Some people evengue that fall preparation is the most impor-nt thing you can do for a happy, productivearden in the spring. While the work is not asamorous, these simple steps can help ensureoduce next year.
Clear away all of the garden debris.Removing debris gets rid of places wherepests might try to overwinter. It will also keepdiseased materials out of your garden andcompost.
Fall is an excellent time to incorporatecompost or other organic matter into your soil.It will have time to decompose in place, pro-viding a boost directly to your soils. If youwant to keep fertilizing through the year, switch to a winter fertilizer, which is high inpotassium and low in nitrogen. This will pro-
mote root growth instead of above-grounddevelopment pushed by nitrogen.
While youll want to wait for heavy prun-ing of your trees and shrubs until they havegone fully dormant, you can clear out deadand diseased material in the fall, preventing itfrom spreading. Dip you shears in a dilutedbleach solution in order to prevent the diseasefrom spreading and prune back at least sixinches from any diseased area.

By Sam EricksonWith colder temperatures coming, yought be thinking about making some addi-
ons that will help your home and your pock-book get through the winter unscathed.any people automatically think of draftyaces in the home like doorsills or older win-ows. Its a great idea to pay attention toese, but insulation actually has a mucheater effect. Rather than a quick draft,
oor insulation is like a slow sieve, leakingnergy at every surface of your home. Fall ise perfect time to install more insulation inour home. .
The first step is to find out how much insu-tion you actually have. Crawl up in to yourtic and look at the depth of the insulationere. That can offer you a clue about theuality of the rest of the insulation in your
ome. There are also numerous organiza-ons that will come out and do a home ener-y audit for you. Having an energy audit is aood idea for a number of reasons, includ-
ing the fact that it will reveal the quality ofinsulation in hard-to-check places like insideyour walls.
These days, youve got several optionsfor home insulation. Most people think ofgiant rolls of pink, and these rolls or batts arestill readily available. Made of fiberglass orrock wool, they are easy to install and rela-tively cheap. They are also cut to standardwidths to fit between wall studs or floor joistsin the ceiling. You might also look into pro-fessional installation of loose-fill, rigid foamor foam-in-place insulation. Loose-fill insula-tion can be blown into place, making it use-ful for odd-shaped places like roofs or duct-ing where it can be difficult to install otherkinds of insulation. Rigid foam can beapplied to exterior walls and has a higher R-rating based on thickness.
Each type of insulation is given an R-rat-ing, essentially a measure of how muchresistance to heat flow the product has. As

Insulation is one of the mosteffective ways you can reduce your energyexpenditures, offering a much faster returnon your investment than other options.
