When Town of Jackson resident RobertKreiter, a member of Boy Scout Troop 765,considered what to do for his Eagle Scoutproject, his heart was with the children of the community.

A volunteer at the Jackson AreaCommunity Center, Kreiter took on the taskof building a 30-by-70-by-35-foot fence inwhich the center’s Early Childhood childrencould be in a protected Tot Area while havingfun outdoors.

“I said to my parents that I wanted to dothis project so the children had a safe placeto play outside and I got started the next dayby pricing materials,” the 15-year-old said.

The West Bend East High School sopho-more has been volunteering at theCommunity Center and also for the Boys andGirls Club that runs out of the building forthe past year and he truly connects with thekids, his mother Renee Kreiter said, so theproject was a natural choice.

“Robert gets the kids and they get him,”Renee said. “He has such a huge heart. Hisfather (Eddie) and I are extremely proud of the young man he is becoming.”

Kreiter, an honor roll student who playstrumpet and soccer, already had a full platewhen he joined Scouts three years ago. Hewas lured in by the promise of fun, but it hasbeen the giving back aspect that has kept

him in the uniform.“We’ve helped clean up and lay new wood

chips on the trails in Jackson, done fooddrives for the local food pantry, rang bells forthe Salvation Army, helped the younger chil-dren with the annual Fish Derby and partici-pated in the Memorial Day ceremony with theVFW at the local cemetery each year,” hesaid. “Helping others makes you feel reallygreat.”

When it came time to select an EagleScout undertaking, Kreiter knew the Tot Areafence was going to be a challenge.

“I met with (Parks and RecreationDirector) Kelly Valentino who has a big binderof projects that need to be done in the com-

munity,” he said. "It was one of the harder of the projects, but I really wanted to help outthe community.”

The process began about a year ago andincluded meeting with the Friends of theJackson Jt. Park and Recreation Committee, obtaining approval from the Village Board, and months of fundraising, planning, order-ing materials, digging holes and building. Thevillage funded and poured a surface for playand a playset has been donated for the area.

“The project turned out even better thanI planned,” said Kreiter.

During a Sept. 16 dedication ceremony, the Scout was commended by VillagePresident Mike Schwab.

"So often we hear of kids not amounting

to much or kids notdoing this thingright or that thingright, but here wehave a great exam-ple -- along withyour fellow scouts --of someone doingsomething reallygreat," Schwab said, adding that Kreiterwas likely encour-aged to do a projectlike this by his parents and scoutmaster. "Wereally appreciate what you did, because thisis a beautiful thing."

John Binsfeld, president of the Friends of the Joint Park and Recreation Committee, said Kreiter approached the committee ask-ing for money to support the project.

"We immediately said this is just the kindof project that the Friends Committee waslooking for. Something that would help thePark and Rec. Department, something thatwould help the community and somethingthat would last a long time. So we werewholeheartedly behind it," Binsfeld said.

The teen confirmed that he indeedreceived much help and guidance with hisventure.

“I want to thank Kelly Valentino for beingso great and helping me every step of the way

and my parents for all their support andeverything they do,” he said.

For her part, Valentino said she ispleased with Kreiter’s entire troop whichhas been responsible for much good workin the Jackson area.

“We are very proud of the scouts that

develop through Jackson Troop 7incredible projects are a direct rthe outstanding leadership demonstrated and taught by thleaders. Robert is certainly onescouts that was committed to a vficult project which in turn spar

Automobiles are more expensivethan ever before. According to autoresearcher Kelley Blue Book, the aver-age transaction price of a new car ortruck sold in the United States in Aprilof 2015 was $33,560. That figure, whichrepresents a nearly 3 percent increasefrom the average transaction price ayear earlier, highlights just how expen-sive new cars have become. Becausecars and trucks are such significantinvestments, many drivers want to getthe most bang for their automotivebuck. While that desire compels somedrivers to purchase the most fuel-effi-cient vehicle they can afford, motoristsshould know that fuel efficiency is notthe only way they can secure the bestreturns on their automotive invest-ments.

    MaintenanceAdhering to manufacturer mainte-

nance guidelines is perhaps the mosteffective way for drivers to ensure agreat return on their automotiveinvestments. Routine maintenance, whether it's changing oil at the recom-mended mileage intervals or keepingtires properly inflated so engines aren'tovertaxed, can add years to a vehicle'slife expectancy, stretching drivers' dol-lars along the way.

TechnologyMany drivers purchase a car or truck

and never give a second thought to thevehicle's lights. But there's a great dis-parity between standard manufacturer-installed lights and aftermarket lightsthat employ the latest technology, suchas Philips Vision LEDs. With LEDs, vehi-cle owners are less likely to lose a lightto burnout or failure, which can effectvisibility and potentially result in apolice citation. Unlike incandescentbulbs that will eventually fade and godim, LEDs stay bright at the sameintensity, so drivers can be confidentand rely on their consistent perform-ance. Vision LEDs are new, innovativebulbs that are available for directreplacement on interior and exteriorlights and feature an advanced designcapable of handling extreme heat andhigh vibrations. Because of their robust

design and durability, Vision LEDs arebacked by a 12-year limited warranty, providing drivers with more than adecades' worth of return on their initialinvestments. And, unlikestandardincandescent lights in brake light appli-cations, Vision LEDs turn on instantly, helping drivers react faster. A faster

light response can help reduce overallbraking distance. For example, at aspeed of 75 mph, a driver can reducebraking distance by up to 20 feetbecause of a quicker reaction to thebrake lights.

Styling upgradesBecause they are often personal-

ized, automotive style upgrades arerarely associated with great returns. But some style upgrades are wiserinvestments than others. For example,Philips Vision LEDs mimic the popularlighting style used by many of today'shigh-end luxury vehicle manufacturers, enabling drivers to give their vehiclesthe same high tech, top-of-the-linelook offered by luxury brands withoutsaddling them with the higher costs of owning such vehicles. The Vision LEDs

are available to replace brake and tail-lights as well as back-up, dome, glovecompartment, side markers, trunk, andlicense plate lights, allowing drivers to

make stylish upgrades that are backedby a limited 12-year warranty.

The pink ribbon has been synony-mous with breast cancer for years.Nowadays, people rarely think twicewhen they see pink ribbons, havinggrown accustomed to the pink ribbonand what it symbolizes.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month hasbeen celebrated each year since 1985,and many other breast cancer awarenessinitiatives have been devised sincethen. While the pink ribbon may seemlike it's been in use for just as long, itwas actually established only about 20years ago.

Ribbons have long symbolized some-thing important. For decades, yellowribbons have been used to alert othersto soldiers at war or hostages that had-n't yet come home. People often tie yel-low ribbons around trees at home untiltheir service men and women camehome safely. During the height of HIV/AIDS activism andawareness, redribbons were worn to symbolize supportfor those with the disease.

Although the pink ribbon evolvedbecause pink expresses femininity,

calm, health, and youth, the first breastcancer ribbon was actually peach.Charlotte Haley is credited with devis-ing the first breast cancer ribbon in1992. She was a breast cancersurvivorand came from a family of women whoalso fought the disease. She createdpeach-colored loops at home and thendistributed the ribbons at her local gro-cery stores. Haley encouraged people towear the ribbons and contact legislatorsto demand more funding for breast can-cer research. An attached note was dis-tributed with the ribbons stating, "TheNationalCancer Institute annual budgetis $1.8 billion, only 5 percent goes forcancer prevention. Help us wake up ourlegislators and America by wearing this

ribbon."The same year Evelyn Lauder, seniorcorporate vice president for the Estee

Lauder company, and Self magazine edi-tor Alexandra Penney teamed up to pro-duce a pink ribbon. It was distributed atmakeup counters all across the country. The company collected more than200,000 pink ribbon petitions askingthe U.S. government for increased fund-ing for breast cancer research.

Although Lauder and Haley reachedpeople on different levels, their goalswere the same: To educate the public onthe lack of funds allotted to breast can-cer research.

Pink ribbons are now seen all overand have become the uniting force formillions of women who are facing breastcancer or supporting someone with thedisease. In 1996, Nancy Nick created ablue-and-pink ribbon to symbolize malebreast cancer ribbons in honor of herlate father. The ribbons remind othersthat breastcancer can affect men as wellas women.

Although you can see waves of pinkevery October for BreastCancerAwareness Month, many people dontheir ribbons year-round. Great strides

have been made with respect to breast-cancer, but with about 225,000 newcases popping up each year in theUnited States alone, there is still workto be done.
