REACH For A Dream will be activating the annual Reach ForYour Slippers campaign, ‘Slipper Day’, on Friday, 1 August.

The campaign calls for all to “reach for their slippers”, andto wear them towork or school to help a child with a life-threat-ening illness achieve their dream.

RICHARD Alcock, wellknown conservationist, environmentalist and en-tomologist of the Mhlope-ni ranch managementteam, has been amemberof the Ezemvelo HonoraryOfficer group for35years.

Ezemvelo KZN Wildliferecognised this achieve-ment by awarding himwith Honorary Life Mem-bership of the HonoraryOfficer Corps.

Richard joined the or-ganisation when it wasstill a part of the NatalParksBoard, andwhenhewas living and working inDurban.

There, he was involvedwith coastal conservationmatters, and remainedwith Honorary Officerswhen he and his familymoved to Mhlopeni in1984.

He is still actively in-volved with the HonoraryOfficer Group, where hisknowledge and experi-ence are valued by all themembers.

Richard says that hewould probably not havemade it this farwere it notfor the help and supportthat his wife, Joy, has al-ways given him, and saidthat he would like this tobe recognised.

Ezemvelo Honorary officer

DEAR madam editor,I write in reply to Mr Muntonezwi Khany

ile's vitriol loaded letter published in The Witness on July 18. Methinks you have lost theplot, Sir.

Drive around our town with your eyes openand you will notice that it is looking the bestit has in many a year, take note of a letterpublished by a visitor in The Gazette a fewweeks ago.

Yes, we do have problems in Greytown, but not to do with upkeep or moving ahead. We have newly tarred streets, those thathave not been tarred are having potholes etc.repaired.

The lawns have been cut properly for atleast three to four years now. The guttersare weeded and winter leaves are beingswept up.

As for your comments regarding the former mayor, we have Solomon Village where, were it not for the exmayor's interventionin the early stages, was heading for disaster.

Through him, and him alone, we got thestreets tarred, we are getting an FET College,I could go on and on.

Your concerns should be directed at uMzinyathi District Municipality who are responsible, together with their consultants, projectengineers and “plumbing employees”, for thehideous mismanagement of all water relatedprojects in this town and Kranskop, eMatimatolo, Keats Drift and others.

Look around and you will see the only ma

jor messes in town are the aftermath of the“plumbing team” not cleaning up after repairing a leak or fitting a valve etc. In closingMr Khanyile, I have to say that your letterhas an aura of politicking!

Brian WalkerGreytown

COMMENTLetter referred to by Mr Walker which appeared in last Saturday's Witness is as follows:

“I write to voice anger at Umvoti Municipalofficials who live the high life when Greytown’s municipal infrastructure is rotten andthe town is dirty and roads littered with potholes.

The town has become unattractive as aresult of negligence and corruption takingplace.

Former mayor Philani Mavundla promisedto revitalize the town's infrastructure andboost its economy, but that was not to be.

How is a dirty town supposed to attractinvestment when it so filthy that you wonderif the municipal officials exist?”EDITOR'S NOTE:

Dear Mr Khanyile! If you have the courage, and if you live in Greytown, please dome a favour and call at the Greytown Gazetteoffices so that I can take you on a tour ofthe clean streets of Greytown, the relativelyfew potholes, the building progress of Mavundla Mall which will provide much neededjobs etc.

Oh dear, Mr Khanyile

IT has become a popu-lar current trend to re-lease Chinese lanternsinto thenight skyat spe-cial events, such asweddings etc.

However during theUmvoti fire season, which ends on 31 Octo-ber, this is an extremelydangerous activitywhich could trigger offa series of fires.

The lanterns drift up-wards and slowlyacross the skyline untiltheir fuel is depleted, and the lanterns thendriftdown, landingany-where.

In Umvoti, the lan-terns could land on a

large dry grass area orin aplanation, resultingin potentially danger-ous wildfires.

Umvoti Fire Protec-tion Association pointsout the considerabledanger of this activityduring fire season andstate it will not be per-mitted during this time.

The UFPA expressesits appreciation to itsmembersand landown-ers for their future co-operation and under-standing in regard tothis.

CHRISTEL Brooks, in Grade 11 at ourschool, was selected to travel to Ireland inJuly.

She writes: During the July holidays, Irepresented the KKH Pony Club in Ireland. Our group of nine riders attended a week-long camp, riding two-hour sessions twicea day. Ending off the camp was a show, inwhich I placed first in my 1m derby class, second in 1m showjumping, and sixth indressage. After the camp, we went to ourvarious host families for four days, withwhom we toured Dublin and throughoutIreland. After the stay with our host fami-lies, we took part in an inter-branch tet-rathlon.On the firstday, weshot, swamandran, and on the second day we rode cross-country.

