" "On 30th June around 18:00 the Department of Protection Services, under the supervision of Mr Ndaba, attended a com- plaint that one of the Umvoti Municipal staff members, Sindi Ndawonde (night street sweep- er) was stabbed whilst doing her night duties at Maitland Street opposite Phuzimpilo tav- ern near the taxi rank. She was stabbed as she had warned two ladies not to break bottles on the street whilst she was busy try- ing to clean the street. On arriv- al of the Protection Services said two ladies fought and stabbed each other. Protection Services together with Field Se- curity assistance managed to rescue our staff member and took the culprits into custody for detention.A case was then opened against them. " UMVOTI MUNICPALITY ISSUES PRESS STATEMENT DROWNING TRAGEDY COURT CASE Bakkie driver, Phelelani Mchunu ac- cused of murder, appeared in the Greytown Magistrate's Court on Mon- day but the case was postponed to 5th August as his lawyer was not present. The charges of murder relate to the tragic death of five schoolchildren on May 12th when the vehicle they were travelling in left the road and lunged into a dam on a Rietvlei farm. In his first Court appearance in May, the State originally opposed bail but withdrew its opposition when the grieving parents stated they had no objections to him being granted bail as they were of the opinion the tragedy had been an accident. Furthermore they had agreed that Mchunu drive their children to their Mooi River schools. The tragedy occurred when early on the Monday morning Mchunu alleged- ly lost control of the bakkie which overturned and plunged into a sludge dam. Five of the 29 children on the back of the bakkie, died and the others were injured. This close up photograph, submitted by a con- cerned ratepayer, illustrates once again the ap- palling waste of water which leaks out of the SASKO reservoir, based in the grounds of Link- seed. This is the third time this year the Grey- town Gazette has published a photo and report on this and has to once again report, that the authorities, Umzinyathi District Municipality has taken no action to stop this monumental waste of water. On receipt of this photograph last week the Greytown Gazette forwarded it to the relevant official at Umzinyathi with a request fior a statement - no response whatso- ever at the time of going to press! In the last report published on 21st May, it was pointed out it was estimated up to 200 000 litres a day was gushing out of this resevoir to water the adjacent streets and verges! This means that since it started about six months ago millions of litres of this precious commodi- ty have flushed away into space. Enhlalakahle residents do have supply problems as a result. Ironical isn't it that Umzinyathi could spend such much time and effort on harassing Grey- town water customers with out of date claims through threatening phone calls and the ap- pointment of debt agencies, but have taken no action on this frightful and oft reported leakage! JUNE certainlywas an almostdry month, with just 6.6mmrecorded by the Pannar re-search department.

This is not the lowest in the40yearmean -amere2.5mmwas recorded in 2008/9. Intown, Grant Gifford recordeda few drops more - 7mm.

On the temperature front, there were quite a few frostymornings - the coldest minus3.8recordedon13June.Max-imumtemperatureduringtheday was way back on 1 Juneat 29.5.

Average minimum temper-ature for the month was 3.15andmaximum 21.61 which isnot bad for winter.

LAND users and farmers areadvised to exercise extremecaution to prevent veld firesduring winter states the De-partment of Agriculture andFisheries in a recent pressstatement.

Wildfires are a regular oc-currence in South Africa.

Every year during the fireseason, thenewscontainssto-ries of wildfires sweepingthrough the country.

Veld fires bring much dev-astation to communities interms of loss of livelihood, livestock, infrastructure andhuman lives. Everyone mustbe wise when dealing withopen fires and when operat-ing machinery.

The dryness of the vegeta-tion, coupledwith theeffect ofwinds, creates perfect condi-tions for runaway veld fires.During winter, veld fires areaserious threat to theagricul-tural sector, therefore farm-ers are urged to take note ofrisk-reduction measures byensuring that fire equipmentis, at all times, easily accessi-ble and in good condition.South Africa has large grass-lands, savannah and forestsand is particularly fire pronesince all the elements andsources for fire ignition andspread of veld fires are there.

The National Veld and ForestFire Act, 1998 (Act No.101 of1998)providesastatutoryob-ligation on all landowners todevelop firebreaksandplacesan onus on landowners to beprepared and equipped tofight a fire and to take all rea-sonable steps to stop thespreadof fire.Chapter2of theAct regulates the establish-ment, registration, duties andfunctioning of fire protectionassociations (FPA's). Theseassociations must deal withall aspects of veld fires, suchas the prevention and fire-fighting, where farmers canplay an active role in manag-ing and planning of fire man-agement as a collective, withco-ownershipof theriskman-agement process. It has beennoted that since the promul-gation of the Act, a concertedeffort has been made by pri-vate landowners to complywith the Act. However, allfarmers are encouraged, es-pecially in areas where veldfires are almost a yearly oc-currence, to participate fullyin the FPA's, and it would en-ableall tomitigatethegeneralriskof fire spread. For furtherinformation, please contactUFP Fire Protection officerCharles Haden at 076 1541090.

CONSUMERS need to be on highalert to avoid exploitation whenbuying chickens from some retail-ers across South Africa, as evi-dence gathered has shown thatthere is inadequate labelling onimported poultry, states SolMotsepe - South African PoultryAssociation (SAPA). SAPA haswarned that several retailersthroughout South Africa are con-traveningpackaging and labellingregulations on imported chicken.

According to theHealth Depart-ment, all food imported and soldin South Africa must be labelledwith detailed information to en-sure that consumers receive ade-quate information before pur-chase, so not to be mislead.

Motsepe says it is a require-ment, forexample, that the follow-ing is shown on the label: a briefdescription of the ingredients con-tained in the food is clearlyprintednext to the name of the product;a percentage breakdown of ingre-dients advertised; statement suchas “high fibre”, “sugar free” and“low fat”must be substantiated bya table; level of brining; a best be-fore, sell by, and use by date needto be shown.

While South Africa's abattoirsare regularly inspected by theHealth Department to ensure lo-cally produced poultry meets thehighest standards of food safety, the samedoesnot apply to the vastquantities of imports that flooddaily into our ports of entry.

Amass of imports, more than40containers of poultry meat, arriveat the Durban harbour daily -which makes the verification pro-cess impossible.

SAPA has been monitoring im-portedpoultrymeat for thepast12months through an independent
