Grand Hampton

Dear Grand Hampton residents,

Woo Hoo! Happy New Year! 2013….amazing!

I am ready to get it kicked off to a great start. I hope you are, as well. We will be working on more editorial to keep you informed of what is going on in the community and nearby. Any suggestions you may have, are always welcome. We think of many things, however, we cannot think of everything. Your participation with articles, editorial ideas, event notices, school news, scout news, charities, and lots of pictures are what make your newsletter the best.

We really enjoyed all of the entries that came in for the Christmas Coloring Contest. There sure are a lot of talented children in this community. Can you imagine how hard it was to pick just one? You would not want that job. If you

have a child who entered, please let them know that their drawing was viewed and we thought they did an excellent job. The winner's picture is displayed inside, along with the runner up pictures. Again, many thanks to our young artists.

As you know, next month is already Valentine's Day. I have a wonderful idea. Send in a "special message" for a loved one and we will post it in the February issue. 30 words or less please. There will be a page dedicated to these messages and your "special someone" can see if you included them. Email messages to [email protected] and make sure to state your name, community, and the message.

Happy New Year! May it be the best year ever for you!

Walking through the front gates and gazing down the long sandy path, you breathe in the refreshing peace and love that surrounds you. On the left is a young colt and his mom who were rescued a few weeks ago. Both of them now have a large pasture in which to roam and graze on hay. Sunny is spunky and always ready to play. Mommy Angel is gentle and knows that she and her babies are in a safe, loving place. RVR Horse Rescue has a team of volunteers who rescue abused and neglected horses so they can rehabilitate them and find loving homes for them. RVR rescues anywhere from two to five horses a month from deplorable conditions. Horses have been rescued from small chicken coops, or a crowded room full of barbed wire. Some horses have been dumped by

the side of the road, so hungry they can barely walk. Another had been chained up in a sand pit with no human or animal contact. Then there was the heart-wrenching situation last summer where starved ponies were left to die. In situations like this, RVR steps in and either rehabilitates these hurt, neglected animals or at the very least gives them love in their last moments of life, allowing these animals to die with dignity. One of the starved ponies did pass away, but his fellow ponies survived and have now been adopted to good homes. RVR, located on a forty-acre farm in Riverview, is a place of love and trust. “I have been volunteering there since last June. I, still to this day, am amazed at how the abused, starved and neglected horses are able to give so much love back

to the people around them,” said Karen Pagliro. “These divine creatures have been put through so much, yet they’re some of the most grateful and affectionate animals I have ever encountered. Not only do the horses gain a positive, supportive home, but I get to bring home the love these animals share with me.”RVR is a non-profit organization and is always in need of volunteers and donations. Please visit the RVR website and check out the story about Kimie. You will be taken on a journey of horror, hope and amazing love! www.rvrhorserescue.com To volunteer time, give supplies or monetary donations call Juliet 813-382-3235 or Kit 813-309-4443 Or email: [email protected] v

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DISTRICT (CDD)

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW A CDD is a governmental unit created to serve the long-term specific needs of its community. Created pursuant to Chapter 190 of the Florida Statutes, a CDD’s main powers are to plan, finance, construct, operate, and maintain community-wide infrastructure and services specifically to benefit its residents. A CDD is governed by its Board of Supervisors which is elected initially by the landowners, then begins transitioning to residents of the CDD. Like all municipal, county, state, and national elections the Office of the Supervisor of Elections oversees the vote, and CDD Supervisors are subject to state ethics and financial disclosure laws. CDD business is conducted in the “Sunshine”, which means all meetings and records are open to the public. Public hearings are held on CDD assessments, and CDD budgets are subject to annual independent audits. The cost to operate a CDD is borne by those who benefit from its services. Property owners in the CDD are subject to a non-ad valorem assessment, which appears on their annual property tax bill from the county tax collector and may consist of two parts: an annual assessment for operations and maintenance, and an annual capital assessment to repay bonds sold by the CDD to finance community infrastructure and facilities. The Grand Hampton CDD primary area of common responsibility is wetlands, water management and drainage and oversight of Conservation Areas. The CDD is professionally managed by Rizzetta & Company and inquiries should be directed to Greg Cox at (813) 933 -5571. Residents are cautioned to not feed or otherwise entice alligators; this illegal practice can encourage their dependence, create a danger to humans and pets, and threaten their survival. Conservation areas cannot be encroached upon to extend lawns or views! Please contact the CDD with any questions on protected conservation areas.

Winterfest is an event hosted by the Student Government and the CATS (Caring About Tomorrow's Students) tutoring program at Wharton High School every year. Every club at Wharton has their own booth or activity set up in the gym - they range from cookie decorating, to dance-offs, to arts & crafts and games. Students from Belle Witter and MOSI Elementary Schools come for the day, and are chaperoned by members of Student Government and the CATS tutoring program. The students and their chaperones make their way around the gym to all of the different stations throughout the day. The kids receive goodie bags, lunch, and

Be a part of Turner's Birthday Book Club! Turner's Birthday Book Club is a literary celebration of your

student’s special day. Students that join the club have the opportunity to donate a book in their name to the Turner Media Center. These books are pre-selected by Ms. Kurtright especially for Birthday Book Club members. Students will choose from brand new, hardcover books. A bookplate with the student’s name will be placed in the front of the book so that they and other Turner students can enjoy reading it for years to come. Birthday Book Club students will also receive the honor of being the very first student to check out the selected book from our library! A picture of the student with Ms. Kurtright will also be aired on our Turner Morning Show and (with parent permission) the Birthday Book Club webpage as a picture slideshow. Students can join the club again, from year to year. Happy Birthday and Happy Reading!

