About our Golf Club

Formed back in 1894 and now regarded by many to be the friendliest private members’ golf club in the county, Puttenham offers a challenging 18-hole tree-lined course, renowned for its superb condition, with Professional’s shop, buggy hire, practice facilities and driving range, as well as a welcoming bar and restaurant offering delicious home-cooked food to be enjoyed by members and visitors alike. Puttenham has thriving men’s, seniors’, ladies, mixed and junior sections, all of whom enjoy a wide range of competitions and matches. In addition, the Club organises many fun social activities for golfers and non-golfers throughout the year including bridge, quiz and bingo evenings, as well as various Christmas events. Puttenham also welcomes green fee and society visitors, many of whom return on a regular basis as they have enjoyed the course and friendly atmosphere so much.

8 The Course

The Course

With its sandy soil, the course is usually dry underfoot and drains quickly in wet weather providing excellent playing conditions all year round. However, in the event of a hot dry summer, Puttenham also has on-course watering using the supply from its own borehole. For those wanting to warm up before their round, or just get in some extra practice, there is a driving range, practice area (including a 3-hole Academy course) and putting green situated next to the 1st tee.

Having been originally formed in 1894, Puttenham is a mature and challenging course, not too long but the tight fairways and well-guarded greens mean you have to think your way around a layout where no two holes are the same.

Nestling in the picturesque foothills of the Hogs Back, the gently undulating 18-hole course at Puttenham is a mixture of heath and woodland, and the tree-lined fairways provide a particularly splendid backcloth of colour for the attractive sections of heather and many types of wild flowers. In spring the course is surrounded by bluebells and in early summer the azaleas and rhododendrons on the 12th and 13th in particular are a spectacle not to be missed.

Straight hitting and good course management are essential if you want to score well at Puttenham but the beautiful surroundings make it easier to bear if you stray off the straight and narrow. A welcome sausage or bacon sandwich from the Halfway Hut, nestling in the woods between the 9th green and 10th tee, may also help keep up your strength as you tackle the back nine.

The Club’s greenkeepers have a well-earned reputation for keeping the course in tip top condition, something often commented on by visitors to Puttenham. Golf Monthly magazine describing the 10th hole as “as good a hole as you’ll find anywhere”. Everyone will have their own favourites, and some of ours can be found over the next few pages. Why not come and play them for yourself? You will be pleasantly surprised to discover the delights of Puttenham Golf Club.

Key HolesHole 1, 274 yards, par 4

Puttenham’s signature hole is a relatively short par 4, but by no means easy! A 150-yard-plus carry over the pit, up a hill and, if necessary, over the emblem Oak tree is quite daunting for the first tee-shot of the day. And if you happen to open with a big [right-hand] slice, the Puttenham cemetery to the right of the slope can become a graveyard for your ball, as it’s out-of-bounds! If you manage to overcome these obstacles, the second shot is much easier into a very large green. However, the green itself is not easy with deceptive undulations and a ridge towards the back of the green. On medal days, the pin is usually placed at the back of the green and any short approach shot will leave a tricky putt up the ridge. An added difficulty is the size of the flag-stick! It’s much longer than usual so that it can be seen from the tee, but its height can impact your depth perception, and many shots to the hole are left short! Beware! No bunkers on this hole.

In the spring the teeing area on the 12th is reminiscent of Augusta, with magnificent azaleas and rhododendrons surrounding the pond that lies in front of the white tees! This deceptive par 4 of just under 400 yards requires an accurate tee shot aimed towards the left side of the fairway. The slope of the fairway should bring the ball back to the right side for a better shot into the elevated green. If you stay on the left side of the fairway, you will need to be able to execute a draw [right-handed] to find the green with your approach, which is beyond many club players! Any shot played short or right of the green will require a deft touch to get up the bank and close to the hole. Many players use the steep bank to the left of the green as a “get out” and allow the ball to run back down the slope and on to the putting surface. The green itself is large and relatively flat, but like many Puttenham greens, has some subtle borrows. No bunkers on this hole.

A reasonably long par 4 that once again requires accuracy from the tee. The driving line is towards a red/white marker pole to the right of the fairway just over the brow, as the fairway slopes to the left, and any tee shot hit slightly left of centre is likely to end up on some grassy ridges which can leave a very tough second shot. Trees line both sides of the fairway, and the ones about 80-100 yards to the right of the white tee boxes are particularly impenetrable. The approach to the green is downhill, and the green is protected front-left by a fairly shallow bunker. If you can’t fly the green with your approach, the best line is towards the fir tree just to the front-right of the green, as the slope should bring your ball onto the putting surface. One shallow bunker on this hole, front-left of the green.

Membership Full and 5-Day Membership continued

Puttenham organises regular competitions, knockouts and matches throughout the year for the men’s, ladies’, mixed, senior and junior sections so all ages and golfing abilities are catered for. The men have competitions on most Saturdays and Sundays as well as a number of mid-week events every month, whilst the ladies’ main competition day is Tuesday with Sunday as their alternative day. The lady members say that whilst they are competitive, they have a very friendly and relaxed attitude to their golf and on Tuesday lunch times the Clubhouse is always filled with ladies – some who have played in the competition and others who have just popped up for a bite to eat and a bit of a chat.

