NAIDOC Week This week schools have celebrated NAIDOC Week a little earlier as the official week falls in our school holidays. This year the theme is Heal Country. On Tuesday, our Aboriginal students combined with students from Hammondville PS and Wattle Grove PS and attended Holsworthy HS where the high school students ran a number of engaging activities which involved art, cooking and sport. On Friday, the classes will be engaged in a variety of activities and students are permitted to wear mufti (casual clothing but enclosed shoes must still be worn). Education Week Education Week will be held from 26-30 July (Week 3) and this year’s theme celebrates lifelong learners. Our school Open Day will be held on Wednesday 28 July – parents will be able to view students performing (such as our dance groups), as well as visit the classrooms. Details will be provided in Term 3 but we are looking at the middle session (11:15-1:05pm). Parents will also be able to attend the Student Parliament (run by our ministers) on Monday 2 August commencing at 2:00pm. On Time, Every Time Attendance at school is very important and children should be at school unless they are unwell. This also applies to arriving at school prior to the bell at 8:55am. Being late 5 minutes each day equates to missing three whole days of school over the year. If you can hear the music playing, this means you have less than 3 minutes before the bell. Having an opportunity to socialise prior to entering the classroom is important for most students and the beginning of the day is spent setting up the structures for the remainder of the day.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Last week Year 6 spent three days in Canberra exploring the sites as well as gaining an insight into the way our government operates. The students were able to observe question time in the House of Representatives and compare it to our own student parliament. I was able to join the students and was proud of their behaviour. In the previous fortnight the student Semester 1 reports have been distributed and most of the parent/teacher interviews have been held. There has been a combination of face-to-face and phone interviews, with face-to-face being more popular. NAIDOC Week This week schools have celebrated NAIDOC Week a little earlier as the official week falls in our

school holidays.

Coloured Paper Notes From next term all notes that have to be returned to the school will be printed on light blue paper. This will serve as a reminder that this note needs to be returned to the school – if you see a blue note, the expectation is that it will come back to school as it will usually involve parents giving permission for a particular event. School Photos We have been informed by The School Photographer that the class and individual photos ordered by parents will be delivered in the first week of Term 3. I apologise for the delay. Changes to Entry Gates After the holidays, our new automated gates in Infantry Parade should be operational. This will mean that access via the pedestrian gate will be by speaking into a microphone before the gate will open. The same process will be required to exit through the gate. The main carpark gate will also be automated. It will be open prior to school (6:30-8:30am) and after school (from 3:15pm) for parents who need to access the before and after school facility. Access at other times is restricted. This gate will automatically open when exiting. The Huon Crescent gate will be closed at 9:05am each day and will reopen shortly before school finishes at 2:55pm. These new gates will assist in ensuring the school remains a safe place. School Holidays and School Development Day Just a reminder the school holidays commence on Monday 28 June and finish on Friday 9 July. Monday 12 July is a School Development Day and set aside for the teachers to engage in professional learning. The students return on Tuesday 13 July. At the end of this newsletter, a calendar of the Term 3 events has been included. Mark Hoppitt Principal

DEBATING NEWS Round 2 of the Premier’s Debating Challenge is now complete and our debaters did a fantastic job! Holsworthy ‘Titans’ competed against Warwick Farm Public School to convince the audience that primary schools must never use electronic devices for teaching and they won their debate. Holsworthy ‘Rookies’ debated against Newbridge Heights to convince the audience that parents should limit kids screen time to two days a week. Unfortunately, they lost this debate. We wish our debaters success in Round 3. Miss Grayson and Mrs Hatzitanos YEAR 5 CAMP INFORMATION Year 5 will attend a three-day excursion to Canberra on Monday 9 August to Wednesday 11 August 2021 (Term 3 Week 5). This excursion supports our unit of work on Australia as a Nation with a focus on the development of democracy in Australia and our system of government. The children will be engaged in a range of activities to enhance their understanding of government and democracy. Attractions in Canberra include:

• Australian Federal Parliament – educational program and guided tour • Australian Institute of Sport – educational program and guided tour • Museum of Democracy – educational program • Electoral Commission – educational program • Questacon – interactive tour • Botanical Gardens – tour • National Arboretum – interactive tour • Corin Forest – snow play • Australian War Memorial – educational program • National Zoo and Aquarium – guided tour

The cost of the camp is $350.00. This includes transport, accommodation, all meals (except for recess and lunch on the first day), hire of clothing for snow play and all activities.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion, the Australian Government contributes funding of $30 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion (this rebate has already been applied to families in the final cost of the camp). CANTEEN Students who play PSSA and who have a lunch order on a Friday please assist the canteen by writing PSSA on the lunch order. This will ensure that the lunch order is ready before the students leave for sport.

The medical and consent form must be completed and returned with either the full amount or a deposit of $50.00 by tomorrow (Thursday 24 June).

Final payment must be made by Wednesday 28 July (Term 3 Week 3).

YEAR 6 CAMP Last week, our Year 6 students and teachers spent three days away on a tour of the national capital, Canberra. Students had an extremely busy three days with the opportunity to visit a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. On day one of the camp, following a very early departure, we visited the Museum of Australian Democracy (located at Old Parliament House) and learned about the early origins of democracy in Australia. We also attended the Electoral Education Centre where students participated in a mock election to learn about our preferential voting system and how voting has changed over time. The students then visited the Royal Australian Mint to learn about the history of money and its production and saw the robots at work minting new coins. We spent the first afternoon completing a tour of Parliament House, seeing Question Time in action and completing an educational program with a role play of debating and passing a bill. Day two began with an interactive experience at the Australian Institute of Sport with students testing their skills, fitness and agility in a variety of simulated sport environments. We then headed to the National Arboretum to see how Canberra is creating a living museum of trees. The students also got to play in their giant outdoor playground. Then it was time for the most-anticipated activity of the whole excursion: snow play at Corin Forest. The students had a blast throwing snowballs and playing in the snow. We then had a late afternoon tour of the dinosaur museum to learn about the giants of our past. Our bus groups separated on day three and across the course of the day students attended the Australian War Memorial to participate in a guided tour, learning about some of the many thousands of stories of our nation’s history in war. They also toured the National Zoo and Aquarium and saw a great number of creatures up close before heading on the long bus ride home. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion, the Australian Government contributed funding of $30 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion (this rebate has already been applied to families in the final cost of the camp). Our students are to be congratulated for their outstanding behaviour throughout the camp and we know that this is an experience that will stay with them for many years to come.
