By Ralph LeeRotating your car's tires is like going to
the dentist. Nobody likes it, but it's somethingthat should be done. Depending on whereand when it happens, getting a flat tire is sim-ilar to teeth issues. If a tire goes flat in yourdriveway, it's like a small cavity that has to befilled. It's annoying but not that big a deal. Ifa tire blows in rush-hour traffic, you're talkingfull-blown root canal, and who wants that? Here are some tips to prevent tire decay.
Most newer model cars are front-wheeldrive, and tire rotation becomes importantbecause the front tires wear faster than therear. The reason for this is simple: When youmake any kind of full turn in traffic or followthe curve of the road, more of the vehicle'sweight is placed on the edges of the tires. This especially affects the front tires becausethese are ones that are actually turning whilethe rear tires stay in a straight line. This turn-ing causes the edges of the tires to wear overtime. If your tires wear unevenly, you're sus-pectible to spotty braking and poor han-dling-real toothaches, er, headaches.
Another important aspect to tire rotationis the eventual replacement of your tires. Ifyou don't rotate your tires, you'll replacethem two at a time, and that means alwayshaving uneven wear on your wheels. If youreplace your tires four at a time-and keepthem rotated regularly-you'll have even wearon all four.
How often should you rotate your tires?Well, that obviously varies based on the
amount of miles you drive eaUnfortunately, for some drivers, yneed to rotate your tires more often visit the dentist for a checkup. A rooften recommended at about 7,50That's often the time for an oil changsome multi-tasking and get both jobsonce. Check your owner's manuawhen it recommends tire rotations particular model.
How to have your tires rotated subject to debate similar to the dover the merits of fluoride. Again, chowner's manual to see if there's amethod recommended for your mvehicle. If there isn't, there are twways for front-wheel drive tire rotaboth are as simple as flossing. Oneis to move the front driver's side tiback driver's side and the back drivto the front passenger's side. The fsenger's side then moves to the backger's side and the back passengerthe front driver's side. Another metswap the front driver's side and the senger's side tires with each other, swap the front passenger's side tirerear driver's side. Either method shelp the tires achieve more evewear, and that's what you're after.
Keeping your tires rotated on abasis can prevent an ill-timed flat tirecan prevent grinding and gnashteeth-which is a whole different denlem.

By Ralph LeeThere's enough not to like about winter
without having your car break down on theroad. Take these steps while the weather iswarmer so your body temperature doesn'trise because of car problems when the tem-peratures drop.
Manual laborBreak out your owner's manual, grab an
iced tea (remember, you're doing this whileit's still warm out) and find a comfy chair. Now, read your manual and make sureyou've been doing all the recommendedmaintenance to this point. Get the things donethat you've neglected and make an appoint-ment to have anything done that's required inthe immediate future. Anything that's a prob-lem now (hard starts, stalling, rough idling)can be exacerbated by hazardous winter
conditions. An ounce of preventionDo a little investigative snooping under
the hood to prevent trouble before it starts.Check your belts and hoses for wear. Make
sure all your fluids are topped off, includingthe all-important windshield washer reservoir. When was the last time your anti-freeze waschanged? If you don't know, it may be pasttime. Don't forget the battery. Remove yourterminals and use warm water and bakingsoda to clean your battery's posts. There'snothing worse than having everythingmechanically sound only to find your vehiclewon't start because the battery is dead.
Wiper not wiping? It's a blizzard outside, but you're warm
and toasty in your smoothly running car. Staywarm by making sure your windshield wipersare in good shape before the blizzard. There's nothing worse-not to mention danger-ous-than having to stop every five minutes, getout of your car and brush the elements offyour windshield because you're wipers aren't
working right. Check the rubber and makesure there are no cracks or worn spots on theblade. Make sure the blade adheres to thewindshield as it moves. If it doesn't, you may

By Tresa Erickson"What are you going to all of that trou-
ble for?" your sister demands to know aftershe hears you making an appointment witha service station to have your tires inspect-ed. Unlike your sister who lives in theSunshine State, you live up north, wherewinters can be harsh. In order to ensure youget where you need to this winter, you arehaving your vehicle winterized, starting withthe tires.
Good tires can make all of the differ-ence on treacherous winter roads. In orderto prepare your vehicle for the rough weath-er ahead, you must make sure your tires areproperly inflated. Tires lose about a psi ofair pressure every month and every time theair temperature drops about 10 degrees.
Vehicles with under-inflated tires handle well, especially on icy roaalso increase wear and tear and ugas (and who needs that with thegas these days).
If your vehicle is brand new, not have to worry much about the sure. It probably came equipped wpressure monitor that will inform ythe pressure has dropped below point. If you have an older vehicle, definitely need to keep an eye onpressure and have your tires checklarly.
You also need to keep an eytread depth. The more worn andthe tread on your tires, the less griphave on the road. Depending upoyou live and how treacherous th
become in the winter, you might consider switching to winter tires. Dspecifically for icy roads, these wilyou with superior grip. Keep in myou will need to replace all foShould you do just the back two, compromise your grip and your sensure this does not happen, sodealers refuse to sell consumers fefour tires, unless they need a singlement winter tire.
It is important that you wintervehicle. Start with the tires and wway up. The better prepared your winter, the safer you will be whenabout.
