Hennerton Golf Club is set in the heart of the countryside just outside Wargrave in

berkshire. the club is within 15 minutes easy driving distance from reading, Maidenhead and Henley-on-thames. Within 15 minutes you can be in an oasis of calm, surrounded by the tranquillity of nature and away from the hustle of everyday life.

Celebrating its 20th year since being opened by bernard Gallacher in 1992, Hennerton is an established club with a relaxed and friendly membership complementing a unique and

beautiful 18-hole parkland course with spectacular views stretching for miles in every direction over the thames Valley, Chilterns and berkshire Downs.

the course is unique in many ways: the nature of the course allows you to finish a round in under 4 hours and the layout provides great variety with from terraced tees and contoured greens. each fairway is markedly different from characteristically narrow to wide, to short and undulating. our course relies on strategy and will challenge all abilities of golfer, and one which you will want to return to again and again.

the club is used throughout the community for all events. our meeting room is a discreet venue for presentations and networking. our clubhouse is the perfect venue for all of life’s celebrations from finger buffets to formal dinners. the clubhouse dining room and patio are perfect spots for enjoying our delicious home-made food whilst looking back over the panoramic views.

everyone is welcome to use the club - its practice facilities beat many around as one of the only places with a covered driving range perfect for any changeable weather.

6 Hennerton Golf Club

the signature 16th hole


on 3rd october, 1992, Hennerton Golf Club was opened by the then ryder Cup Captain,

bernard Gallacher and began it’s life as a nine-hole course.

the original 9-hole course was designed by Colonel Dion beard, a former secretary of Wentworth, who was also involved in the design of Sandford Springs. Hennerton was privileged to have him as Honorary Chairman of the club until his retirement in 1999.

Gallacher, even as a ryder Cup stalwart (eight appearances as a player and three as a non-playing captain), was delighted with the beauty of the countryside and the advantages made of the natural variation of the hills and the valley in the design of the course.

After years of planning the next phase, in 2006 the course was reopened with the current 18 holes. the later nine holes, forming the second to the tenth hole, were designed by international architects Gaunt & Marnoch. their design focused on being sympathetic to the surrounding ancient woodland and protecting the natural habitat of this beautiful valley.

After the wide sweeping dog-leg of the first hole, the start of the new part of the course from

the 2nd hole embodies all that is unique about Hennerton - a challenging layout embedded within this beautiful surrounding environment. the 2nd was built with conservation in mind and to protect the great crested newt in the ponds. Its seemingly easy-going layout is riddled with hazards - the mounds to the right, bunkers to the left and the lateral water defending the front of the undulating green.

All the holes have been carved artistically within the landscape, the 6th finishes above the tee with its green carved out of the chalk; the 8th finishes by being framed beautifully within a corner of the protected woodland. from the terraced tees of the 5th and 7th holes you find a wonderful surveying point of the countryside as the holes drop into the valley below.

on to the back nine, the course opens up again to provide some longer holes and the opportunity to use the driver. the signature hole (pictured) is the 16th - 183 yards and a par 3 - that crosses a short but deep valley finishing on a raised green from which you can view the neighbouring town of Henley in the distance. this hole gives the player a mighty satisfaction of landing on the green in one, easily done if one ignores the valley inbetween.

the course finishes with some beautiful play on the 17th and 18th with wide fairways that reward the careful player with gentle undulations, framed by spectacular backdrops.

overall, Hennerton asks the player to focus on accuracy and to make one concentrate on improving your short game. Here both course management and knowledge are paramount - the hidden hazards, contoured land and the greens are full of deceptive little breaks and borrows.

It is not just the challenging play that adds to the enjoyment of the course, it is also the added appeal of being close to nature - playing amongst the resident moorhens and mallards on the ponds; catching a glimpse of the elusive jays and green woodpeckers around the 1st and 2nd or the shy muntjac and fallow deer from the woodland near the 3rd or 8th and the powerful red kites that whirl above the 18th and 16th.

Play the course in the early morning as the mist rises off the pond by the second tee or late in the day as the sun begins to sink behind the hills and you will appreciate why this is designated an area of outstanding natural beauty.

the Head Professional and Golf Manager, Glenn Johnson, has been at Hennerton since 1993

having started his golfing career in 1991 at Drayton Park Golf Club.

Glenn is assisted by Warren Harris, who joined the club in April 2010 after being at Downshire Golf Complex and previously at bearwood Golf Club as a school leaver in 2002.

both Glenn and Warren offer lessons 7 days a week and operate within the accreditations of the Professional Golf Association, GolfMark and Golf foundation.

located in the clubhouse, the Pro-shop is the heart of the club and warmly welcomes all players and visitors. As well as offering advice and their expertise, the professionals have a well-stocked shop with everything necessary for play: from balls and tees, to shoes, clothing, golf bags and putters.

