The Portland School of Music was designed to transform the experience of musical performance. The purpose of a musical academy is to encourage, aid, and inspire the growth of aspiring muscians. The goal of the Portland School of Music is to inspire not only the students, but the community. The Music division of the school is reminiscent of a concert hall, each floor plate curved differently, the walkways emulating curved balconies. Though somewhat traditional in form, roles are switched as the stage is placed adjacent the sidewalk against a glass curtain wall. While some portion of the audience will be looking down at the performers, other bystanders will be in position to be behind the performers, outside, looking up at the rest of the audience. The goal is to create a perspective that is flipped, giving individuals that don’t otherwise have the opportunity, to experience the perspective of the performer. This, in turn, allows the waterfront and the river beyond to be the backdrop for the stage.

The Housing Finance and Development Centre of Finland organized an international design competiton for social housing in Lahti, Finland. More specifically, the goal was to come up with a new urban plan, along with the design of a social housing building within the existing district of Sopenkorpi in Lahti, Finland. The design would be set in the year 2049, and would be based on a self-defined “future scenario.”

WITH Housing [Welcoming Individuals with Transitional Homes] is a transitional housing project done in collaboration with a non-profit organization that aims to help people in Seattle that are without shelter. In preparation for this project, our studio stayed in Tent City for a weekend to learn about the people we could be designing for and their way of life. We learned about a lot more than design in those three days; the weekend changed our lives and our perspectives.

The project I developed revolves around one of my first experiences in Tent City, when a younger gentleman that was staying there offered me his sweatshirt when he thought I looked cold. This offer immediately made me feel more comfortable in what seemed like a vulnerable situation. This instilled two ideas in me: first, people that live outside are consider-ably more aware of their surroundings; second, one simple act can dramatically change things. These two ideas drove the design of this project.

Inspired by Amazon’s impact on the Cascade neighborhood in South Lake Union, and designed for the young professionals working for such companies, this residential complex is meant to build relationships. Drawing from the idea that Amazon is supporting the neighborhood while it’s existance requires the support of the people, this project reflects the same support system. Based on a set of simple rules, one bedroom units are aggregated to create a porous neighborhood of interaction- filled space, while most of the civic program within the project is pulled up to the top of this twelve story building. This lets the community take advantage of South Lake Union’s priceless views, while this civic space becomes the structure for the residential units, as they are hung below.
