Probably the only goodnews that came out of lastFriday’s statutory budget

meeting is that the Municipalrates for 2014/15 remain thesame as this year 1.37c in therand( 7% ) - but home ownerswill inmostcasespaymorethancurrently in terms of the newvaluation roll. Electricitycharges will increase by 7.39%and refuse by 6%!

This special statutory budgetmeeting is probably one of themost important of the yearyet, unbelievably, neither theChief Financial Officer waspresent nor his deputy.

TheCFOwasattendingacon-ference in Pretoria on behalf oftheMunicipality and his deputyhad been sent off for the day toa Provincial meeting! Accepta-ble in terms of legislation withthe Administrator and Munici-pal Manager, as accounting of-ficer, present..but certainly notconfidence generating for rate-payers.

Compounding this somewhatsurreal situation - timewas tak-en up by a commercial presen-

tation by a Vodacom represent-ative to convince theMunicipal-ity that its product on offer andservice was superior and theone to choose costwise andservicewise! Interesting toknow whether other such com-panies were approached andwhy it was necessary to havesuch a presentation at a Budgetand public meeting!

Over the past year the Grey-town Gazette has requested in-formation from the Municipali-ty on a number of issues -to noavail. IFP Councillor Hitla Ma-harajhashadthesameproblemand submitted a list of querieshe has raised over the monthswithout response from the Ad-ministrator: Queries such as:vi-olation of coverage bylaws inregard to ex Councillor Ma-vundla-the fact that this Coun-cillor had been present at thediscussion of the proposed newmall and failed todeclarehis in-terest and recuse himself; thecordoningoffofasectionofPineStreet for the proposed newhospital; and was due processfollowed for the cordoningoff of

a section of Okes Street.The Councillor also refers to

the appointment of the Munici-pal disaster manager -the ad-vertisement for this post statesthat 3 years relevant experi-ence and possession of HumanResources diploma or degreeare minimum requirements forthe job - the Councillor is re-questing information as towhether due process was fol-lowed and what basis the mini-mumrequirements for theposi-tion were ignored.’ There hasalso been a lot of comment inthe townabout the alleged theftof R60 000 from the MunicipalTreasury and the fact thatCouncillors were not immedi-ately informed-aschargeshavenow been laid with GreytownPolice the matter is sub ju-dice.No answers have been re-ceived either to inquiries as towhat action has been taken inregard to the theft of a Munici-pal tractor and vandalisation ofTLB some months ago.

With an operating expendi-ture at R241million (15%up onthis year) a budgeted deficit of

R21.3 million is projected.Main challenges faced in

drawing up the budget for thefollowing year:

*Economic situation localand nationally.

*aging and poorly main-tained road and electcity infra-structure *Increase of bulkelectricity *Wage increases of6.formunicipal staffwhichcon-tinue to exceed consumer infla-tion rate *Additional staff re-quest from Management with-out any due diligent studies andestablishmentofsecurity (couldbeprivatised) anddisaster (Dis-trict responsibility) sectors.

WORLDBloodDonorDay is cel-ebrated on Saturday, 14 June,throughout the world to raiseawareness of the need for safe,good quality blood and bloodproducts and to honour themany voluntary unpaid blooddonors for their life-saving giftsof blood.

This year's campaign “SafeBlood for Saving Mothers” is todevelop a strategy to highlight

the need for timely access tosafe blood in the prevention ofmaternal deaths. Approxi-mately 800 women die frompregnancy or childbirth-relat-ed complications daily in devel-oping countries. More than halfof them take place in sub-Saha-ran Africa and almost one thirdin South Asia.

The risk of maternal mortali-ty is highest for adolescent girls

under 15 years of age. Severebleedingduringdeliveryandaf-ter childbirth is a major causeof death, illness and long-termdisability.

The South African NationalBlood Services (SANBS) hasdedicated the whole month ofJune to increase awareness re-

ofacomprehensiveapproachtoprevent maternal deaths.

SANBS encourages people todonate blood regularly andwouldto thanktheblooddonorswhosacrifice their time inanef-fort to save lives of people inneed of blood.

THE 159th Annual GeneralMeeting of the Umvoti Agricul-tural Society was held last Fri-day at the Green Bar. Outgoingpresident Andrew Mason out-lined what Umvoti AgriculturalSociety has achieved over thepast year,with the variousport-folios the UAS is involved in onbehalf of the farmer's in thecommunity (namely security,land issues, municipal rates,

roads, emerging farmers andcommunity upliftment and en-vironmental matters, etc)

and the importance of beingamember of a local associationand organised agriculture (ieKwanalu, AgriSA, FSA, etc) asmost of theUAS fees go towardsKwanalu who do so much forthe farmers in Natal.

Guest speaker at the dinnerwhich followed was South Afri-

ca's famous swimmer, Nataliedu Toit, who addressed the au-dience on overcoming adversi-ty, the lessons she has learnedand the importance of havingself-belief, emphasising thatthis is an exceptionally power-ful tool, if used correctly.

