Glenelg Catholic Parish 23rd April 2017 SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER. Paradox and Our Faith Lives We live in a society where we demand certainty. How can we be in control if we doubt? To doubt, I suggest, is regarded as a sign of weakness. And so doubt is something we wish to avoid. We want to feel safe and secure and in control. And yet, paradoxically, without doubt, our faith cannot grow nor can we deepen our relationship with God. It seems to me that doubt, that movement out of our comfort zone, is the pathway to growth. Easter and the Paschal Mystery present us with the paradox and mystery of Christ’s suf- fering, death and being raised. It calls us to subdue our Western mind formed by Greek logical thinking and adopt an Eastern mindset which is much better able to embrace paradox. It calls us to live with the questions rather than to search for answers. In today’s Gospel we are presented with the doubting Thomas. Thomas really is the model of most of us. His logical mind demands answers prior to believing. He is determined not to be taken in, standing for his right not to believe anything until he has solid evidence. When Jesus reap- pears later in the locked room, Thomas is confronted and is transformed. Thomas does not physically probe the wounds of the Risen Christ. He does not get his physical verification, but he does come to belief. The consistent message in John’s Gospel is that believing is not a matter of physical observation, but realising spiritual truth. It is in the community of believers, enlivened by the presence of the Risen Christ, that Thomas comes to know Jesus at a level that had eluded him when he knew Jesus in the flesh. But this same Jesus belongs now, not just in our world, but also in a different world. Thomas’ faith has been challenged and is now willing to live with the mystery and the questions this poses He has put himself on the path where his faith can grow. Our preparedness to live with the questions of the mystery is the change that changes everything. It makes love, mercy, patience and forgiveness possible. Deacon Pat Edwards.

SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER.

Paradox and Our Faith Lives

We live in a society where we demand certainty. How can we be in control if

we doubt? To doubt, I suggest, is regarded as a sign of weakness. And so

doubt is something we wish to avoid. We want to feel safe and secure and in

control. And yet, paradoxically, without doubt, our faith cannot grow nor

can we deepen our relationship with God. It seems to me that doubt, that

movement out of our comfort zone, is the pathway to growth. Easter and

the Paschal Mystery present us with the paradox and mystery of Christ’s suf-

fering, death and being raised. It calls us to subdue our Western mind formed

by Greek logical thinking and adopt an Eastern mindset which is much better

able to embrace paradox. It calls us to live with the questions rather than to

search for answers. In today’s Gospel we are presented with the doubting

Thomas. Thomas really is the model of most of us. His logical mind demands

answers prior to believing. He is determined not to be taken in, standing for

his right not to believe anything until he has solid evidence. When Jesus reap-

pears later in the locked room, Thomas is confronted and is transformed.

Thomas does not physically probe the wounds of the Risen Christ. He does

not get his physical verification, but he does come to belief.

The consistent message in John’s Gospel is that believing is not a matter of

physical observation, but realising spiritual truth. It is in the community of

believers, enlivened by the presence of the Risen Christ, that Thomas comes

to know Jesus at a level that had eluded him when he knew Jesus in the flesh.

But this same Jesus belongs now, not just in our world, but also in a different

world. Thomas’ faith has been challenged and is now willing to live with the

mystery and the questions this poses He has put himself on the path where his

faith can grow. Our preparedness to live with the questions of the mystery is

the change that changes everything. It makes love, mercy, patience and

forgiveness possible.

Alpha Program

“Alpha is the most marvellous tool for

evangelization. Alpha serves to bring

faith alive and to me that is the most

important thing in the world, because if

a person's faith and belief in Jesus

becomes 'real' as opposed to 'notional'

then you see the whole of life

differently" Thomas McMahon,

Catholic Bishop of Brentwood

We have people who have registered

because someone has extended to them

an invitation to join our Alpha program

which commences on Wednesday, 26th

April. You can support Alpha by doing

this, inviting a person you know who

may be curious about Jesus Christ or is

looking for meaning in their life. Please

continue to pray for Alpha in our joint

parishes, for the participants and the

leaders.

East Timor Seminarian Sponsorship Programme – 2017

The Brighton, Hallett Cove, Glenelg and St Anns Parishes East Timor Seminarian Sponsorship Programme committee thanks our Parish communities for the financial

support given to the programme during the past few years.

The programme is in a good financial position at the start of this year to maintain the

level of support that has been achieved during the last couple of years.

At this stage, we are waiting for the final lists of seminarians in the Major, Propaedeu-

tic and Minor Seminaries requesting sponsorship. Once the requests have been final-ised money will be transferred to East Timor.

We are particularly pleased to continue the sponsorship of Agostinho Babo who is in his seventh and final year of study at the major seminary. We have had the great pleasure of sponsoring Agostinho from the beginning of our programme and now

eagerly wait for him to complete his studies and prepare for his Ordination to the Priesthood.

Attached is his statement of appreciation for the support our Sponsorship Programme and Parish Communities have given him and his family during his studies in the seminaries in East Timor. It’s exciting to think that we have been such an integral

part of his journey to the fulfillment of his hopes to be ordained into the Priesthood and to serve his communities.

We are equally excited to have the opportunity to support many others in their studies and preparations to work in and serve their communities.

The committee thanks our parish communities for the financial support given to the

programme and encourages you to continue your generous support for the seminari-ans and their families in East Timor.

THANKS GIVING LETTER

Dear Parishioners,

Peace in Christ!

Firstly, I want to greet all of you with my best regards.

I was attending two years in Middle or Propedeutic Seminary in Maloa Ailok-Iaran

to study about Spirituality life. In 2010 I received soutane (Batina) and I passed to Major Seminary to study philosophy and Theology seven years at the Major Semi-

nary. Three years I study philosophy and I have completed philosophy study in 2014. After that I went to practice pastoral in parish for a year. In the parish I have

helped parish priest to visit the sick, to teach in Senior High School, to help the staff of Parish Finance Administration especially to arrange the documents of Baptism, Matrimony and Chrism or Sacrament of Confirmation. In December 2015 I have

finished my pastoral practice in parish. Last year I came back from parish to contin-ue my Theology study on sixth level (6 years) of Theology. This year, I am writing

my Theology thesis to finish my study in Major Seminary.

I personally give a lot of thanks for your generosity and kindness during nine years, begun from 2008 until now sending the monies to pay my school fees every year. I

will keep all of you in my daily prayer. Your support and kindness I won’t forget these in my life. These good that all of you had done for me, God will repay you in

heaven, and God has written down in your list of goodness and kindness in heaven.

I myself hope that future of God choose me to be a priest, I will go to celebrate mass with you in Adelaide Diocese, especially with Monsignor Dempsey and Fr John Herd

and also the parishes which parishioners collect money and send to my school during my study in Seminary. But I need more your prayer for me so that I can be firm in my vocation even I face many difficulties in this way that I choose.

I hope that our prayer will hear by Lord Almighty God. Once again thank you very much for all kind-ness and support. Let us hand in hand each other to prayer each other be success in all activities. God bless all of us! Best regards
