Commonly known as Cobble Hall, Leeds Golf Club is home to an 18-hole parkland course situated on the north side of Leeds and is regarded as one of the finest clubs in the whole of Yorkshire.

founded in 1896 it is the original home of the leeds cup, the oldest trophy in professional golf, holders of which range from harry Vardon to howard clark.

Set in approximately 110 acres, our stunning course tests golfers of all ages and abilities. Measuring 6,115 yards from the white championship tees, the par of 69 is rarely beaten even in scratch competitions. Only four miles from the city centre and close to the leeds ring road, the course has a distinctly tranquil and rural feel with many of the holes commanding spectacular views of roundhay.

leeds Golf club offers something for everyone - men, women, seniors and juniors, from experienced players to those who have never picked up a golf club before. We also welcome corporate members and golf societies who wish to visit our wonderful course and make use of the excellent clubhouse facilities.

We have a relatively low number of full members compared to other courses which enables you to play at your time of choice on most days. if you like your rounds of golf to be both challenging and exhilarating and your welcome to be warm, sincere and one which will make you instantly feel at home, then leeds Golf club is for you.

A Warm Welcome

Menleeds Golf club are members of the Yorkshire Golf union and enter the county’s divisional team championships. This is a very competitive event which runs from april to September and features seven divisions, with promotion and relegation. Primarily for scratch players, it features some very high quality golf, underlining the strength in depth of golfing talent to be found in Yorkshire.

Not only does playing in this sort of company allow a golfer to discover how his own game performs under the pressure of competition, it affords the chance to visit some of the county’s other outstanding courses. Our club has some very good golfers, some of whom have been picked to represent leeds and District and Yorkshire.

More locally, the leeds and District union of Golf clubs enjoy their own league competition which is no less competitive. There is a Monday night scratch league in the golf season with a match home or away most weeks. There is also a league for the nett players where handicap is taken into account (also Mondays) and a league for juniors (up to age of 18), which takes place on a Tuesday.

Members may put their names down for consideration for captain’s team matches, which are played both home and away against other clubs in Yorkshire.at club level, there are weekly competitions every Saturday and Sunday, either individual or team events, some of which are qualifiers for further honours board events.

Most Saturdays or Sundays see either a monthly medal or stableford being played and there are other popular events featuring a variety of formats such as four-ball better-ball, three-man team competitions and Texas Scrambles.

There are also around 15 honours board competitions, the most prized of which is probably the club championship, a scratch event which takes place over 36 holes over a weekend.

The currer briggs is arguably one of the most popular competitions, featuring golfers of all abilities. everyone can enter this knockout event, which begins in March and finally produces a winner in September.

Rabbits Section

Not everyone can aspire to shooting in the 70s on a regular basis and for those with a handicap of 16 and above leeds has the rabbits, a friendly section whose members play golf more for the enjoyment than the competition. having said that, there is a great deal of competitive golf on offer for those that want it, such as participation in the fowler Trophy for teams of two played against other Yorkshire clubs.

The Two Man league, organised by the leeds and District rabbits’ association, features home and away matches and there are three other Sunday district-organised events, the Tom howard Memorial Trophy, the Team championship and the Pinder Trophy which are all decided on the day as well as the Taylor Trophy, a knockout competition played throughout the season.

Within the club, the rabbits have their own Spring cup and rabbits Prize Day competitions which are played on Saturday, while the rabbits championship is played over 36 holes on a Saturday and Sunday.

There are six home and away friendlies over the year (featuring four-ball better-ball play for teams of 12). harrogate and horsforth provide opposition every year, while every second year we play eight other clubs with which we have a close association.

The rabbits have their own committee, own captain and a lively social section featuring events such as the rabbits Dinner and Dance. each year there is also a captain’s away day to a different club.

LadiesThe ladies section at leeds represent the club in a host of competitions including the county foursomes and the coronation foursomes.

