The Virginia Beach-Norfolk-NewportNews MSA's strategic, mid-Atlanticlocation and superior transportationnetwork provide swift access to worldand domestic markets.
The Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA)is situated in the southeastern corner of Virginia. The MSA centers onHampton Roads, the world's largest natural deepwater harbor. Nine cities andsix counties comprise the metropolitan area. A totally integrated transportationnetwork of interstate highways, air, rail, and sea services provide excellentaccess between the communities of this MSA and the markets of the world.
The Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News MSA is 200 miles south ofWashington, D.C. and 100 miles south of Richmond, the state capital ofVirginia.

The city of Virginia Beach has a City Manager and an eleven-member CityCouncil. The city of Chesapeake has a City Manager and a nine-member CityCouncil. The cities of Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Poquoson,Portsmouth, and Suffolk have a City Manager and a seven-member CityCouncil. The city of Williamsburg has a City Manager and a five-member CityCouncil. The county of Gloucester has a County Administrator and aseven-member Board of Supervisors. The 576-bed Riverside Medical Center inNewport News offers a full range of services including a nuclear medicine unit,comprehensive heart program, cancer treatment center, neurosurgery, andpediatrics. Sentara Norfolk General has been designated as the tertiary carefacility and regional referral center for the Hampton Roads area. The EasternVirginia Medical School in Norfolk is affiliated with more than 30 area hospitalsand clinics. This internationally known medical school is the acknowledgedleader in invitro fertilization and embryo transfer in the United States.
Seventy-three nursing homes offer extended care to the elderly in the area.
The area is served by more than 2,425 physicians and 588 dentists.
More than 1,230 places of worship are located in the MSA. Most Protestantdenominations are represented along with the Roman Catholic, Jewish,Muslim and Greek Orthodox faiths.
The local public library systems operate 43 branches containing over3,900,000 volumes. Area colleges and universities open their library facilitiesto the public. Lifestyle
The Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News MSA is home to much of America'searly history. Jamestown, the site of the first permanent English settlement,offers a glimpse into the lifestyle of early settlers. Yorktown highlights thesights and sounds of the Revolutionary War and celebrates the Britishsurrender. Colonial Williamsburg recreates 18th-century America at theColonial Capitol. Mathews County has an active historical societyheadquartered in the Mathews Court House Square, a collection of 17thcentury buildings. Historical attractions found in Surry county include Smith'sFort Plantation built in 1609, Bacon's Castle built in 1665, the ChippokesPlantation State Park, which has a mansion and a number of outbuildings thatdate to the early 1800’s and the Chippokes Farm and Forestry Museum.Charles City County is noted for its abundance of historic sites andarchitecture including the beautiful Berkeley Plantation, Shirley Plantation, andWestover Plantation.
Area residents also enjoy many cultural attractions and museums. TheMariner's Museum in Newport News, with a collection of more than 800 modelships, figureheads, ship equipment, and instruments, is one of the mostfamous and complete maritime museums in the world. Also in Newport Newsis the Virginia War Museum, featuring the largest collection of war relics andhistorical records in the United States. Nauticus, the National Maritime Center,is located on the downtown Norfolk waterfront. Norfolk is recognized as the Arts capital of Virginia, and is the home city for theVirginia Symphony, Virginia Ballet, Virginia Opera and the CommonwealthTheatre Company. The Williamsburg Players is the area's oldest continuous community theatre.Founded in 1957, the troupe presents five professional-quality theatreproductions at the James-York Playhouse each season. The College ofWilliam and Mary is home to the Williamsburg Chamber Ballet and also hostsconcerts, plays, and lecture series open to the general public, and during thesummer hosts the Virginia Shakespeare Festival. The Hampton ArtsCommission sponsors events, including the Great Performers Series, whichconsists of ballet, musical, and theatrical performances. Broadway productionsand entertainment attractions appear in Richmond and Norfolk.
Recreational activities abound in the area. Facilities located along the Jamesand York Rivers offer a variety of activities that include boating, fishing,camping, biking, and tennis. There are hundreds of parks and campgroundsthroughout the area. First Landing State Park, located in Virginia Beach, is aregistered National Landmark located along the Atlantic Ocean andChesapeake Bay. Other significant parks are the Virginia Zoological Park andthe Norfolk Botanical Gardens. The 1,680-acre Chippokes Plantation StatePark and the 19-acre Charles Steirly Heron Rookery provide fishing,swimming, boating, camping and picnic facilities.
The region boasts an abundance of golf courses, including the GoldenHorseshoe in Williamsburg and Kingsmill, Fords Colony, Legends atStonehouse, and Governor’s Land at Two Rivers in James City County.
The Hampton Coliseum, with a 13,800-person capacity, is home to the annualHampton Jazz Festival and also hosts a variety of concerts, events, tradeshows, and conventions. Harbor Park, on the banks of the Elizabeth Riveralong Norfolk’s downtown waterfront, is the 12,000-seat home of the AAANorfolk Tides, the farm team of the Baltimore Orioles. The Norfolk Scope ishost to a wide variety of events including conventions, concerts, and familyshows and is home to the Norfolk Admirals, the primary American HockeyLeague affiliate for the Tampa Bay Lightening of the NHL. Located in James City County, Busch Gardens Williamsburg has been votedthe world's "Most Beautiful Theme Park" for fourteen consecutive years by theNational Amusement Park Historical Association (NAPHA) and named theworld's "Favorite Theme Park" for four years in a row. With dozens of thrillingrides and attractions, ten main-stage shows, a wide variety of authentic foodsand shops, and an enchanting children’s area, Busch Gardens is the ticket to aworld-class adventure. Water Country, USA, a subsidiary of Busch Gardens, islocated in York County. Water Country USA is the mid-Atlantic's largest familywater play park. featuring state-of-the-art water rides and attractions all set to a1950s and '60s surf theme. The park offers a surf shop and gift shop, sevenfood service areas, locker rental, bathhouse facilities and free use of life vestsand inner tubes.
A number of festivals are also held in the area. Hampton Bay Days is athree-day event, held in September that celebrates the cultural, recreational,environmental, and economic importance of the Chesapeake Bay. This festivalattracts 200,000 visitors to downtown Hampton and features a yacht race, artshow, food, and concerts by such performers as the Beach Boys. VirginiaBeach's Neptune Festival is a ten-day celebration, featuring art, boating,sports, and entertainment activities. Market Days, held each September, is atwo-day celebration with local foods, music, and arts and crafts. The annualPork, Peanut and Pine Festival held in July attracts over 75,000 visitors.