The South African team did well, andweall enjoyed competing in Ireland. It was awonderful experience; I learnt a lot and Iammost grateful that I was able to be partof such an amazing team, representing ourcountry abroad, chasing leprechauns and

finding gold.” We are proud of Christél andher achievements.

Thecelebrations thatbeganhere inAprilcontinued in Reutlingen, Germany, as theexchange learners planted a friendshiptree in front of the Wittum Hall at Bildung-szentrum - Nord - a twin of the one plantedhere in Hermannsburg to mark the tenthanniversary of the exchange between ourtwo schools.

In her address the Principal, Mrs Kern-Veits, acknowledged the warm spirit offriendship that characterises the exchangeprogramme, while a brass band and choirrounded off the ceremony.

Since then, our Grade 10s have beenbusy, doing a lot of walking as they exploreparts of Germany they never suspected ex-isted.

They have visited a textilemanufacturerand spent time playing with mechatronicsat the university, in addition to seeing thecountryside. We look forward to hearingmore about their adventures.

THE Consumer Protection Acthas given South African con-sumers many rights in takingaction against suppliers overpoor services or defectivegoods.

But when is it worth actuallypursuing a complaint and is itbetter than going to court?

Consumer Goods and Servic-es Ombudsman, Advocate Nev-ille Melville explains:

“Complaints such as a newcell phone which just stopsworking, goods paid for and notdelivered etc - previously youhad to go to a court of law to getjustice, but theConsumerGoodsand Services Ombud (CGSO)nowprovides a forum to resolvecomplaints quickly and afford-ably.

“Dissatisfied customers canapproach the CGSO, which willinvestigate and try to mediate asolution between all the partiesinvolved. If no agreement canbe reached, a formal mediationtakes place, where the partiesare invited to put forward theircases and amediator tries to fa-cilitate a mutually acceptablesettlement.”

He said that the size of finan-cial losses is not the only decid-ing factor that drives people to

take a complaint further.Thebenefitsof seekingasolu-

tion through an ombudsmanversus through the courts, isthat consumers are likely to getfaster resolution. The averageage of cases closed by the CGSOare 16 days, while the averageage of open cases are 74 days.

He says not all cases submit-ted to the CGSO involve mone-tary compensation - some com-plainants simply want whattheyseeas fair - suchasanapol-ogy or the system to be im-proved.

“The type of evidence youwould need to build your case

would include a till slip or proofof purchase, a high definitionphoto of the alleged defect orcopy of the brochure that thespecial was advertised in, forexample,” he said.

Expert witnesses may becalled in if necessary and in-spectors may be appointed.

“In the past, we have out-sourced the inspection ofcracked television screens todeterminewhether it was a fac-tory fault or the result of anover-enthusiastic Wii player!"said Melville.

The findings of the CGSO arenot binding on either party, butif the issue is not resolved by theombudsman, parties are in-formed of their right to ap-proach the National ConsumerCommission. The vast majorityof complaints, however, are re-solved at the Ombud level.

“While we cannot awarddamages, we can persuade asupplier todoso,”addsMelville.

Concludes Melville: "Media-tion is free and less intimidatingthan a court of law; you do notrequire legal representation;and you're far more likely tocome out with a win-win solu-tion.”

Issued by Bullion PR andCommunication.

What's the point of complaining?

SATURDAY’S race from Heidelburgproved to once again be a good one forthe Naicker family, with them havingthe only yearling home on the day andseven of their team of ten in the clock.

Attie Joubert on the other handfailed to clock a pigeon on the day such are the ups and downs of pigeonracing. The Old Grizle was once againbeaten by his protégé, M Lofts.

Maybe one day the worm will turn, but by the way the Old Grizzle's luckis running, the worm will be snapped

up by a passing sparrow!Liberated at 9.30am, the distance of

350 kms was covered by the only yearling in five and half hours at a velocityof 1060 metres per minute.

To cover the same distance after a10.15 liberation, the open birds took fourand three quarter hours to record a velocity of 1201 metres per minute, afterflying into a head wind.

A few birds slept out on Saturdaynight, but at daybreak on Sunday werewaiting at the traps to be let in.

Next Saturday the race point is Vrede,229 kms, basketting on Friday nights, once again hoping for good race. Results:
