Glenelg Catholic Parish July 6th 2014 Comfort and Healing Love. “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” This is possibly one of the most beautiful and well quoted verses of Scriptures. If ever we were in search of proof of a relational God then this would be it. Jesus does not promise that by following him our lives will be easy, only that he will be there to hold us in our hours of distress. As we watch our children grow, so often, we can see the mistakes that they will fall headlong into, but we cannot stop them. It is heartbreaking for a parent to watch but all we can do is sit back and wait so that when it all falls apart we are there to help them pick up the pieces. How often have we held our children close soothing them and comforting them in their times of distress, whispering words of comfort and love until they can move forward from their hurt. It is exactly this that is being offered to us by our God the comfort and healing love that only one who loves us above all else can give. It is not always easy to surrender our burdens to God but this is what is being asked of us and when we can unconditionally ‘give it all to God’ we find a peace like no other. This piece of Scripture brings to mind the Poem ‘The Footprints in the Sand’ - "Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you, You would walk with me all the way; But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, There is only one set of footprints. I don't understand why in times when I needed you the most, you should leave me. The Lord replied, "My precious, precious child. I love you, and I would never, never leave you during your times of trial and suffering. When you saw only one set of footprints, It was then that I carried you”. This Scripture is reminding us that we do not walk alone and when we become too weary on our Journey we must surrender ourselves and our troubles completely to God and he will carry us through those awful times. This week when life feels like it is about to overwhelm us, remember the words of St Augustine- You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our

July 6th 2014 Comfort and Healing Love.

“Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I

will give you rest.”

This is possibly one of the most beautiful and well quoted verses of

Scriptures. If ever we were in search of proof of a relational God then this

would be it. Jesus does not promise that by following him our lives will be

easy, only that he will be there to hold us in our hours of distress.

As we watch our children grow, so often, we can see the mistakes that they

will fall headlong into, but we cannot stop them. It is heartbreaking for a

parent to watch but all we can do is sit back and wait so that when it all falls

apart we are there to help them pick up the pieces. How often have we held

our children close soothing them and comforting them in their times of

distress, whispering words of comfort and love until they can move forward

from their hurt.

It is exactly this that is being offered to us by our God – the comfort and

healing love that only one who loves us above all else can give.

It is not always easy to surrender our burdens to God but this is what is being

asked of us and when we can unconditionally ‘give it all to God’ we find a

peace like no other.

This piece of Scripture brings to mind the Poem ‘The Footprints in the Sand’-

"Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you, You would walk with me all

the way; But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life,

There is only one set of footprints. I don't understand why in times when I

needed you the most, you should leave me. The Lord replied, "My precious,

precious child. I love you, and I would never, never leave you during your

times of trial and suffering. When you saw only one set of footprints, It was

then that I carried you”.

This Scripture is reminding us that we do not walk alone and when we

become too weary on our Journey we must surrender ourselves and our

troubles completely to God and he will carry us through those awful times.

This week when life feels like it is about to overwhelm us, remember the

words of St Augustine- “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our
