    Logo

The logo was designed to equally

    represent the products from Tallgrass

Brewing Co. and Grace Hill Winery. The

wheat strand corresponds to the beer

produced at Tallgrass, while the green

grape corresponds to the wine produced

    at Grace Hill.

The colors were selected for theirbrightness, cohesiveness, and

    representation.

Yellow represents both wheat and the

sunshine needed to grow both products.

Green represents both the grapes needed

    for wine and the earth.

    Blue represents water needed for

    everything to grow.

DNA+ is an innovative, avant-guard company with a design expression thatis positive, unique, beautiful, and with an energy conveying constant

    evolution

DNA+ is holding this international competition to generate a new feature tothe Antelope bath collection. The collection was inspired by Antelope

canyon in Arizona. Proposed designs must compliment existing elements ofthe collection, as well as uphold the philosophies of having easy access, beenvironmentally safe, and be compliant for use in a wet environment bothresidentially and commercially. Entries submitted must fit in one of thefollowing categories: furniture, accessory, or lighting.

The winning design will be determined by a jury comprised of membersfrom the DNA+ design and marketing teams.

The jury will award designs and concepts which are innovativeand

Die Casting is the process that uses a split metal tool die where molten metal is injected at highpressure. The cast part is ejected from the tool die by ejector pins on one of the tool die halves. The only materials that can be die cast are non-ferrous materials such as aluminum, zinc, magnesium, and copper-based alloys. The advantages include a low cost for high volumes, accuracy and ability for complicated designs, smooth surface on finished pieces, and fastproduction rates.

Extrusion is the process of forcing hot or cold copper, brass, aluminum, steel, other metals, andplastics through a shape-forming die. The material being extruded is plastically deformed fromcompression in the die cavity. It is usually best to utilize the basic shapes provided and sharpcorners are usually avoided. Another common use for extrusion is to cut the material into smallerpieces to be placed in molds or put through another process.

Tubing, just as it implies, refers to the manufacturing of tubes. In most all situations, tubes areformed from either plastic or metal being extruded through dies. The extruded product can then

be dimensioned, cut, capped, and finished according to the specifications.

Thermoforming is the process by which flat sheets of plastic are heated then brought into

contact with a mold to form plastic parts in the shape of that mold. Vacuum action, pressure,and/or direct mechanical force can be utilized to complete the process. Thermoforming is muchless expensive than injection molding pieces, and when done properly can have the sametolerances and precise detailing.

Computer Numerical Control (CNC) refers to machines that read data from computers andperform that given function. Some of the greatest benefits to using CNC are that difficult shapescan easily be produced, complex 3D models are easily formed, large numbers of pieces can beprocessed with consistency, the machines can easily transition to making different parts, computer aided designs can easily be imported, and the amount of human errors are reduced.

The final design came after many trials of trying to combine the Antelope canyon walls concept with the Antelope collectionhooks idea. The chosen design uses the assembly form of the hooks with the idea of reflecting light off a surface like in thecaverns of Antelope canyon.

The simple, elegant form of STRATAenhances elements of the existing

DNA+ collection without detractingfocus from their own beauty. While

there is a strong emphasis on thehorizontal plane, the subtle curveadds interest and drama. Just as lightrebounds off the cavern walls inAntelope canyon, light travels into thesurrounding space by deflecting offthe center piece of Corian. Aligningthe three parts of the light was

inspired by the layered soils of thecanyon formations. The name istaken from the plural of stratum, which means a layer of material,

naturally or artificially formed, oftenone of a number of parallel layers oneupon another.

Whether in a commercial space or

private residence, STRATA isdesigned for anyone who finds theaesthetics of the Antelope collectionpleasing. Asides from being compliantfor use in a wet environment, STRATAis environmentally safe both in itsmaterials and the lights utilized.

Keeping in mind the designphilosophies of DNA+, STRATA is

designed to bring comfort, style, andan inviting illumination to the bath

STRATA is designed to cast an inviting, warm-white light into its environment. Equip with high power LEDs, the lights themselves will last for

+50,000 hours, use minimal amounts of energy to operate, and be safe for the environment. Designed with the consumer in mind, STRATA iseasy to function, requires low maintenance, and goes beyond having only one lighting possibility. The STRATA is designed to serve threefunctions, all controlled by the flick of a switch.

    Mood Ambient Task

Lights on top of the Corian will be set to adimmer switch, giving the user options forsetting their desired mood in the space. This setting is perfect for situations thatrequire only a soft glow.

Most tasks in the bathroom will onlyrequire that the lights in the base beilluminated. The white of the Corian andthe convex surface will help more of thelight to be directed into the space.

For situations that require maximumlighting, both the lights in the base and ontop can be turned on simultaneously.

    124/237

The DNA+ Water and Wind competition was a great opportunity to gain experience in designing something for real production.

As a student designer, I felt challenged to create something to compliment an existing collection, work within set technology andmaterial limitations, consider human use factor, understand manufacturability, and consider all the different aspects of productdesign. I believe this project will be very beneficial for developing my portfolio.

What I enjoyed most about the project was that it was a competition. The thought of having a chance, even if small, of winning andearning recognition as an emerging designer was very enticing.

My main criticism about the design process was that there wasnt a lot of feedback from everyone in studio during the conceptualphase. It would have been beneficial to everyone to have more open discussions about ideas.

There are always parts of a project that I wish I could redo or change, but for the most part I am satisfied with the work Icompleted and end product.

    Brainstorming problems and solutions

Problem 1: Placing bottles around the border of a tub has the issues of staining, falling, and making it uncomfortable to use the tub. Most existing shower caddies are not aesthetically appealing, can fall off the shower head, and cant be adjusted.

    Attachment Detail Shelf 1

Solution: By designing a versatile shelving system that utilizes available vertical space users can free up the area around the tub, adjust the shelves for different bottles, add/remove shelves if necessary, have easier access to their products, and better organize.

    Shelf 2

    Wire Designs

Problem 2: The initial problem was having to stir liquids on the stove for extended periods of time. The problem evolved to try toimprove the mixer concept. Stand mixers are heavy and come with only one bowl, while hand mixers can be hard to maneuver.

    Attachment Detail Initial idea

    168/237

Solution: The main feature of this new concept is the ability to attach the mixer to any pot or bowl. By combining the power and motionof a stand mixer with the user ability of a hand held model, this design would accommodate a large variety of tasks. Some of the keyfeatures include a digital timer, different attachments that can be released by a button, and have a comparable weight to a hand heldmodel.

Problem 3: Numerous people burn themselves from taking things out of the oven because it is difficult to pull out the rack or get theirhands around the pan. Also, people with arthritis or back problems can face difficulties lifting things out of the oven.

In most households, women are responsible for cleaning, managing the kids, shopping, and maintaining order. Ontop of home responsibilities, many modern women arealso working full-time hours. Lives of women who fit thismold are balancing acts that leave them tired andsearching for personal time. Many women I am sure haveimagined a device that would speed up the shoppingprocess, manage coupons and store discounts, and savemoney by finding the best deals.

My design combines the familiarity and usability of remotesand cell phones with bar-code scanner technology to form

a device that will help simplify shopping for busy women.
