Annyong Haseyo!

April is the season of celebrating blossoms in South Korea. We have included, in this edition, several cities for you to enjoy the season. First week of April is also the best time to enjoy blossoms around the island, either by car, walk or the best way : hike!

In the midst of living in this beautiful island, regularly we also say goodbye to some of our good friends due to the project finishing. Even for anyone who has been living the expat life in other locations, parting never really an easy thing to do. Furthermore, the experience could be even harder for our children.

Third Culture Kids, our kids, may benefit from this experience, which you will notice later. Whilst in the beginning, you probably only see the struggle and confusion they may display during the adaptation time. Give ‘em time, give yourself time.

For my family, South Korea is the 6th country we have lived in during the past 10 years, only 2 of them were less than a year. Of those places, I would say we were the long-term tourists rather than residents. Don’t remind us about the packing and un-packing :))

We would rather remember the joy and the good memories rather than the challenges and the bad memories from our journey together.

Even so, my children went to school and tried to find some way to cope and adapt. Our favourite activity is exploring: finding what we like to do and places we like to be. And Geoje, with the limitation it has, also offers a lot. Beside, we also have GIC!

After more than 2 years living in Geoje, hiking will now be on our agenda. (better late than never, right?)

What about you? what is your favourite pastime in Geoje, fancy to try a new hobby? Share your stories and thoughts, we will be happy to hear them.

Cheers, Fina T-W

Here in Geoje, the blooming of the cherry blossoms signal the arrival of spring. Generally, the cherry blossoms are expected to reach their peak around April 4~11, about a week after they start to bloom.

Neungpo is one of the best places to enjoy the colours, but if you drive up the mountain roads, the view of blossoming trees on the roadsides are amazing.

If you are fancy to travel, here will be several places around South Korea to enjoy Cherry Blossom season this year.

Hwa-gae Market (Hadong)

The flower way of Hwagae is a road well-known road streching for 4 km cherry blossoms. It is so called a wedding way because young man and woman loving each other walk with their hands held on this way like a dream road and will live together for a long time. Thereupon, numerous young men and women walk on this romantic way with their hands held by taking an oath for love.

The cherry blossoms that bloomed like the white snow are embroidered on the 25 km interval of the clear stream of the Seomjin River and Hwagaedongcheon so that the brilliant things to see are provided to enjoy the mood of new spring and the various cultural events are held.

Moreover, you can taste somewhat fragrant spring greens of Mt. Jiri produced by the people of Hwagae village by themselves and enjoy the spring festival in the flower party where you can taste the hometown food such as Euneohoe, Jaecheopguk, and Chamgaetang.

Seomjin River Bank (Mt. Osan, Gurye)

Along the banks of the Seomjin River, flowing around Muncheok Township, Gurye-gun, cherry trees stretch for some 11km. Golden bell flowers are planted together along the cherry blossom path, and when the cherry trees blossom, the landscape is covered with whites, yellows, greens and blue, creating a unique view second to none. Located close to Mt. Osan on the foothills of Mt. Baekunsan, and the legendary Saseongam hermitage, the festival attracts numerous visitors every year.

The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime affairs named the cherry tree path one of Korea's 100 most beautiful roads. The Seomjin Riverbank Cherry Blossom Festival is held in early April, when the cherry trees are in full blossom. Various performances and experiences invite the tourist, including walks down the cherry blossom path and the cherry blossom concert.

Jinhae

Also famous as the capital of cherry blossom in South Korea, every year this naval port city held Gunhangje

Festival. The Naval academy is closed for public but in this festival people get the chance to see the powerful and polished military band marching show in full dress. Several places in Jinhae will be turned into a museum and exhibition center, displaying turtle ship, navy vessels and photographs. Some hands-on activities also offered like trying naval uniform and cruise riding.

One of the top attractions is the 800 meter section of flowers on the railroad by Gyeonghwa station and 1.5 km flower streams. With 100 years of flowering cherry blossom trees scattered around, visiting Jinhae during cherry blossom time will leave a special memory.

Busan

There flowers blossoming across the city. The peak is the first weekend of April. Some of the area you’d like to check out are : Flower Village (Kkonmaeul) in Seou-gu, Gangseo Nakdong Riverside - Daejeo Ecological Park Cheonghak - Haedoji Reservoir in Yeongdo-gu Moontan Road Walking Event - Haeundae

Seoul

The best place to see the flowering cherry trees in Seoul is along Yeouiseo-ro. This year, Yeouido Spring Flowers Festival will be held on 9-15 April 2015. However, beautiful blossoms can also be enjoyed throughout the city, from Gangnam, Itaewon to all palaces.

Bleaching (whitening) Teeth Hello!

I’d like to explain more about how to whiten the teeth. There are two ways of vital bleaching. One is that the patient wears a teeth bleaching tray all night long at home. This is called home bleaching. The other way of bleaching is done in the clinic, under special light whitening agents are applied to the teeth. This is called office or clinic bleaching.

The differences between home and clinic bleaching are the concentration of agents and with or without catalyst. The concentration of agents for home bleaching is lower so it takes longer. Office/clinic bleaching is more efficient.

When only 1 or 2 teeth are discoloured, usually the reason of which is pulp necrosis (death), after root canal treatment, a dentist can perform a non-vital bleaching. The agent of non-vital bleaching are the same as those of vital bleaching. Whitening agents are put in the chamber of crown, or head of the tooth. 2-3 times might be enough.

