Now that you are all becoming amazing teachers of your own children , I thought I would share our schools educational direction using the PLC initiative and how you can support that with your childs learning. The teachers continue to use the elements of effective PLCs in the online environment to ensure students have learning tasks that are tailored to the next step in each child s learning and that students are not repeatedly doing tasks around concepts they already know or tasks that are so far above their level that they are not able to access any learning. You will recognise that your child is learning something new if he/she is making a few mistakes and continual small improvements in their reading, writing and maths and will need to continue practising the new learning with spaced revision until their goal/s (or the Learning Intention) have been achieved. Year level teams (PLCs) are currently meeting daily on WebEx to discuss student learning outcomes and the next steps for each group of students. In order to provide point of needlearning successfully in the online environment, teachers need to optimise their interactions with students and listen to student feedback carefully as they do not have the usual classroom cues to look out for. If you have been involved in any of your children s conferences and have been tempted to provide answers for them, you may have noticed the teacher encouraging responses from the students. This gives the teacher more accurate feedback about your childs learning needs and future tasks that need to be set to address their misconceptions. Additionally it is important that your child completes submitted work independently so that the teacher is getting an accurate picture of their needs for that concept. Of course supporting the teaching of a concept for your child is a positive step, and quite different to simply telling them the answer or writing for them. When leaders and teachers do our Learning Walks and Talks into classrooms to monitor the progress of our PLC goals, these are the questions that we ask students: >What are you learning? (Does the student know their Learning goal or Learning Intention?) >How will you know you have been successful? (Does the student know the Success Criteria?) >How can you improve? >Is the work too easy, too hard or about right? (The student will make a few mistakes when learning is new.) >Where do you go for help when you have a question? (Is the student reading instructions and examples, using vocab checklists and codes, or working out a way to help themselves – agency.) Much of the rationale for our PLC work has been provided by Professor John Hattie s Visible Learningframework which is well-known among educators. It has been used in schools across Australia for years now to deliver consistent, evidence-based learning outcomes and is the culmination of….. more than 90,000 studies and 300 million students around the world. Visible Learninghelps educators to not only structure a lesson effectively (e.g. through learning objectives and success criteria), but also understand the extent to which different factors influence a student s education (e.g. socioeconomic background, teacher efficacy and so on).Wade Zaglas In The Classroom, Opinion, Top Stories The Age Other aspects that Hattie has studied which have a significant effect on learning include parental involvement (.43) and particularly parental expectations (.70). Having high aspirations for your children and supporting them in the home/school partnership will have significant benefits, however it needs to be done in a positive way that builds a childs agency and love of learning. MESSAGE FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

Caring Hearts, Caring Minds, Caring Actions

Congratulations are in order!

Congratulations and thank you to everyone for another

week of learning from home.

Our staff have been impressed with the students who

continue to display many behaviours including our

school values of Personal Best, Resilience and

Responsibility. The skills developed over this period of

time, will continue to support our children with life-long

skills which can be carried through their future learning

and life.

It has been fantastic to see the assistance provided by parents while our students are

working from home. We appreciate the support from families and ask that our students

are being given the opportunity to complete the work independently as much as

possible. This will continue to develop their skills with problem solving and resilience.

Mental health and wellbeing check-in

Just as you set aside time for physical exercise, it is important to make time each day to check in

on your child’s mental health and wellbeing.

As your child adjusts to their new routine and not being able to see their friends in person, it is

important to be understanding of their feelings of frustration, anxiousness and even anger –

every child will react differently.

To support your child, use these mental health and wellbeing check ins to:

Provide an opportunity to talk about how they feel and listen to what they say

Identify one or two things they could do to address what they are concerned or angry

about

Ask how they are going, whether they are finding it easy or hard to learn remotely, and if

there is anything they’d like your help with.

If you have any other concerns about the health and wellbeing of your child, please remember

to contact your child’s classroom teacher who can direct you to further support as needed.

Enjoy the weekend.

Regards, Lisa

P.E video clips from students Part 1 (Simply the Best!)

Mr G has received a number of video clips from students showing what they are up to during remote learning for P.E. He has also enjoyed providing these students with feedback and is so impressed with their enthusiasm and commitment that they've shown towards P.E. during this time.

Following is a link to a compilation of some of their videos. There is enough footage for a Part 2 and 3 so stay tuned for further video clips!.....

The importance of contributing in class during remote

learning By Sam V (6B)

Obviously in these times learning is a little bit different and probably harder for most people. This though, can be an experience to improve our contribution to class talk and questions that are put out during Webex meetings. If we practise contributing to discussions when we go back to school normally we can use our skills and be able to put your own ideas and thoughts into class discussions, which in the end can improve your overall learning experience and help you to have better social skills going forward.

Everyone Can Be a Leader By Claire B (6B)

Use Initiative Do extra jobs without being asked Ask if people in your family need help Offer to help your siblings with their school work

Random Acts of Kindness

Make someone their favourite drink Write or draw a happy note to people in your family Give people a big smile when you see them!

Learning

Have a clean and organised workspace. Have everything ready. Set alarms for meetings with your class and teacher Use your diary to plan Think about what the point of what you’re learning is (the Learning Intention/Success Criteria)

Solving Problems

Talk reasonably about the problem (show others you can stay calm!) Go for a walk, have a break, do a hobby Look for and suggest solutions

FRIDAY 8TH May — Do it For Dolly Day Friday 8th of May is Do it For Dolly Day. This year,

they hope the day will not only honour Dolly’s memory, but make sure those important

conversations continue around bullying and online safety, and how kindness and compassion can

change the outcome of a day. We encourage parents and carers to engage in these discussions with their

children.
