Carl Wessels (55), a risk man- ager for Noodsberg Illovo Sugar Mill, his wife Wendy and two of their friends, had just arrived back at Christine and Robert Wilson’s farm to find a house- breaking and car theft in progress. Brian Jones, founder of SA CAN, said they were called by the SAPS and ER24 Advanced Life Support to assist with a house robbery and farm mur- der that had just occurred. ER24 found that there was nothing they could do for Wessels and he was pro- nounced dead at the scene. “Three suspects, one armed with a knife, one with knobkier- rie and one with firearm, ac- costed the couples. “During the robbery ... an un- forgiving, brutal murder took place,” said Jones. He said the motive seemed to be housebreaking and car theft because when the couples ar- rived at the home, the house had already been broken into and the suspects were allegedly busy hot-wiring the car. Jones said the family were travelling in a brand new car and to avoid dogs scratching it, they decided to park it outside the yard and walk to the house. “The suspects thought the family were coming for them and imme- diately ac- costed them [taking them] into the house. “As the suspects locked the door the alarm went off and the suspects be- gan to pan- ic,” said Jones. When the alarm went off, Carl was shot at point-blank range be- fore the sus- pects fled the scene on foot, leaving the car behind. Jones com- mended the work done by the police and the support they gave the families involved. “The SAPS have been beyond amazing, caring and we feel confident [the criminals] will arrested swiftly. “The team- work from all divisions, both lo- cally, cluster and provincial [was outstanding]. They need to know how appreciative we are from the communi- ty,” said Jones. He thanked the Careline Crisis Cen- tre director, Joey du Plessis, and her team for staying until 10 pm on Sunday night to help the survi- vors. “In something as horrific as this, point blank murder, your life is going in one direction and instant- ly it changes to another. “We have a long way to go, walking with the survivors and just get- ting them through the next few days,” he said. Wessels was de- scribed by a friend as a gentle- man who was well-known and loved by the community. At the farm where the murder oc- curred, private security guards were posted outside yesterday. They said Wessels’s friends were unwilling to speak to the media and referred The Wit- ness to the police. They declined to give names. Police forensic teams were doing an analysis of the scene. Koos Marais of the KwaZulu- Natal Agricultural Union said the news of yet another farm at- tack in a rural area disturbed them. “We believe the police will give their urgent attention to the matter and expect arrests soon. “We again call on farmers to be vigilant, especially when returning home and find things not as they left them. “We re- quest that the police step up their patrols in the rural areas,” said Marais. Police provincial spokesper- son, Captain Thulani Zwane said the suspect took two com- puters and printer. He said New Hanover SAPS is investigating a murder case and no arrests or recoveries had been made. It is believed the suspects also made off with cellphones and wallets. — Witness Man shot and killed in FARM ATTACK IN SOMETHING AS HORRIFIC AS THIS, POINT BLANK MURDER, YOUR LIFE IS GOING IN ONE DIRECTION AND INSTANTLY IT CHANGES TO ANOTHER

THE South African National BloodService (SANBS) is urgently appealing to donors, as blood stocks are extremely low.Particularly low is the group O blood, the universal blood group that canbe given to anyone in an emergency. KZN stock level is only on 1.4 daysand nationally on 2.4 days, whereasfive days cover is needed.

Traditionally, winter is a time whenblood collection decreases due topeople contracting flu and may be onmedication such as antibiotics whichprevents them from donating blood. The shortages also comes about withregular schools and tertiary institutions, which contribute to 45% of theblood collected, being involved inmidyear examinations, followed bythe winter holidays and thereforeblood drives at these institutionsare virtually impossible to host.

Therefore this is an appeal to donors to make their way to one of thedonor centres. Unfortunately, whenthe supply of blood drops, the demand does not decrease and approximately 3 000 units of blood are stillneeded by patients daily

Sinakhokonke Dladla, Greytown HighSchool matric class 2013 is back inGreytown undertaking research on soilas part of a study at the Nelson MandelaMetropolitan University in George.Sinakhokonke is studying agriculturalmanagement at the university.

In his report, which should be of interest to all farmers, he outlines howsoil comes about. In the Greytown district, because of thebeneficial weather conditions, hightemperatures and rainfall have resulted in “deep soils of fine texture which

are formed under intense weathering.”He records that the Hutton soil formdominates this area. Hutton solidshave undergone excessive leaching dueto high rainfall, thus leaving the soilinfertile with Al and H as the dominating cations that come with rainfall. With high rainfall, there is a tendencyfor soil to be acidic due the decreasein pH.

The decrease in pH creates variousproblems for different crops. Besidesbeing badly leached, the soil has goodinternal and external drainage, is wellaerated, allowing haematite to bind onthe soil particles which maintains thereddish colour. It has a good nitrogen cycle whichkeeps the plants alive and it is themost important nutrient needed for

growth.The report then outlines various

methods to be used to help increasethe nutrient availability in the soil.He recommends that farmers shouldhave soils classified

and mapped so that they knowwhat soil there is and so are aware ofthe implications and limitations in regard to maximizing production.

Sinakhokonke is passionate abouthis studies and is hoping to further hisstudies next year in Australia if he canfind sponsorship.

HOW time flies when you arehaving fun.Our winter holiday is alreadyover aweek old, but fortunate-ly it's not over yet.

At the beginning of the holi-day, the KZN Youth Choir heldtheir annual camp here at ourschool, and we trust that theyhad a most productive time astheystarted theirpreparationsfor Europe next year. Our Grade 10’s are eagerlyawaiting next week Wednes-

day when they fly to Germanyto stay with their exchangepartners and their families forfourweeks, while seeingmanynew sights and sharing newexperiences.

And while they do their last-minute shopping, and try topack it all into their suitcases(remembering to leave spacefor all the souvenirs), we trustthat the rest of our school fami-lyarehavingapeacefulandre-laxing holiday.

THE Bethal race was flown on Sunday, asthe weather forecast for Saturday was notin the birds favour.

Liberated at 8.45am, the yearlings cov-ered the 310km distance in a time of fourhours to the loft of Naicker Bros to recorda velocity of 1299 metres per minute.

Theyalso recorded thirdand fourthplac-es, with the Old Grizzle being the meat inthe sandwiches in second position.

TheOldGrizzle nearly hadaheart attackat 11.30 with the arrival of a pigeon. Loftstill closed, clock not ready in place, onlyto find that it was a bird from lastweek thathad decided to walk home.

In the open race after a 9.15 liberation, thewinner took threeandhalfhours tocov-er the same distance at a velocity of 1457meters per minute.

Once again the Naickers loft filled firstandsecondpositions, followedbyAttieJou-bertandtheOldGrizzle.Onceagainreturnswerenotverygoodbutwe fullyexpect themto return during the week - after spendingtime at the beach. Nextweek the race pointis Middleburg, approximately 398kms.
