The regional VeteransAdministration (VA) office inMilwaukee is helping the federalagency address a backlog of claimsnationwide, according to MarkBaldwin Jr., officer for the WashingtonCounty Veterans Service Office.

Baldwin updated the WashingtonCounty Board on veterans-relatedactivities June 11.

Baldwin said the VA shipped in6,000 claims which are more than 18

months old from Houston and LosAngeles to the Milwaukee regionaloffice to increase the overall turn-around.

That is going to slow down howwe take care of our veterans here. Were going to see a slowdown in ourprocessing of claims here inWisconsin, Baldwin said.

Baldwin added that county veter-ans agency staff will have to beaccredited with the federal VeteransAdministration in order to access thefederal agency's documents online.

Having staff accredited willgreatly improve our ability to respondto veterans and their dependents in atimely fashion, Baldwin stated in awritten report to the board.

According to the written report, there were an estimated 9,206 veter-ans in the county as of 2012. Veteransin the county accounted for $14.4 mil-lion in Veterans Administration com-pensation, pension and insurance,$34.9 million in VA home activity, andthere are 4,893 veterans buried with-in the county borders.

The county office is responsible forassisting Washington County veteransand their families in obtaining state orfederal veterans benefits to whicheach veteran is entitled due to activemilitary service, according to the mis-

sion statement at the beginning of thewritten report.

According to the written report, the three goals for the county agencythis year are providing direct outreachto returning veterans from Iraq andAfghanistan, participating in eventsthat are most beneficial to our veter-ans when our resources permit andbeginning the federal accreditation ofcounty staff.

According to the written report, the goal of the county agency was toreceive $31,042 in state benefits for2012, a figure which was based onthe county having 2.28 percent of thestates veterans population. The coun-ty received $6,868 in benefits.

    Supervisor Mike Miller asked

Baldwin what the board needs to getdone to increase the amount.

Baldwin replied that the amount ofbenefits the state used to offer isdecreasing and many of the dollarsare need-based. He said most of thebenefits that previously came to thecounty were through loans and homeapplications. However, Baldwin saidboth of those programs have been sus-

    pended by the state.

sister gets cranky so easily. My best

friend, although I love her dearly, is unpre-dictable and undependable. I have somefriends from school, but we rarely talk andreally only keep in touch throughFacebook. My coworkers are becomingfriendlier, but we are not what I would callfriends yet. I'm getting married in sixmonths and I want to have a stress-freewedding. Whom do I choose to be in mywedding party?"

It's not always possible to select the"perfect" attendants. Personalities, tradi-tions, expectations and cultural mores caninfluence a bride's choice of her maid ormatron of honor and her bridesmaids. There are those who expect to be asked tobe in your wedding; after all, you were intheirs. Keep your plants blooming and lookingeir best in spite of the heat, humidity and

ests of summer. Immunize your plants againstommon environmental stresses such as heatnd drought, while building their defensesgainst insects and diseases natural defensesth an organic plant strengthener, such as

AZ Rose Spray (gardeners.com).esearchers discovered when some plants areessed they produce hundreds of moleculesat help them better tolerate environmentalesses as well as insect and disease attacks.

When applied to plants in the form of a plant

strengthener, the treated plants improve theirown defenses, much like immunizations do forus. Gardeners will notice less damage fromstress, better recovery, reduced yellow leaves, and healthier plants overall.

Proper fertilization will help keep roseshealthy and producing lots of flowers. A soiltest is the best way to determine how muchand what type of fertilizer is best for rosesgrowing in your landscape.

Check your plants throughout the seasonfor signs of insects and disease. Early detec-tion makes control easier. Remove insects orinfested plant parts when discovered. Look forthe most eco-friendly control options whenintervention is needed.

Enjoy your efforts and improve your roses

appearance by harvesting a few rosebuds forindoor enjoyment. Prune flowering stems backto the first 5-leaflet leaf. You can prune backfarther on established plants, but be sure toalways leave at least two 5-leaflet leavesbehind on the plants stem.

Those gardening in cold climates shouldstop deadheading roses toward the end ofthe season. Allow the plants to develop rosehips. This helps the plants prepare for thecold weather ahead and increases hardiness.Plus, these red to orange fruits provide winterfood for birds as well as attractive winter inter-est in the garden.

And if you dont have roses, make this thesummer you add one or more of these beau-ties to your landscape.
