wants revenge. He provokes Lucia into confronting Manni on live TV,

LUCIA You’ll never hear from me again. COMMENTARY And then pays Doug to wreck Manni and Joe’s flat, and damage

Emma’s shirts. MANNI I know who’s done this, it’s Lucia. JIM (UPSET) These clubs were my eighteenth birthday present! PAUL Sorry mate... JIM I mean, who would do something like this? PAUL Oh come on - never beat me with those clubs anyway - you're

PAUL You been out to get a paper yet? JIM Yeah, it's on the sofa. JIM (CONT'D) They're all going crazy about Manni's performance yesterday.

Like he was some sort of hero. PAUL Yeah, well you can't believe everything you read in the papers,

remember? JIM I know, but he was pretty good. PAUL Not from where I was sitting. If I'd had the chances he had, I

would’ve scored at least four goals. JIM Where are you going? Aren't you going to help me tidy all this

up? PAUL Sorry, but I promised my mum I'd see her before training. JIM Well, how am I supposed to get to the ground? PAUL Why don't you ask your new 'hero' for a lift? Oh no, you can't. I

forgot, he can't drive! ALEX Oh, great!! Now the fun really starts. DAVINA What's wrong? ALEX Manni's picture's all over the newspaper. DAVINA It looks okay to me. ALEX What? Oh, yeah, but you haven't seen this bit yet. ALEX (CONT'D) Why do the press always make so much out of everything?

They're not going to leave him alone now. DAVINA Well, it's their job. And after all, he is your new star striker.

Over to You 2002/2003 Goal 8 Programnr: 02061/tv8

ALEX (SPITS) I just wish they'd leave him alone for a while. Give him some

space. I don't want him to worry about all this attention he's getting.

ALEX (CONT'D) Hello?... (ANGRY) No, Manni is not available to do an interview. JOE Do you really think it was Lucia? MANNI(SHRUGS) Yes, I’m sure. MANNI (CONT'D) Look. My new photos, they’re ruined. MANNI (CONT'D) She's the only one who could do this to me. MANNI (CONT'D) Do you think Emma'll be alright? After last night? JOE Yeah, she'll be fine. Just give her time, yeah. MANNI (ANNOYED) I only took this photo of her the other day, outside the hotel. JOE Is that one of her shirts? MANNI Yeah... (SUDDENLY REMEMBERS) Oh, her shirts! DAVINA Is Manni really that important to your chances now? ALEX He could be. But the press are going to make his life difficult and I don't

know if he can manage. DAVINA Well, if that's what's happening, you have to give the press what

they want.

Over to You 2002/2003 Goal 8 Programnr: 02061/tv8

4

ALEX(DUBIOUS) How do I do that then? DAVINA Well, you said yourself he's just a sweet kid. ALEX So? DAVINA So give them what they want. Give them Manni. If he's as

sweet and innocent as you say he is, then they'll probably fall in love with him.

ALEX It's a bit of a risk, though, isn't it? DAVINA Maybe. So why don't you give one of the television stations an

exclusive interview and then Manni could look at the questions before he has to answer them.

I could give my BBC friend a call... ALEX (EXCITED) Lots of publicity and not much risk. I love it. ALEX (CONT'D) You are brilliant. ALEX (CONT'D) I'm going in early. (TO PAUL) Hello son. I'll see you at training. Your mother is a genius. PAUL Well, at least he's pleased with someone in the family. DAVINA What's the matter, darling? PAUL Nothing. Someone just broke into the flat, that's all. DAVINA What? Did they steal anything? PAUL No, not really... (MUMBLES) They just smashed a couple of things up, but it was nothing

really. MANNI Look at these shirts! What is Emma going to say?!!