They also play in leeds Golf alliance winter competitions, four one-day events held in October, November, february and March.

league play is also popular, with an a and a b team entered in the Yorkshire league and a team competing in the 10-club leeds evening league, which features a nine-hole competition starting at 6pm.

Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays are competition days. There are the traditional monthly medals and stablefords, including two nine-hole qualifying stablefords during the month.

among the most prestigious of the several honours board competitions available to enter is the armitage Trophy, a knockout competition that has been going for many years and which is open to everyone. The Porton Salver features a medal event, with the top eight then qualifying for a knockout, while the laycock Trophy sees four medals played throughout the summer months, with the best three scores out of four to count.

We take great pride in our junior golfers at Leeds Golf Club and do everything we can to encourage them, both to realise their potential and be as good as they possibly can, but at the same time fostering a relaxed atmosphere which ensures they also get maximum enjoyment from a game we all love.

usually every other week there is some competition for the juniors to play on either a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. There are half a dozen silverware competitions and an end-of-season presentation night is held for them at the club.

The youngsters are given a taste for competitive golf early, as leeds fields a team in the leeds and District league, which features matches on a Tuesday evening from May through to august. There are some very good junior players at the club. if they show promise, youngsters can be selected to represent the club in men’s competitions and will also be put forward for coaching both at county and leeds and District level.

Interwoven in the history of the Leeds Golf Club is the story of the beginning of golf in Leeds. It was on the Soldiers Field at Roundhay that the first golf ball was struck in the Leeds district.

in 1890, these players and some others rented the horse pastures which now forms the top nine of the present course of the leeds Golf club, or “cobble hall” as it is more affectionately known locally. They played there until 1893 when they left and fashioned a nine-hole course on the low side of the Wetherby road, forming the roundhay club.

in 1896 several gentlemen met in the Gipton Wood inn and decided to form a golf club. They obtained the original lease of the present course from the local council at a rent of £25 per annum. after some deliberation, they decided to give it the name leeds Golf club. The two clubs at roundhay and leeds were merged in 1900.

The famous golf architect Doctor alastair MacKenzie was a member of leeds Golf club between 1900 and 1910. During that time he gave advice on bunkers and the layout of the course. Doctor MacKenzie has influenced the design of many courses including St. andrews, Prestwick, Troon, alwoodley, Moortown, royal Melbourne and, of course, augusta National. leeds Golf club are active members of the Dr. alastair MacKenzie Society.

in 1909 a substantial new clubhouse was opened, which is now fully modernised to cater for today’s needs. The layout of the course changed in 1928 following the construction of the leeds outer ring road.

Professional golf tournaments are always encouraged and in 1902 the then president of leeds Golf club gave the Professional Golfers association a trophy to be known as The leeds cup, to be played for annually.

in 1938 the club hosted the Yorkshire evening News Trophy for the first time.

Top quality amateur golf has also played a major part with The leeds amateur cup being hosted here since 1912 as well as The cobble hall Scratch since 1962. both are still played for every July and august to this day.

in 2002 the club purchased the lease of the course from the local council, which now allows for the continual update, improvement and ongoing development of the course.

The Leeds Cup was donated to the Northern Region of the Professional Golfers Association to mark their foundation by Mr Penrose Green, the former Lord Mayor of the city, on behalf of the Leeds Golf Club at Cobble Hall, of which he was President.

it was first played for in 1902 and won by the legendary harry Vardon. Very few people at that time would have envisaged that The cup would still be played for to this day, making it the oldest trophy in professional golf.

During its history many famous names have been inscribed as winners including Open champions, harry Vardon, Ted ray, Sandy herd, George Duncan, archie compston and abe Mitchell. Since 1930 ryder cup players, bill Davies, Ted Jarman, Jack busson, John fallon, eric Green, Syd Scott, alex caygill, Gordon J brand and howard clark have also won the trophy.

for many years the leeds cup was open to all-comers but it was decided in the 1930s to restrict entries to regional members of the PGa. Overseas professionals were allowed if competing in the Northern qualifying round of the Match Play championship.

it was on such an occasion at huddersfield in 1955 that 19-year-old Gary Player almost won the tournament on his first visit to britain.