Natalie told of thedetermina-tionwhenat theageof 16, threemonths after the accidentwhichresulted inhavingher leg

amputated at the knee, shewasback in the swimming pool. Shebelieves firmly in the impor-tance of “swimming your ownrace and not someone else's.”

It was an enjoyable eveningwith a good attendance fromUAS members. Thanks to theGreen Bar for hosting the eve-ning and the Old Coach Housefor accommodating the guestspeaker.

ades in regard to Lot194 and the provisionof services.

Although manypromises have beenmade by the Govern-ment, and the Depart-ment of Land Affairsand of Rural Develop-ment over many years,very little has actuallybeen done.

The interdict wasconfirmed by the Pie-

termaritzburg HighCourt as a Court Orderon 25 April this year.

In basic terms, thismeans that any suchactions as blockadingthe road, any access ordestruction of crops,property animals etcon Lot 194, enteringany section other thanwere the communitylives etc. are illegal.

TWELVE schools participated inthe very successful NtshishiliCluster sports tournament heldon 4 June at Ntshishili sports-ground, Tugela Ferry. The tour-nament, organized by the clus-ter sport committee, includedsoccer and netball as the sport-ing codes. In an interview withMiss Ngidi of Phumela PrimarySchool, shesaidhowpleasedshewas to see such progress in thecluster, as the criteria used wasfair to everyone. Previously,

therewereproblemsasteachersfrom the combined schools usedto select pupils from seniorgrades. All involved expressedtheir thanks to chairperson MrDV Nyondo and the committeemembers for their efforts inmaking the day such a success.

The games were extremelywell planned with strict mea-sures and criteria to follow andonly pupils up to Grade sevenwere permitted to participate.

The three top netball teams

received trophies. Unfortunate-ly the boys were unable to finishtheir games as a result of MziniPrimary teachers not complyingwith theplanningof the commit-tee - Mr Nyondo said that thecommittee was busy sorting outthis problem and a date wouldbe announced to finalise thegames, after strict disciplinaryaction had been taken againstthe school concerned. - Suppliedby Ntshishili Cluster sportschairperson: DV Nyondo

In sporting news, the hockey seasonis drawing to a close and the sports de-partment is gearing up to start the ath-letics season.

In our last match of the season, ourhigh school girls played at St Anne'sthis past weekend.

Our U14 and U16 teams unfortu-nately lost, but our first teammanagedto fight valiantly, ending the match inadraw.Also thisweekend, ourU9,U11and U13 teams had lots of fun at theNew Hanover hockey tournament,with theU9swinning three of their fivegames, the U11s winning three out offour and the U13s ending with one winand two draws in their four games.

Our thanks go to the organisers fora lovely day.

The hockey season will end off thisweek, with both boys' and girls' inter-househockeymatchesandwe look for-ward to reporting next week whichhouse managed to dominate on thehockey field this year.

Ladysmith is always a formi-dable opponent on the hockey

field, and Saturday against La-dysmith's firsthockey teamwasno exception.

Fast game play saw excellentdefence from both teams withLadysmith managing to maketheir shots at goal count, leav-ing the end score 0-3 in their fa-vour.

LastWednesday and Friday,the first boys' hockey teamplayed against Treverton'ssecond and St Charles' thirdteams.

The boy's had a slow start inthe first game but managed topick up their intensity on Fri-dayandtheyendedupwinningboth games 4-0 and 2-1 re-spectively.

The U16 team also playedagainst Treverton and StCharles and managed to win5-1 against Treverton but lostagainst St Charles.

On Thursday, 29 May, thefirst, second and U16 girls'hockey teams travelled toWartburg.

The first team lost 4-2, sec-ond team lost 1-0 and the U16

team lost 3-1.On Saturday, 31 May, the

first, second and U16 girls'hockey teams travelled toPMBto play against Alex. The firstteam won 3-0, second teamdrew 1-1 and the U16 teamwon 7-0.

The U13 hockey girls playedagainst Treverton onWednes-day, 28 May.

The girls played really wellbut ended up losing 3-1. OnSaturday, the girls travelled toWartburg to play their U13team. Even though we spentthe majority of the game intheir circle, we drew the game0-0.

The U10 girls' hockey teamtook a trip toWartburg on Sat-urday toplayagainst theirU10team.

The girls played well as ateam and were a force to bereckoned with, winning 5-2.On Wednesday, they had ahome game against Her-mannsburg which they won8-1.

On Saturday, 31 May, theU11 hockey girls travelled toWartburg. They played an ex-cellent game, winning 11-1.On Monday, 2 June, the girlsplayed againstHermannsburgat Wembley and won 4-0.

TALENTED young pupils from Hermanns-burg Combined School did well in the cir-cuit level youth development competitionorganized by the Department of Educationon 4 June.

The winners took part in District level inDundee last Saturday.

in front of them near Stanger.The injured two were taken to