Over to You 2002/2003 Goal 8 Programnr: 02061/tv8

JOE Don't be stupid. It wasn't your fault. (EXAMINES THE SHIRTS) JOE (CONT’D) Look, that paint will wash off. JOE (CONT’D) Emma will know what to do. MANNI You're joking! We can't tell Emma about this. We've got to

clean them ourselves. JOE What about Kenny? You know, the guy who does the players'

kits at Rangers. He'll know what to do. MANNI Of course! JOE Hide them! JOE (CONT'D) It might be Emma! JIM ...Hi it's me, could you give us a lift… (SEES THE DAMAGE) Whoa! Looks like you had a party! MANNI No, we didn't. Lucia did all this. JIM And I thought our place looked bad. JIM (CONT'D) Our flat was broken into as well. They broke my golf clubs. MANNI Lucia did something to your flat as well? JIM(CONFUSED) Lucia? JOE (TO MANNI) I'm not sure it was Lucia. Well, she couldn't have gotten into

their flat. JIM Whoever it was, she or he wasn't after Paul. They didn't touch

any of his things. JOE Well, maybe it was some crazed fan. Ah, who knows?

Over to You 2002/2003 Goal 8 Programnr: 02061/tv8

6

MANNI A fan of Rangers Football Club? Please. You're joking, aren't you?

PAUL I hate being left out of the team. DAVINA You'll be all right for the last game of the season, won't you? PAUL Yeah right!! If dad picks me - that is! I'm their top scorer.

You'd think that would mean something. DAVINA Give your dad a break. He's under a lot of pressure at the

moment. (CHANGING THE SUBJECT) Anyway, how's Emma? PAUL Actually mum, Emma and I have finished, we've split up. DAVINA Oh, I see. Is that what you're really upset about? PAUL I'm not upset. I split up with her. DAVINA Right. Didn't she want to let you go? PAUL Yeah, something like that. Well, you know what girls are like. DAVINA Yeah, especially young ones like that. They can get a bit difficult. DAVINA (CONT'D) Never mind, I'm sure you'll do better next time. JIM You know, I think Joe's right. The vandal could've been a fan,

maybe he supports London United. JOE What, and you think he just hates us or something? MANNI I don't think a fan would do that. JIM It's more likely than Lucia isn't it? I mean she's the sort of girl

who's happiest when painting her nails. Right? MANNI I don't think you know Lucia very well! JIM She'd be crazy to do that to our apartments!

Over to You 2002/2003 Goal 8 Programnr: 02061/tv8

7

MANNI Yes, but she can be like that sometimes. Lucia is a very emotional woman.

JOE You're not wrong there. JIM I didn't realise she was like that, bit of a scary lady. JIM (CONT'D) ...And I thought she was really nice... MANNI I hope Kenny can get these clean. JOE When he's finished with them, you won't even notice. MANNI That's what I'm worried about!! JIM I'll catch you up in a minute. SOPHIE Morning. MANNI(ANXIOUS) Hi Sophie, where, where's Emma? SOPHIE After last night? I don't know, she was still in bed when I left. MANNI Maybe I should go and see her. JOE No, we've got training. MANNI Yeah, I suppose so. Okay. PAUL (TO JIM) Listen mate, I know how upset you were about the break-in. So

I've bought you something to cheer you up. JOE Let’s hear it for Manni PLAYER ONE Whoa. Nice clubs Jim. JIM (GOOD-HUMOURED) Oi! Don't touch they're mine.

Over to You 2002/2003 Goal 8 Programnr: 02061/tv8

PLAYER TWO Where'd you get them Jim? JIM Paul got them for me. Beautiful aren't they? PLAYER TWO Here lads, true love over here. COACH Come on, lads, let's get out there, eh. Come on. JOE Nice clubs by the way. PAUL What do you know about it? JOE Oh plenty, I mean a set like that's gotta cost a lot of money,

right? MANNI Yes, a lot of money. You must be a really good friend to Jim,

no? PAUL Yeah well, some of us know what being a mate is all about.

Right? JIM I think it was a really nice gesture. Paul knows how much my

clubs meant to me. PAUL Oh, shut up! JOE Yeah, nice one Jimbo. JIM What? What did I do? JOE You know, my kids are having a game after this. Do you want to

come? MANNI(RUNNING) Yeah okay. JOE Cool. They're still talking about the last time you came. Hey, if you come we might even win this time! JIM Come on!

