ACTING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear families,

Welcome back! I hope you have all had the opportunity to spend time with your families over the term holidays. Whilst Julie is in America on her well earned Long Service Leave, I am stepping into the role for the next 4 weeks. Please feel free to see me if needed (or if you just wanted to pop in and say hello).

Minister Visit It was an eventful day today with a visit from the Education Minister and Deputy Premier, James Merlino and the member for Macedon, Mary Anne Thomas. They toured the school looking at the current buildings and received a briefing on the proposed redevelopments. Thank you to the school captains, Isaac and Darcy as well as staff and school council members for their relevant contributions.

Please be aware that under no circumstances is a parent to confront another student about an incident. This will not be tolerated at Gisborne PS.

2018 STUDENT PLACEMENTS We are now taking student placement requests for 2018. Our school undertakes a comprehensive grade placement process each year during Term 4. This includes ensuring that a balance of behavioural, academic and social needs are present in each grade . Multiple teacher meetings take place and many hours of work is undertaken to achieve the best possible placements for our students. Parent requests form one component of this process. Our guidelines for requests include: · Requests must be made in writing by the 27th of October, addressed to Lisa Maxwell and Julie Soutter. · Requests for specific teachers will not be taken. · Requests regarding particular student combinations that may disadvantage your child’s learning and wellbeing will be

considered, however requests for particular students to be together will not. · If there are particular traits or issues that need to be considered that we are not currently aware of, please advise us of

strategies or approaches that work best, so that we can ensure a good match is made for your child. 2018 Grade placements will be announced in December. We thank our community in advance for their understanding that student placement decisions are a comprehensive process and considerations for the best for all students are taken into account.

PARENT PORTAL ONLINE PERMISSION This term, permission for school activities will need to be granted via the Sentral Parent Portal.

WALK TO SCHOOL This year we are participating in Walk to School 2017 which runs from October 9th – November 3rd. It is a fun and easy way

for students to build healthy habits for life. Walking, riding or scooting to and from school instead of driving is great for our

health, environment and community.

We are asking students to walk, ride and scoot as many times as possible during the Walk to School period. They don’t have

to walk the whole way to school, you could drive part way to or from school and walk the rest. Each class is keeping a tally of

how many students walk, ride and scoot to and from school each day. At assembly each week we will announce the class

with the most walks, rides and scoots from the previous week. There will be spot prizes awarded to students who have

walked, ridden and scooted and had this marked off on their class tally.

Other fun activities for Walk to School 2017 are:

Crazy Sock and Shoe Day – This will be held on Thursday 26th October

Design a Walk to School poster

Decorate a shoe, scooter or bike template to be displayed around our school

Healthy breakfast for any students that participated in Walk to School 2017 (date to be advised shortly)

Canteen News Message from our new Canteen Manager

Hi Parents and Students, my name is Dee Spiteri and I'm very excited to be appointed as the new Canteen Manager at

Gisborne Primary. I've been a regular volunteer in the canteen over the past few years and really loved it, so I'm very

thankful for this opportunity. I would also like to thank Jane Davies for all her support and guidance in helping me settle in,

it's truly appreciated.

Please don’t hesitate to come & say hello, and we are always looking for enthusiastic volunteers!

Looking forward to a fantastic Term 4!

Dee

Unfortunately, Lemonade Focus water is not available for 2 weeks. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Please note: should we not have enough helpers on canteen day, we will be unable to provide over the counter sales at recess and lunchtime. If you have a Working With Children Check and would like to help out, please contact the office.

Reading at home It is very important to ensure your child continues to read at home. Even once your child is capable of reading independently, to assist with developing fluency, comprehension and expression, it is important they read aloud to a parent and discuss the text together. Please see the graphic opposite. Thank you for your continued support at home for your child’s education.