Individual and group lessons are available seven days a week with our PGA-Professional Glenn

Johnson and his PGA Assistant Warren Harris. each lesson is adapted to each player’s ability or wish to focus on any particular aspect of concern. lessons are held in the covered driving range or practice green, or you may have the entire course at your disposal for a more in-depth lesson on strategy of play. on-course lessons focus on course strategy and to course management skills. It also gives you the opportunity of benefiting from a professional’s mindset, and may change your perspective on how to approach a round of golf.

Discounts are given for a block booking of lessons and may be individual or an opportunity to learn with a friend. the Professionals also provide group classes for beginners or improvers throughout the year.

Glenn and his assistant Warren are committed to establishing golf roots and furthering the sport. Warren gives junior group lessons every weekend and holds junior golf camps during school holidays. these are perfect for children from the age of 5 who are interested in taking up this fast growing sport.

the Professionals also provide a junior golf scholarship programme for the local schools as well

as hold tri-golf days at schools as part of the Golf foundation scheme.

Hennerton is proud to have achieved the GolfMark accreditation. the Club is recognised by Sport england and the english Golf union as following best practice in the organisation of our Junior Golf programme.

open until 10pm daily.

our covered and flood-lit seven-bay driving range is good for those wishing to warm-up before their round and also as a place to unwind after a long day.

the putting green is set by the clubhouse and mirrors the true surfaces found on the course.

Please note that there is no dress code when using the practice areas, but we would advise wearing sports shoes.

You will find a warm and friendly welcome at Hennerton with a good balance of monthly club competitions and social golf, as well as plenty of time when the course is free for those who just want to play with friends.

our members have the benefit of playing at the following clubs for free:

Membership at Hennerton concentrates on giving value for money:

• full membership with 7-day and 5-day options• Associate: an economical option with reduced pay & play green fees for infrequent players• Service Personnel: for retired and current members of the forces• Corporate membership provides a flexible and affordable package• 6 month: for those away from the area for at least half the year

• Country: for those joining Hennerton as their away club• Intermediate membership for 23-30 year olds• Student membership for 19-22 year olds• Junior membership for 10-18 year olds - younger applicants are considered after an assessment with the Pro • Social membership for those wishing to use our clubhouse facilities at discounted rates.

our golf year runs from May 1 until April 30 and a pro-rata rate is given for those joining within the year. All current prices may be found on our website.

We offer a joint membership discount for partners living at the same address and free junior membership to children whose parents or grandparents are members at Hennerton.

for those uncertain as to whether club membership is right for them, we offer a three-month trial membership at an advantageous rate and without obligation.

new members are welcomed and swiftly integrated into the many golf socials and

competitions. the golf year is run by the members and a small committee is formed annually to organise the calendar of events with club managers.

Hennerton’s membership is unique in making sure the different golf sectors are integrated as much as possible. ladies, Men, Juniors and Seniors are encouraged to play within the same competitions where appropriate.

Qualifying competitions are played three times a month allowing you to focus on your handicap. We also have monthly socials competitions and regular roll-ups to allow each section of the membership to mix together.

the roll-ups are organised by the seniors on weekday mornings, the ladies on tuesday mornings and on weekends the Saturday morning roll-up is a very popular opportunity to make new golf partners. During the summer months a Wednesday evening roll-up is organised with nine holes played in a variety of formats followed by a meal or barbecue.

Playing Sections and Competitions Continued

All sectors have interclub matches during the summer months, a great occasion to play at other clubs. We also enter national qualifiers and regional leagues with the ladies being active within the berkshire County ladies Golf Association and the Men with the berks, bucks & oxon union of Golf Clubs.

the Juniors, organised by Warren Harris, have their own order of merit, monthly medals and interclub matches and boarded competitions as well as the benefit of using the driving range for free.

throughout the year there are a number of club competitions offering the chance for silverware and the opportunity to have one’s name added to the club’s honours boards. these include Hennerton’s oldest competition, the Hearn Cup, and the pinnacle event of the year, the Club Championship - a 36-hole scratch competition, played for by men and ladies on a single day in June.

Societies return to Hennerton year after year. We offer Society Packages for a minimum of

10 players. Choose from our reasonably priced packages or create a day to suit your group.

We have many different catering options such as full breakfasts before you go out to lunches or dinners after play: running buffets, barbecues to 3-course sit-down dinner for your prize presentation. It all depends on your budget.

After a round of golf there are few better places to be than in the clubhouse spike bar or on

the terrace surveying the panoramic views of the course and valley stretching out to the berkshire Downs.

the clubhouse is open from 7am and closes when the last golfer leaves in the evening. the restaurant opens from 8am for breakfasts and lunches, all freshly home-made.
