    Drs. Richard and Bruce Winter

Dear Dr. Winter, I have been told by mydentist to have laser surgery to fix my gumdisease. Can you comment on whether this is

safe and if it is better than the deep cleanings Ihave been getting for years?

Dear Jan, we now have a CO2 Superpulsedlaser at Hampton Dental Associates. The CO2laser is the most widely studied laser on themarket today with the most Universitysupported articles outlining their safety andeffectiveness. I can tell you that lasers arewonderful tools in dentistry if they are usedcorrectly. The ADA Council on ScientificAffairs has recently published a position paperon lasers and how they are used in dentistry. Some of the salient points of their paper are asfollows:

“There are currently more than twentycleared indications for use for dental lasers inthe United States.

According to the ADA position paper: “Thedental literature indicates that when “lasers” areused as an adjunct to meticulous root planing, mechanical or chemical curettage (i.e., theintentional removal of the epithelial lining of the sulcus) (lasers) offer no consistent benefitbeyond scaling and root planing alone withrespect to gain of the periodontal attachment.

Additional clinical data from properlydesigned clinical trials with adequate samplesizes are still required before it can be known towhat extent LANAP (Laser assisted newattachment procedures) are safe and effectiveacross the spectrum of patients with chronicperiodontitis.”

So while lasers can be used for removinglesions, performing frenectemies (removingtissue that holds tongues or lips down) andmany other soft tissue applications it has notbeen found to definitively treat gum disease. If our readers wish to be seen for evaluation of

soft tissue problems, melanin pigmentremoval, frenectemies or evaluation andtreatment of gum problems we invite them tocall us for an examination at 414-464-9021.

There were approximately 20 people atthe Jackson site that day.

"We're just thrilled by all the handsthat come here and all the ways thatyou are serving not only Habitat, butyour community. Thank you again forbeing part of this," she said.

She later explained that as part of aNational Day of Remembrance andService, the day was an opportunity tocelebrate all the members of the com-munity who are coming together tohelp their neighbors.

"We just wanted to take this oppor-tunity to mark that occasion and tocelebrate the many open and willinghearts that serve with Habitat forHumanity," Pfaff said.

The house being constructed inJackson is a side-by-side that will servetwo families. Pfaff noted that Habitatwill provide the mortgage, which isbased on the families income. Work

began on the home in the summer andit hoped to be completed by the end of the year. Habitat for Humanity of Washington and Dodge Countiesreceived a $50,000 grant from ThriventFinancial to assist with the project.

As the program ended, Wantathanked the volunteers for their workon the project.

"I know that you're all eager to getto work and eager to make a difference,so we don't want to hold that up anyfurther with our festivities, so have agreat, great day -- be as productive asyou can be while being as safe as youcan be," Wanta said.