From Lanness Robinson, Director of Athletics : The winter sports season has begun and the 2012-2013 school year is off to a great start. We look forward to having many opportunities for success by our student athletes in the classroom as well as on the playing field. As we finish up the fall season, I want to send my best wishes for continued success to our teams and individual athletes who are competing in state series play!

In addition to our annual training, our coaches will continue the “Positive Coaching Alliance” training series this year. This nationally recognized program is designed to empower our coaches with tools to provide a high quality athletic experience which promotes sportsmanship, leadership, and positive life lessons. There are many people whose support and contributions make our athletic program successful. We would like to thank our student athletes, parents, coaches, volunteers, school personnel, officials and community supporters for their commitment to the athletics program. We look forward to the upcoming year and hope athletics will play an active part in your school experience.

Wharton's Winterfest, pairing high school students with elementary students (tutoring throughout the year). They hosted this Win-terfest party for the young students: games,

crafts, lunch and dancing at the end.

Some of the Wharton boys took a break from Holiday music to do the Gangnam Style dance for the group! Then they taught the little ones some of their moves.

this year for the first time ever their own t-shirts. The CATS tutoring program is in its third year of existence, and was started as a way for the leaders of Wharton High School to positively influence the lives of kids at underprivileged elementary schools that will eventually attend Wharton. Every week a team of students from Wharton travels to the two schools and tutors the children. There are four teams and they rotate every week, so each team goes once a month. The tutors serve as role models for the kids, and ideally when the students that are being tutored grow up and attend Wharton, they will become members of the program and be able to go back to their respective schools and tutor the children there. v

"I wanted to get involved with Relay for Life because of the close community it forms. Everyone has a cancer story and Relay brings everyone together because of those stories.

The 18-hour event recognizes the strides made in cancer research and brings hope to those battling the disease. It also recognizes those who won their fight, the caregivers and those who have passed away.

This year I am part of an exceptional committee and I believe the 2013 Relay for Life will bring the New Tampa

community even closer. It is astonishing to me how a disease so devastating can bring such a large group of people together for a unified cause. Being a part of Relay teams the past few years has been a life-changing experience for me."

-Lauren Poiley, a Wharton High School student

"I got involved in Relay for Life because I wanted to help organize an event that inspires hundreds of survivors to know that people from all over are going through the

same struggle. Relay for Life is essential for a community because everybody has a friend or family member that has gone through the up hill battle of cancer. As hope enters the heart of the community only then can cancer be defeated."

- Harold Shaw, a Wharton High School student

Mayor Buckhorn celebrated the grand opening of the New Tampa Nature Park on Monday, November 26th. The ceremony took place at the park, located at 17001 Dona Michelle Drive. “The New Tampa Nature Park is a great, active park. Children can explore nature and play on the zipline. The park also connects residents with miles of existing trails where they can walk, hike, and bike safely,” said Mayor Bob Buckhorn. "Our commitment to New Tampa is not just in roads and sewers, but it is embodied in our parks and

It seems local homeowners are unknowingly throwing away hundreds of dollars each year on home insurance. According to Steve Barry, theaverage homeowner in this areapays about $320 more per year thanthey may have to. “In 2011 alone, 496 local homeownerspaid a combined$158,720 in unnecessary insurancefees. I think a lot of people are getting overcharged without even knowing it,” says Barry. Barry, the owner of the Steve BarryGreat Florida Insurance Agencysays he made this startling discovery after his agency added the savings for clients in the area. “I always knew a lot of homeowners were paying way too much on their policies, but I never realized just how much until earlier this year,” says Barry. Local resident Carmen Fonseca found out firsthand. “Steve saved us $509 a yearfrom where we had our (previous)insurance,” reports Fonseca.

According to Barry, the averagehomeowner was overpaying by24% ($320 per year). Some localhomeowners were getting overcharged by as much as 67%. “I think it’s a shame that people arecommonly being misled by greedyinsurance agents who care moreabout making a big commissioncheck than saving their clients money. As a result, many homeowners arebasically flushing away hundreds ofdollars right down the drain,” saysBarry. With recent layoffs in the area andreal estate foreclosures dominatingthe headlines, Mr. Barry believes it’stime local residents receivedsome good news, “I think people aretired of being told that they can’t savemoney on home insurance. I knowthat for some people, saving $300or $400 per year could make a realdifference in their lives.” The Barry Agency, which pridesitself on “offering better coverage atlower prices” shops around more than 15 different providers to find

the best rates available. The agency was recently appointedby a select group of “A” rated carriersto carry out a competitive homeinsurance program that other agenciesin the area don’t have access to. Focused on a set of nine separatediscounts, the program offerstremendous savings opportunities tohomes built between 1983 and 2012and manufactured homes built after1995. Clients who have had their roofreplaced or completed a “WindMitigation Inspection” can alsoexpect to save hundreds in additionto the outrageously low rates that areavailable to local residents. “People who are looking to savesome money on their home insuranceare urged to call our office today. Allcalls are kept strictly confidential andtake around five minutes to complete, plus we even guarantee same daycallbacks,” says Barry. You can call 813-991-6969 to find out if you qualify. This program expires soon.