ALEX Hold it, hold it. SOPHIE (TO ALEX) It's the same ankle. (TOUCHES IT) Does this hurt? PAUL I'll be all right. ALEX You said that last time. (TO SOPHIE) You'd better get him inside. PLAYER ONE Get Jim to kiss it better. ALEX Okay - tag-team sprints. Three teams of four. ALEX Hello. JOE (TO MANNI) I was reading that paper. It said your national coach is over in

Europe looking at a few players. MANNI Really? Did it say anything about me? JOE Can't really remember. Maybe it said something about him

coming to watch the last game of the season. MANNI What? JOE You could be playing in the World Cup! ALEX (STILL ON THE PHONE)Excellent thanks, yeah, bye. ALEX (CONT'D) Come on lads, move it! PAUL It's fine, honestly. SOPHIE Yeah, we'll see. Stay there. I better get some ice for it. SOPHIE I give up with you. You won't recover unless you do as I say.

10

PAUL I know how to look after my own body. SOPHIE Listen, you're young. You think you can push your body to do

anything and you'll bounce right back to health, right? PAUL Absolutely. And I don't need a lecture from you about it. SOPHIE I'm thinking about your future. Damage your leg now and you'll

be retired at 27. Do you want that? PAUL Just mind your own business. SOPHIE The fitness of this club’s players is my business, where you like it

or not COACH Good work today lads! Well done. Good work. JOE Listen Manni, I've got to run ahead, so I'll catch you at the park

later yeah? MANNI Yeah, okay. ALEX Manni, I want you to cancel everything for this afternoon. ALEX (CONT'D) I'd like you to do a television interview - at the BBC? MANNI What!? Really? What… what do I say? ALEX Just be yourself.., that'll do it. ALEX I don't want him to do this on his own. (BEAT/DECIDES) Where's Joe? SOPHIE He's already gone. His kids are playing. MANNI Oh no! I promised Joe I’ll go to the match.

Over to You 2002/2003 Goal 8 Programnr: 02061/tv8

SOPHIE Don't worry about it. The interview’s far more important. I'll explain to him.

ALEX But I still want someone to be with Manni. SOPHIE I can think of someone... SOPHIE Yeah, you'll look great in that Manni. I've got to go and see Joe.

You'll be okay with Emma. EMMA Of course he will. SOPHIE Good luck. MANNI Thank you, I'll need it. EMMA This one is okay. But, I think one of the ones at your flat would

be better. MANNI We haven't got time to go back to the flat. I'll wear this one, it's

okay. EMMA Well, if your sure. MANNI I, I don't know what to expect. I mean, what if they ask me

about last night. EMMA Just avoid the question. It'll be okay. MANNI Are you sure about this? EMMA Yeah, this one will look just as good as one of the other ones, I

guess. MANNI No, I meant about coming with me. It's just that, after

everything that happened last night. I wasn't sure if..... EMMA Manni, you don't need to explain anything. MANNI I, I know Emma. But I, I want to know if.... EMMA Let's talk about it later. You've got an interview to do.

12

JUDE You must be Manni, I'm Jude. JUDE We're a little bit short of time, so... EMMA Good luck. EMMA (CONT'D) Manni wait! EMMA (CONT'D) I'll be watching. JOE Unlucky Adam! Keep the pressure up! SOPHIE What's the score? JOE My team's losing four goals to three. What are you doing here? SOPHIE I thought it was about time I came to have a look at your other

team! JOE And, where's Manni? SOPHIE That's the other reason I'm here. He couldn't make it. Alex

organised an interview with the BBC for him. JOE Wow. He is moving up in the world. SOPHIE He wanted to say he was sorry he couldn't come. JOE That's cool. The kids'll be disappointed, but hey. Well played,

Eugene. INTERVIEWER Right, well our next guest is Manni, Alex Carter's newest signing

for London Rangers, and he's already proved a sensation, by scoring in his first two games....

INTERVIEWER Manni, welcome to the show. MANNI Thank you. It's nice to be here. INTERVIEWER And how are you finding life in England? And what about the

weather?

