AIAA HRS Led Activities at Cooper Elementary School “Engineering Month”

What happens when you combine 70 kids, 5 volunteers, a Van de Graaff generator and a Tesla coil in a cafeteria? Lots of fun and learning at the same time!

Over the summer of 2010 HRS worked with Cooper Elementary School in Hampton, VA to provide hands-on engineering activities to the summer school students during 3 separate visits. To continue the partnership with Cooper Elementary, AIAA HRS took on a brand new challenge during February to celebrate “Engineering Month”. Nine HRS members, Karen Berger, Chris Rumsey, Brett Bathel, Shann Rufer, Lia Altenbutchner, Jennifer Inman, Elizabeth Lee-Rausch, John Theisinger and Kurt Swieringa, along with 12 current or retired NASA employees and 4 Air Force employees volunteered at the Engineering Camp at the Cooper Elementary School on three days in February (11th, 18th, and 28th), with two activities each day, presenting a different hands-on engineering activity to each of the grades, K-5. Each visit included a lesson on the subject, fun hands-on demonstrations and then the students did their own hands-on project, either in groups or individually. Parents of the students were also recruited to help out and assist in the activities.

The activities, picked to match what the students were learning in their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) curriculum at the school were:

• Airplanes and rockets (Kindergarten) – Students got to build their own balsawood gliders, learning about a flapping wing vehicle and launch stomp rockets.

• Sails (1st grade) – Students built puff mobiles, vehicles that are made from paper, paper clips, straws, lifesavers and tape and powered only by blowing on them.

• Windmills (2nd grade) – Students built and tested their own pinwheels. • Pulleys (3rd grade) – Students worked in teams to build a system of pulleys to see how easy it is to lift

heavy loads. • Electricity (4th grade) – Student worked in teams to build an electrical circuit, that when completed by

stepping on the boards, made a buzzer sound, building their own “Dance Floor”. • Energy (5th grade) – Students worked in teams to build and test a roller coasters built for marbles.

A number of volunteers came back for more than one event. The twenty-five volunteers served as the activity leaders (four were led by AIAA members and two by NASA personnel) or assistants in the classes, and helped to prepare the supplies for the various activities.

The month has been a huge success and the students, teachers, and parents really appreciate all of the hard work and effort put forth by so many people to give their students these wonderful hands-on activities. The materials collected will be compiled onto a CD and be available as a resource for any interested teachers.

2011 Congressional Visits Day Every year, AIAA members – engineers, scientists, researchers, students, educators, and technology executives – come to Washington, D.C. to take part in AIAA’s Congressional Visits Day program (CVD). They meet with national decision makers to discuss critical industry issues in civil aeronautics, civil astronautics, and defense. What’s our goal? Through face-to-face meetings with Members of Congress, congressional staff, key administration officials, and other decision makers, Congressional Visits Day raises awareness of the long-term value that science, engineering, and technology bring to America. Registration for this year's AIAA Congressional Visits Day is still open. Let decision makers hear your voice at this important public policy event, set for March 15-16 in Washington, DC.

With many new faces on Capitol Hill, due to the mid-term elections, CVD 2011 is a critical opportunity for AIAA’s members to educate Congressional decision makers about the value of aerospace to the United States’ long-term economic prosperity and national security. For more information on the AIAA Congressional Visits Day program, or to register for the program, please go to www.aiaa.org/events/cvd, or contact Duane Hyland at duaneh.aiaa.org or at (703) 264-7558.

Technical Talks for Career Workforce and Development Committee

The Career Workforce and Development Committee (CWDC) wishes to offer more lunchtime technical talks. We need your help. We encourage any members who have recently given conference papers to volunteer for an HRS lunchtime technical talk. If you recently saw an interesting presentation from a colleague we also encourage you to nominate them to speak. An HRS lunchtime talk is a great way to share your work with colleagues who may not have been able to attend the conference. It also offers an opportunity to hone your presentation skills. Our goal is to provide a luncheon once a month as a forum to showcase some of the great work of our Section members. The talk should be 20 to 30 minutes in length. AIAA will provide lunch for members. If there is enough interest we will extend the technical forum to include several evening talks to allow people unable to travel at lunchtime to attend. Please contact Richard Winski, the CWDC Chair ([email protected]).

Hampton Roads Section The Hampton Roads Section (HRS) of AIAA, which has a membership of nearly 1100, represents geographically southern Virginia and southern West Virginia. The membership is made up of employees and contractors of NASA Langley Research Center, aerospace industry professionals, retirees, as well as student chapters at Old Dominion University (ODU) in Norfolk, National Institute of Aerospace (NIA) in Hampton, and Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. The Hampton Roads Section actively participates in AIAA national initiatives and programs. Local programs are held throughout the year and cater to the needs of the entire membership including young professionals and retirees. The Section annually awards at least two $2,000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors planning careers related to aerospace engineering. The Section has a very active program in pre-college education. Please also visit the Section website at https://info.aiaa.org/Regions/NE/Hampton_Roads/default.aspx for more information.

Membership Information In an effort to reach all HRS members we are updating our e-mail mailing list once a month. To help us reach you with news and information on upcoming programs, please verify that your contact information is accurate in the AIAA database, especially your e-mail address. This can be done by accessing your account at the AIAA website, www.aiaa.org under the topic “My Information.” Something as simple as an e-mail “typo” could prevent you from receiving Section information. Student members should keep their record current, especially seniors, to take advantage of AIAA’s offer of one free year of Professional membership (2nd year 1/2 price). AIAA encourages students to transition into professional members and to become active in AIAA at the Section, Regional & National levels in order to take advantage of all the benefits AIAA has to offer. HRS is offering free program admission to new AIAA members joining at any of the HRS-sponsored events!