The course, some four miles from the centre of Leeds, has a distinctly rural setting and provides a splendid view from the clubhouse of Waterloo Lake and sylvan beauties of Roundhay Park. Set in mature parkland, it provides golfers of all ages and abilities with a challenging and simply breathtaking round of golf.

There have been several alterations to the original layout, chiefly in the early 1900s by the renowned golf club architect Dr alister Mackenzie. The boundary of the north side is the leeds ring road and it was the construction of this road in 1928 that determined the present layout of the course.

The par of 69 is not often beaten, even in scratch tournaments. Particularly notable holes are the 7th, 14th and the 15th. The 7th, widely regarded as one of the most beautiful in the county, provides a satisfying but testing tee shot from the plateau tee with a second shot to a well-designed and double-tiered green guarded by bunkers and gorse.

Whilst nowadays the Quarry, after which the 14th is named, is not so much in play, nevertheless it remains an excellent par 5 with alternatives of a gamble at “going over” with the second shot or leaving a blind third shot.

Tribulation (the 15th) is well named. a tee shot of 172 yards has to negotiate an avenue of trees not more than 30 yards wide to a green set on a 40-yard high plateau. This is arguably the hole for which the course is most remembered by visiting golfers.

A visit to Leeds Golf Club is something to savour, especially if you have never played our historic course before. We promise you will be in for a treat and to ensure you enjoy your round to the fullest, take a moment to read our course guide with helpful tips from Simon Longster, our Head Professional, to ensure you score well and avoid the pitfalls which lie in wait for the unwary.

Hole 1, 341 yards, par 4a short par 4 with a lateral water hazard running the length of the hole. a drive short of the left-hand fairway bunker leaves a short iron to a large double green.

Hole 2, 391 yards, par 4Testing par 4 with fairway bunkers at 269 yards. aim to drive down the left-hand side which will leave a medium iron to the green. beware of the out of bounds area on the right-hand side and back of the green.

Hole 3, 398 yards, par 4This is a challenging par 4 which requires an accurate drive down the right-hand side to a sloping fairway. a narrow ditch runs across the fairway for the longer hitters. a second shot between the greenside bunkers leaves a good chance for par.

Take the Course Tour

www.leedsgolfclub.co.uk

Page 32: Leeds Golf Club Brochure 2013-14

Leeds Golf Club32

Hole 4, 410 yards, par 4hitting the fairway with your tee shot is a must. aim at the marker post with a right to left flight which will set up a difficult second shot to a small green. This is stroke index 1 for a good reason.

Hole 5, 384 yards, par 4Dogleg right to left par 4 hole. a 3 wood or long iron aimed at the right hand fairway bunker will leave a long second shot to a well-bunkered green.

Hole 6, 126 yards, par 3The shortest hole on the course at 126 yards. avoid a well bunkered green and you’ll be looking at a birdie!

Hole 7, 385 yards, par 4One of the most dramatic holes on the course. aim your tee shot between the fairway bunkers. from there, an accurate second shot should reach the two-tier green.

Hole 8, 406 yards, par 4a long par 4 and the first real chance to open up your shoulders off the tee. an uphill second shot always plays a club longer than you think.

Take the Course Tour continued

Page 33: Leeds Golf Club Brochure 2013-14

Leeds Golf Club 33

Hole 9, 186 yards, par 3a long uphill par 3 with out of bounds beyond the green. avoid the gorse bushes to the left of the green and be proud if you make par.

Hole 10, 455 yards, par 4The longest par 4 on the course and probably the most difficult hole. a tee shot hit down the right-hand side will leave a long second shot to the large green.

Hole 11, 520 yards, par 5a par 5 with out of bounds down the right-hand side to a sloping fairway. The second shot must be aimed down the right as the ball will run to the left upon landing.