Over to You 2002/2003 Goal 8 Programnr: 02061/tv8

13

MANNI Well, it's not as hot as back home. But I haven't had to wear gloves yet so.....

INTERVIEWER Fitness plays a huge part in the game nowadays also and big influence is obviously publicity. Err, I believe this is you're first television interview.

MANNI I've done press conferences before but yes, this is my first TV

interview. INTERVIEWER And ah, which do you prefer? MANNI Well, I, I like them both, but I think I'm better at football. INTERVIEWER Ok, Manni, the national coach for your country's team, Jorge

Rodriguez is keen to see you in action. Don't you think eighteen is a bit young to play in the World Cup?

MANNI No. I think Michael Owen was eighteen when he played in his

first World Cup. But it is not about age, or experience, it's about whether you are good enough or not.

INTERVIEWER Absolutely, Pele was only seventeen. And I know Norman

Whiteside was seventeen also when he played with me in the Spanish World Cup.

INTERVIEWER But I also know, he was under a lot of pressure. Do you think

you're strong enough to cope with the mental and physical demands?

MANNI Well, it's not up to me. I know I'll have to play my best to prove

that I am worthy of being picked for the national team........ MANNI .....And then Jorge will decide. It was the same at London

Rangers with Alex Carter. JOE (TO PLAYERS) Get it up! SOPHIE It's not exactly the British Football League, is it? JOE Well, they're just kids, Sophie! SOPHIE I know. I just meant...

14

(TRAILS OFF) JOE (SNAPS) What? That I should be managing a bigger club? Or at least a

grown up one? SOPHIE No, I'm saying you should concentrate on your real career at

London Rangers. JOE What's the point? I'm not going to get off the bench and into

the first team anyway. SOPHIE Of course you won't if you don't train harder and really

concentrate on your own football. SOPHIE (CONT'D) Look at Manni for example. It was only a few weeks ago he

didn't even look fit enough to play in the reserve team. JOE Yeah, but Manni's still a kid. He's still got the desire and belief

to make it. JOE (CONT'D) What? What did I say? SOPHIE I was just wondering what happened to the kid in Joe. INTERVIEWER Well it can't be easy leaving your family behind. MANNI No, that's true. But, you know, they're very supportive. CHARLIE Are any rooms left to clean? CHARLIE (CONT'D) Maybe you should go and have a look. MANNI But, you know, they… I’ve made lots of friends now, so, it's not

so bad. INTERVIEWER Since Alex Carter became manager at Rangers, a lot of people

have said that it's a club who really look after their players. MANNI Yes, they arranged my ticket, they picked me up from the

airport, and they even let me stay in a really nice hotel for free, called the Millhouse.

Over to You 2002/2003 Goal 8 Programnr: 02061/tv8

INTERVIEWER But obviously you’re growing stronger all the time. MANNI Yes, we have a very good health… JIM Oi! That was going in! PAUL Stop complaining. At least you've got some new golf clubs. PAUL (CONT'D) This should be interesting. INTERVIEWER And, what about your relationship with Alex Carter, how do you

find him? MANNI Well, at first I found him very frightening, but he's been really

nice to me as a player and as a person. JIM (CHEERS) Yes! He's done it! PAUL Shut up will you! I'm watching this. JIM All right. All right! Take it easy! MANNI Paul and I have actually never played together. But he's still part

of the team like the rest of us. INTERVIEWER Some people have said you've taken his place. MANNI No, that's not true. I think Paul will get better soon, um… we

have to see. PAUL You'd better believe it! INTERVIEWER That's if he gets back into the team. PAUL Oh, I'll get it shall I? JIM Woohoo, look at it go! PAUL Okay, okay. How much do you want? INTERVIEWER And, what was your favourite goal? MANNI That I scored?

