Parkinson’s Support Group Meeting: Thursday, February 22, 2018 (Always on 4th Thursday of the month!) 2– 4 pm 2423 Williams Drive, Georgetown,Texas. Georgetown Health Foundation meeting room. January Meeting Summary We had another GREAT meeting on January 25th with 121 members in attendance. Dr. Salima Brillman, Movement Disorder Specialist from at the Parkinson’s Institute & Clinical Center in Sunnyvale, CA presented to us on the topic of “Neurogenic Orthostatic Hypotension” (nOH). She was joined by Keith and Linda Hall from Boston, MA who are nOH Patient/Caregiver Ambassadors. They jointly presented on this disease state with Dr. Brillman sharing about the symptoms, causes and treatment. Dr. Brillman described Orthostatic hypoten- sion (OH) as a sus- tained drop in blood pressure that occurs after standing, and it may happen for a variety of different reasons. When OH is associated with nervous system disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease (PD), multiple system atrophy (MSA), or pure autonomic failure (PAF), it’s called neuro- genic orthostatic hypotension (nOH). People living with nOH may experience symptoms when they stand, such as light- headedness, dizziness, or the feeling that they are about to black out. She suggested some lifestyle changes such as: Drinking more water Increasing salt in your diet Avoiding carbohydrate-heavy meals, caffeine, and alcohol Wearing compression stockings or an abdominal binder Avoiding standing still for prolonged periods of time Elevating the head of your bed Slowly rising when standing Using caution when walking or changing positions if you feel dizzy Getting regular exercise After Dr. Brillman’s presentation Keith and Linda Hall, shared how nOH had affected them and the impact on their life as a patient and care partner. Keith, who has Parkinson’s was very open to share his challenges and it pro- vided an atmosphere for many questions from our members. It was a great meeting with again a large group of attendees.’ The Hall’s were very kind to stay longer after the meeting to answer questions, along with representa- tives from Lundbeck. I would like to thank Christine Reed for the refreshments and for coordination in bringing in the speakers. And, a BIG-O-TEXAS thank you to Dr. Brillman and to Keith and Linda Hall. Tips for Parkinson’s➣ Most people with Parkinson’s disease

(PD) will experience change’s in speech, voice and swallowing at some pointduring the course of the disease. Thesame PD symptoms that occur in themuscles of the body — tremor, stiffnessand slow movement – can occur in the muscles used in speaking andswallowing. This can cause the following issues:

✓ Soft voice

✓ Mumbled or fast speech

✓ Loss of facial expression

✓ Problems communicating

✓ Trouble swallowing

➣ A referral to a Speech-language pathol-ogist — healthcare professionalstrained to evaluate and treat peoplewith speech, voice, language, memoryand swallowing problems— could bevery beneficial. Read more here:http://www.parkinson.org/sites/default/files/Speech-Swallowing.pdf

➣ Here are a few tips to remember while eating:✓ Sit upright at a 90-degree angle.

✓ Tilt your head slightly forward.

✓ Lessen distractions while eatingand drinking, stay focused

✓ Don't talk with food in your mouth.

✓ Eat slowly.

✓ Cut your food into small pieces, andchew it thoroughly.

✓ Keep in mind that you may need toswallow two or three times per biteor sip.

✓ If food or liquid catches in yourthroat, cough gently or clear yourthroat.

✓ Concentrate on swallowing frequently.

✓ Use thickeners is to make all liquids, including beverages andsoups, a thicker consistency that isless likely to cause aspiration.

✓ Consult/Referral to a speech thera-pist for swallowing evaluation!
