On Monday, 14 th October, teachers participated in a second session on Seven Steps to Writing Success. The program is based on the following pedagogical principles: Chunk learning – focusing on one specific skill, a small part of an overall goal, is a hugely effective teaching practice. Repetition makes muscle memory - practise makes permanent! We all know that you have to practice something to get better at it. Brainstorm first - write second - the pre-writing stage involves brainstorming, planning and organising. Generate 10 good ideas to find 1 great one. Verbal is vital - verbal language is critical for the development of literacy skills and students learn better when they are active participants, not just passively listening. Consistency creates change – Consistent expectations, goals, practice, language and feedback all form a solid foundation on which students can build with confidence. The program has seen students more engaged with creating texts and writing more creative pieces of work using the Seven Steps principles. The principles learnt are not only for narrative writing, but also for persuasive and informative writing. We look forward to seeing what writing the children create next.

Did you know that authors have 7 seconds to grab a reader’s

attention?

This year Glenelg Primary School has focused on improving writing

across the school and in making writing fun and engaging for

students. On Monday, 14th October, teachers participated in a

second session on Seven Steps to Writing Success.

The program is based on the following pedagogical principles:

Chunk learning – focusing on one specific skill, a small part

of an overall goal, is a hugely effective teaching practice.

Repetition makes muscle memory - practise makes

permanent! We all know that you have to practice

something to get better at it. Brainstorm first - write second - the pre-writing stage

involves brainstorming, planning and organising. Generate

10 good ideas to find 1 great one. Verbal is vital - verbal language is critical for the

development of literacy skills and students learn better

when they are active participants, not just passively

listening.

Consistency creates change – Consistent expectations,

goals, practice, language and feedback all form a solid

foundation on which students can build with confidence.

The program has seen students more engaged with creating

texts and writing more creative pieces of work using the Seven

Steps principles. The principles learnt are not only for narrative

writing, but also for persuasive and informative writing. We look

forward to seeing what writing the children create next.

Materials and Services Charges 2020 At the Governing Council meeting next Monday night, October 28th, there will be a discussion about the Materials and Services Charges for 2020. The recommendation that the Finance Committee is taking to the meeting is that there is an increase in the charges of $10 to cover the increase in pricing over the last year and a wellbeing incursion. Parents are very welcome to come along to the meeting at 7pm in the staffroom next Monday to be part of the discussion before the recommendation is voted on. Alternatively, you can put your thoughts in writing to Clinton Jury, the Chairperson of Governing Council and drop it into the school by the end of the school day on Monday. Your thoughts will then be shared at the meeting.

Early Years Teacher of the Year At the Public Education Teaching Awards. Sharnie Jamieson, year 1 teacher in room 27, was a finalist and won the Early Years Teacher of the Year Award.

Congratulations to Sharnie on her win. She has been at Glenelg for 2 years now and has brought with her some great ideas for literacy that she has shared and this has supported all teachers in their teaching programs.

Writer of the week

In Term 4 we will continue our Writer of the Week award, with the winner announced at assembly each fortnight. Our school writing journey this year has seen the students create wonderfully creative and engaging pieces of writing. We look forward to seeing the submissions this term!

My holiday pleasure My eyes fluttered open. I say in my bed for a minute or two, taking in the light creeping through my blinds. I slowly looked at my clock. 10:35?!?! I jumped out of bed and ran to put on my uniform. By the time I had found my uniform and put it on, it was 10:55, recess in school would be starting. I ran around the house like a maniac, desperately brushing my hair along the way. It was weird my parents weren’t here, so I assumed they were going to the shops. I grabbed the bread from the pantry, only to find those two yucky pieces on the ends of bread. I stared at them for a second, then quickly decided it would have to do. I shoved them in the toaster and when they were down, slathered Nutella on them and furiously chomped on it. I turned around to see my parents in the doorway, my mum in a dressing gown and the cheap Costco pajamas on dad. My dad hazily said “Don’t you have holidays?...” I stared at him and went as mum’s dressing gown.

Chess News

Chess news – Gold at last

On Wednesday the 25th of September, 11 girls from years 6 and 7 participated in an all-girls chess tournament.

The students who participated were; Chloe, Dakota, Fallon, Skyla, Zoey Jasmin, Emilia, Sophie, Eva, Evelyn and Kayla.

The girls participated in seven rounds of chess competing against different schools’ girls. Once all the rounds were finished Evelyn and Zoey finished with a perfect score of seven wins.

At the end of the day Glenelg won the overall tournament and the girls were really happy.

The medal winners were; Jasmin, Kayla, Dakota, Zoey, and last but not least the overall girl champion Evelyn who took home the trophy.

By Chloe and Jasmin

We would also like to thank Evelyn’s mum. She provided sponsorship for this team which paid for our bus and brought the cost down so everyone could attend.