Over to You 2002/2003 Goal 8 Programnr: 02061/tv8

16

INTERVIEWER Yes. MANNI Um, every goal is special at the moment. I haven't scored enough

to just pick one. INTERVIEWER Yeah, what about footballing heroes, who were your heroes

when you were a boy? MANNI I used to like watching European players a lot, but I grew up

watching Rivaldo. He was always my favourite. EMMA Excuse me! Do you mind? EMMA (CONT'D) Oh. I didn't realise it was you. You're a designer…Xavier.. XAVIER Xavier Soyeux... EMMA(HOLDS OUT HAND, GRINNING)Hi, I'm Emma Mills. XAVIER (FORCED CHARM) Enchanté. PAUL You're joking! I'm not giving you that much money! DOUG Who do you think gives the newspapers their stories about the

club? PAUL What are you saying? DOUG(MENACING) Pay me or you'll wish you had. PAUL Are you threatening me? DOUG I suppose I am. EMMA Really? You're a Rangers fan? You should watch the interview

now, it's with Manni.

EMMA (CONT'D) (OF MANNI) He's a bit nervous but he's doing really, really well. I was going

to go in there with him, but they wouldn't let me in. We're close friends.

XAVIER I like his shirt. Did you buy it for him? EMMA(NONCHALANT) No, actually I made it. INTERVIEWER What do you think the sort of feeling you would have if you

scored in the world cup final? MANNI Amazing, it would be amazing. It's what I've wanted since I was

little. PAUL Okay, okay. I'll get you the money. I don't have it here, though. PAUL (CONT'D) Meet me tomorrow in the stadium car park. About eleven

o'clock, okay? JIM Who was that? PAUL No-one. JIM You were talking to someone. I heard you whispering. PAUL Look, it was no-one you know. Shut-up, I want to watch this. INTERVIEWER There are a lot of kids out here watching, so I must say, Manni

thank you very much for being here today and good luck on Saturday.

MANNI Thank you. INTERVIEWER And ah, some late news just in here. INTERVIEWER (CONT'D) Jorge Rodriguez has just announced that he will be

leaving Britain early today... INTERVIEWER (CONT'D) ... so that he can go and see a player in Germany. PAUL Say goodbye to playing in the World Cup, Manni.

JOE Alright guys, come in. Okay, look I know that was a difficult half, right, and that last goal, well, it was a surprise, but you've got to keep on fighting until the end, yeah. I know if you do that, I know you can do this. Okay? So let's go back out there and do it, OK. Alright, alright!

KIDS(SHOUTING) Yeah, come on!!!! EMMA Oh, you've finished! I missed the end of the interview, how did

it go? MANNI Who was that man? EMMA Oh that was Xavier Soyeux, the famous French designer! MANNI Oh yes. I've heard Lucia talk about him. He's very good, isn't

he? EMMA He saw you on TV wearing my shirt and wants to see the rest of

my collection! I've got to call him later to arrange it. MANNI Emma, that's great. EMMA I'm just glad the interview went well for you. Come on. JOE Alright. Go and get changed, yeah? SOPHIE Well done! I really enjoyed that. JOE Well maybe I'll let you come and watch again. SOPHIE I'm sorry if I gave you a hard time earlier. JOE So you should be! SOPHIE But what I said was important for you and the club. And I am

going to make you train harder. SOPHIE (CONT'D) Seriously though. I can see how much you care about these

kids. And I'm very impressed. If you can do this, you can do anything.

CHARLIE Hi Manni! I thought you did really well on television. MANNI Thanks Charlie. JOE Hey, you're back. How did it go? MANNI It went okay I think. MANNI (CONT'D) I'm sorry I couldn't make it to the game. JOE It's cool, don't worry about it. MANNI Okay. SOPHIE So when's this guy Xavier coming to look at your designs? EMMA Well, I'm not sure exactly, but he said sometime next week. MANNI I was thinking you know what you should do? We should put

on a fashion show. That way you could show off all your designs properly.

EMMA Sounds like a great idea Manni but I'm not sure it would work. SOPHIE Why not? There's a whole team of good-looking footballers

who’d love to be fashion models for a day! CHARLIE And I know a very exclusive hotel that would be big enough for

an event like that. EMMA Are you serious? You mean I could have it here? EMMA (CONT'D) Oh, thank you! I'm going to call Xavier right away. JOE (TO MANNI) Nice idea, buddy. JOE (CONT'D) Just one little thing...the paint on all those shirts? You haven't