Mixed golf is also popular at Puttenham with a number of mixed greensomes and bowmaker events, as well as knockout competitions and matches against other local clubs.

The Puttenham seniors can play in the men’s and mixed events but also have their own full calendar of weekday competitions and matches, whilst the junior members play most of their competitions and matches during school holidays.

If you are a novice golfer aged 21 or over and don’t yet feel you are up to playing the full course, we also have an Intermediate Category which offers shorter holes to ease the transition from the practice fairway.

As a member’s Club, Puttenham is run by the members for the members and, unlike proprietary clubs, any surplus income is reinvested in the Club to maintain and improve the facilities.

Our green fee rates are competitive and include a lower price for twilight rounds. From time to time we also offer special rate tee times which are shown on our website and emailed to everyone who has registered their email address with us. The Club also holds a number of popular Open and Invitation Events during the year, as well as ladies’, men’s and mixed Coffee Mornings, which are always enjoyed by all those who take part.

Visitors are requested to respect the Club’s dress code both on the course and in the Clubhouse, specific details of which can be found on our website.

Handicap certificates are not required at Puttenham but all golfers are expected to have reached a reasonable golfing standard as the course is not suitable for beginners.

Our Caterers have a well-deserved reputation for delicious home-made food, prepared on a daily basis and the Dining Room can comfortably cater for 80 people. The inviting Spike Bar and Main Lounge, with their comfortable surroundings and welcoming ambience, offer a wide selection of wines, beers and non-alcoholic beverages. Our helpful and friendly staff will take good care of you and make your visit to Puttenham a memorable one.

Remember too, that as a member (golfing or social) our excellent facilities are available to hire free of charge for your special occasion (subject to a minimum spend). Speak to a member of our Catering Team for further details.

Puttenham has always been known as a very friendly Club and boasts a wonderfully welcoming Main Lounge, Spike Bar, Dining Room and Patio area to be enjoyed by members and visitors alike. The men’s and ladies’ changing rooms are spacious and well furnished with plenty of lockers and modern showering facilities. There is a disabled parking space in front of the Clubhouse and downstairs toilet with wheelchair access.

We are stockists of many major brands including Taylor Made, Titleist, Footjoy, Srixon and many more. We offer buggies, electric trolleys and pull trolleys at competitive prices for a round or on a full-day basis.

(A course of 5 individual lessons can be purchased for the price of 4)

Juniors can sign up for monthly-run Junior Academies that are conducted on Saturdays. The Junior Academy focuses on all abilities and ages and is undertaken in a fun-filled and structured environment.

You could join Puttenham initially as a social member and enjoy our excellent Clubhouse, discounted refreshments, and access to our practice facilities. Individual coaching sessions with our resident PGA Professional can be arranged, together with personally designed programmes to enable you to get your first handicap.

As well as our 3-hole course Academy Course we have special tees on the main course to ease your transition to playing 18 holes. The Ladies Section would be pleased to arrange for a personal contact to help you with any questions and help you find your way around. In addition, we hold special 9-hole competitions for beginners.

Club History

The fact that General Marshall was a special favourite of Queen Victoria at the time probably helped sway his judgement and, thus, Puttenham Golf Club was born, with the General quickly established as President.

As it happens, Queen Victoria herself had already visited the site that was to become Puttenham Golf Club when she stood on Frowsbury Hill (now the 2nd Tee) on a warm summer’s day in July 1858 to take the salute of 20,000 members of the British Army during a Royal Field Day.

On 8th July 2008, the Club commemorated this event in style when Queen Victoria’s great, great, great grandson, His Royal Highness Prince Edward the Earl of Wessex, attended a day of celebration and unveiled a plaque on the very spot where his ancestor had stood 150 years earlier. Puttenham Golf Club can therefore make some small claim to Royal connections!

On 8th October 1894, General Sir Frederick Marshall KCMG wrote to Mark Smallpiece, Lord of Puttenham Manor, asking if he would allow a group of Army Officers, Charterhouse School Masters and local businessmen to form a golf club on his land at Puttenham Common.

Puttenham’s first Captain, Major Howard Fairtlough, the Club Professional Albert Howlett and the Committee were responsible for laying out the original nine holes which measured just 2,413 yards with a “bogey” of 39. The oak tree on the fairway at the 1st hole, which has since become the Club’s emblem, was already a mature tree in 1894 and still looms menacingly as it waits for that errant tee shot, just as it did over 100 years ago! In 1935, the Club was given permission to extend the course by a further nine holes and by October 1937 Puttenham Golf Club could boast 18 separate holes.

Having bought the freehold to the Club from the Smallpieces in 1981, the opportunity arose the following year to buy a further 44 acres of land adjacent to the course, known as Monk Grove Copse. Purchasing the extra land meant a potential re-design of the course, with five new holes earmarked for the copse area, and Donald Steel appointed architect. Puttenham’s new course layout was officially opened in June 1990 with a yardage of 6,070 from the white tees and 5,556 yards from the yellow tees.

Updates and improvements continue apace and the course now measures 6,220 yards with a par of 71 from the white tees, 5,784 yards with a par of 71 from the yellow tees and 5,400 yards with a par of 71 from the red (ladies) tees.