Hole 12, 386 yards, par 3The line from the tee is over the left-hand gorse bush to the sloping fairway. a blind second shot with just one bunker at the front right-hand side of the green.

Hole 13, 161 yards, par 3a simple downhill par 3. avoid the bunkers to the front of the green. aim your shot to the right half of the green.

Hole 14, 500 yards, par 5a lovely par 5. The right of the fairway is the best but be careful not to run into the rough. a good lay-up aimed at the fairway bunker will leave a simple shot at the marker post at the rear of the green. Please remember to use the warning bells which are in place to indicate to those playing behind that it is safe to proceed.

Hole 15, 172 yards, par 3Named Tribulation for a very good reason, a par 3 uphill with danger all around. long is best as a slope at the back of the green will stop your tee shot. Good luck!

Hole 16, 396 yards, par 4The tee shot should be placed down the left of the fairway as it will run left to right on landing. The second shot must be played to the left of the flag – again this is a double green.

Hole 17, 326 yards, par 4a driveable par 4 but beware of the out of bounds to the right. a 3 wood down the left-hand side of the fairway will leave a short iron to the green. Please remember to use the warning bells which are in place to indicate to those playing behind that it is safe to proceed.

Hole 18, 172 yards, par 3an uphill par 3 to finish plays a similar club to the 9th and 15th holes and be careful on the sloping green.

Leeds Seventeen is an award-winning restaurant tucked away in the leafy suburb of Alwoodley, Leeds. It’s been voted both ‘Best Suburban Restaurant,’ and ‘Best Modern English’ and has a dedicated following of local diners. The restaurant and banqueting venue is an independent, family owned business that celebrates its Yorkshire heritage with zeal.

The owners and staff pride themselves on their strong focus on fresh, locally sourced produce, choosing to use the best seasonal ingredients available from small producers in the area. Their passion for contemporary British food with particular focus on Yorkshire, has certainly gained them a reputation.

Head chef, Wayne Brimicombe, developed his skills over a career spanning 20 years, working for both Gary Rhodes and Jean-Christophe Novelli. His experience and commitment to creating deliciously exciting dishes are a winning combination for the restaurant. “Championing Yorkshire and all its culinary delights is very important to me,” says Wayne. “Supporting the independent businesses and local producers and suppliers of quality food is key to the ethos of Leeds Seventeen. Our meat comes from the local butcher and our moreish range of cheeses consists of some incredible local offerings including the Yorkshire Blue from Shepherds Purse Dairy, just on the other side of Thirsk.”

In addition to the successful restaurant, Leeds Seventeen also provides banqueting suites for functions, weddings and corporate meetings, catering for both small parties and large scale events with options to suit every budget.

Join us for dinner – We have a brand new mouth-watering menu and fantastic weekly blackboard specials which we match with a fine selection of wines.

Providing the opportunity for members to spend time together off the course as well as on it is vital to any thriving well-rounded golf and there are many events held throughout the year which afford the chance to socialise in the splendid well-appointed clubhouse we are blessed with at Leeds Golf Club.

The various sections – men, rabbits (our higher handicap male golfers), ladies and juniors all have their own prize presentations at some stage throughout the year to celebrate their peers who have excelled over the preceding 12 months, while at the same time enjoying a pleasant evening in the company of their fellow members.

Special dinners celebrate the appointment of our new captains, a historic, busy and memorable year in the lives of the people lucky enough to be chosen, as well as for those around them.

Santa claus somehow manages to find time between wrapping his presents to make an appearance at our children’s christmas party, a popular event for both youngsters and their families which is usually held in the week before the big day itself.

The year ends on a high note with a traditional black tie dinner and dance to welcome in the new year.

Often you will find events in our social calendar are preceded by a golfing competition of one description or another. after all, it seems somewhat rude to come to cobble hall and not make use of the wonderful course we have at our disposal.
