrate how vital these funds are in the
provision of a high quality education for the students at Holsworthy Public School.
Some of the student requirements paid for by these fees are:
Mathletics: This is an excellent on-line Maths program which our students enjoy and learn from. It provides high quality supplementation of our teaching programs. Students can also access this highly educational resource at home. The school and P&C pays an annual licence fee per student to the provider. Most schools using this valuable program require parents to pay for the annual subscription.
Photocopying cost: We do not use text books other than handwriting and spelling books at HPS. Therefore the copying costs are very high. Other schools use text books which have to be purchased by parents at considerable cost.
Arts & Craft materials: These are high cost items which are rapidly used. However, these items are essential in order to provide a well-rounded education for our students.
Sport / PE Equipment: Also high cost items which wear out with use and have to be replaced regularly.
Library Books & Computer Reference System: This allows our students to access top quality research material. This also requires payment of an annual subscription cost per student.
I trust you can see the essential nature of the requirements above. They assist us in providing high quality
education to your children.
The levy for 2019 is $40 per student or $80 per family (if you have two or more children attending the school).
Please complete the slip below with your child/ren’s name/s and class/s and send it with the money in a
clearly marked envelope to your child’s class teacher or alternatively pay at the office.
Please contact the office if you have already paid the fees this year.
Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.
Sincerely yours
Tammy Deiri (Relieving Principal)

HELPING WITH MATHS AND NUMERACY
Maths today is about understanding number patterns, not learning by rote. Consider the following when helping your child with maths.
Stay positive. Don’t say, ‘I was bad at maths too’. It can lower your child’s expectations of themselves.
Don’t jump in and tell your child the answer or how to get to the answer. Ask: ‘What is the question asking you?’ or ‘How should we go about working this out?’
Practise times tables. Children who know their times tables are more confident with their numbers and maths in general.
There is always more than one way to get the right answer. Children are encouraged to work things out in more than one way, as a way to check their answer.
Talk to the teacher if your child needs more help with their homework.
