The Appeal, supported by the Bristol Evening Post, is raising funds to providemore intensive care cots for sick babies as well as a dedicated FamilyAccommodation Unit close to the Unit.
Lauren Vincent, fundraising manager for the Cots for Tots Appeal is thrilled withthe support for the Appeal so far “Huge thanks to everyone who has donated tothe Appeal so far. We only launched the Appeal last October and thefundraising has really gathered momentum. Our mass skydive in April led by JohnWilkins to celebrate his 80th Birthday saw our brave fundraisers jump out of aplane to raise over £30,000 and over 100 runners in the Bristol 10k in Mayraised a further £20,000 towards our target of £1 million.”
The Appeal’s fundraising campaign will provide a new suite of four intensive care cots for the Special Care Baby Unit which will help the Unit to care for up to 150 extra babies every year. Georgia and Dimitrios Evangelopoulos whohave lived in Bristol for four years, spent several weeks in the Special Care BabyUnit when their son Georgios was born with complications at birth. Dimitrios said“We are very pleased that Georgios was so lucky to be treated by the staff at St Michael’s Hospital. The professionalism is superb; they looked after littleGeorgios and each day have helped to make him stronger. I would like to thankall the staff on behalf of my little boy for their exceptional efforts and care.”
The Appeal is also raising funds to provide a dedicated familyaccommodation suite so that parents can stay close to their sick or premature babies while they receive treatment.
Bristol Evening PostThe front page which launched the Cots for Tots appeal wasnamed front page of the year at this year’s Regional PressAwards. The Evening Post was in competition with regionalnewspapers from across the country.
The front page, with the headline "Help Us Grow" and featuring a photograph of prematurebaby Indra Crofts taken by Post photographer Jon Kent, was described by judges as "aconfident, haunting and dramatic way to launch a powerful campaign". They said: "Thelayout was simple and uncluttered and allowed the stunning picture and understated headlineto tell the story." All of us at The Grand Appeal would like to thank the Evening Post for theirwonderful continued support.

Andrea and Richard Fowler’s journey began when their twin baby girl Olivia was bornwithout a connection between her heart and her lungs. At just 10 days old Olivia was in theoperating theatre in the Bristol Children’s Hospital having life-saving open-heart surgerywhilst her parents and twin sister Elizabeth endured an agonising wait desperately hopingthat the surgery would be successful. And so began what will be the Fowler family’s longassociation with the cardiac care team of surgeons, consultants, nurses and specialist staffat the Bristol Children’s Hospital. Olivia survived the surgery and is fighting her way back
to full health. She will need surgery, treatment and care over manyyears from the cardiac team and will make regular trips to BristolChildren’s Hospital over the coming years.
Children like Olivia deserve the very best treatment and care possible.Olivia is lucky that specialist expertise to care for her is on-hand atBristol Children’s Hospital but there is more we can do. Medicalscience is advancing at a huge rate and we want to ensure thatbabies and children up to 18 years have access to the best and latestequipment available to diagnose and treat life-threatening heartconditions. We have a unique opportunity to buy the very latestequipment on the market which helps to detect, diagnose and manageheart conditions in children with breathtaking accuracy.
Olivia’s mum Andrea explains: “This equipment will give the consultants a more accurate picture of what’s happening within her heart withoutthe need for more invasive procedures. Obviously our goal, and that of her care team, is to ensure we do whatever we can to manage hercondition to extend her life and make it as full as possible. Any equipment that can aid this and keep her with us is a wonderful investment.”
With all our Heart...

Together we can make this happenThe Grand Appeal is raising £250,000 to buy the equipment and to put it in an area which is child-friendly and comforting forpatients and their families, but we need your help. With more than 12,000 children every year from all over Bristol, Bath, the SouthWest of England and South Wales coming to Bristol Children’s Hospital for specialist cardiac care, we know this equipment willhelp save lives. Help us to help patients like little Olivia and become a ‘Cardiac Guardian Angel’, give a one-off donation, hold afundraising event or do whatever you can to help.