When the tooth is discolouration is deep, the above methods may not be sufficient. In some cases, laminate, all-ceramic crowns, and other prosthodontics methods are recommended.

Visit the dental clinic and your dentist can tell you the appropriate treatment plan for you.

Could you tell us what vision you have in operating the hospital?

Yes. I have always wanted to live like Jesus Christ, who healed the sick and loved the weak. I thought that offering good-quality medical service for all of Geoje citizens is one way to follow his life. And that's why I opened 'The Good News Hospital' and 'Sung Nyum Medical Foundation' about 10 years ago. Also, it has been 2 years since I built 'The Clear Well Hospital'. And still, I keep trying to develop the quality of services and provide a service that can be a comfort to the sick.

Regarding helping the weak, is there anything you've done for people across the board?

It's no wonder that we should give attention to other countries in this globalized world. We, Seong Nyum Foundation, built schools and churches in countries where opportunities for high education are not available to all people. For instance, we built a kindergarten and a church in the Phillipines, an elementary and middle school in Kenya, and a high school in Cambodia. I think that 'praying for them' is necessary, but it is not enough. There must be ‘a real help’. Offering better medical services and high quality education, I think, is one way.

What do you put an emphasis on in operating Clear Well Hospital?

Clear Well Hospital is creating an extension to 500-beds. Also, we are discussing construction of 'an emergency center', which is a higher facility than 'emergencies' in any

other hospitals in Geoje. Residents of Geoje have nothing to do but go to

Busan or Changwon for getting higher quality treatment at

bigger hospitals in a case of a serious emergency. Having to travel to Busan or Changwon, we risk losing ‘the golden time’ (the important time for treating some conditions). That is because there are no 'emergency centers' in Geoje. Our upcoming

emergency center, where 24-hour doctors are

available, will prevent that ‘medical expedition’ to other

areas. Moreover, the cerebrovascular diseases and heart

problem center which is being planned will take an important part in providing that golden time for patients in Geoje.

Also, we are trying to prepare to accommodate foreign patients. From April, we are willing to hire an English interpreter moving around the hospital. At this point, GIC could be a helpful messenger that can communicate opinions of foreigners living in Geoje.

Do you have anything you want to say to our readers?

First of all, I know many foreigners have difficulty finding appropriate hospitals. Clear Well Hospital is not perfect for them yet. But anytime you need our help, our doctors and other employees are willing to help with their own hearts. Also, if there is anything you want at our hospital, tell us through GIC. We will carefully listen to your voice. I hope Geoje will be like a hometown to everybody and that Clear Well Hospital will be a help for that. Thank you.

Look forward to see you all at GIC!

My husband and I had previously been living in Ulsan for 9 months before

we moved to Geoje in March to start a new project with Shell. So we have had experience with Korean culture/way of life and living as an expat and gaining an insight to life in Korea! But what

delighted me the most about moving to the island was the instant

support and information I received after posting a short message on the

Okpo mothers group asking everyone what was the best way to meet new people! Right away I was sent links and messages about coffee mornings, sewing classes, hiking and mums groups! This was something new to me as I never really felt like there was quite the same opportunities in Ulsan. Perhaps being a bigger city, the expat communities where there, but just spread out. Unlike Geoje which seemed to be so a close knit and it was so welcoming. Pauline introduced me to the GIC where I soon went along and meet some new and soon to be mums. It's always been a welcoming venue and I can't wait to see what the next instalment will be. I will definitely be making use of the Infants group once my baby finally arrives..... 2 weeks and counting!! ~ Leah Gill (Shell)

Before arriving in Geoje with my husband and 2 small children I had no understanding of what the island was like or what it offered. This caused many sleepless nights and apprehension. To

help I joined the Facebook group 'Okpo International Mums'. I

posted some of my questions and quickly were responded with all the answers I required.  Since then I have seen many questions posted from both existing residents and new comers. On this form I was told about the GIC so I went along with my kids. I couldn't believe the welcome I received from both staff and public. Instantly I felt welcome. I have met so many people through the centre and I regularly attend the tots group and I have also attend other courses ran through the centre. Overall, GIC has been and will continue to be a massive part of my Geoje experience. ~ Angela Grieve (Vantage Drilling)

I found the Geoje Coffee Morning Facebook page before joining my

husband in Geoje. From there I was introduced to the Okpo International Mum Facebook page and then the GIC and other Facebook pages about Geoje; which is extremely useful for me as a new comer. I was able to

obtain accurate and almost instant information on

when, where to get what and how. Even now, after more than 6 months, I am still constantly getting useful information from these sources about Geoje. Also, the activities organised by GIC comes in handy for those who are looking for stuff to do while in Geoje. ~ Janet Gerrard (SHI)

Moving to a different country, halfway across the world from home is a huge upheaval for anyone, let along a family of 5 with three young children. I was under the pump and stressed out trying to organise for the big move when Pauline Naylor kindly emailed me through an information pack that made things just that bit easier. The information helped me to decide what we needed to bring (and what we didn't), gave us an idea on what to expect when we arrived here and made us feel a whole lot more comfortable about the entire move. The GIC has been a huge help to myself and my family since before we even arrived on Geoje offering invaluable information, a place to meet up with people in exactly the same situation and a little bit of "home" in the foreign country we now call our home.

~ Kristi Barry

The information is received from the GIC has been very informative. I have been able to find places quite easy and as an expat it is so comforting that there is someone to reach out to.

“The tender friendships one gives up, on parting, leave their bite on the heart, but also a curious feeling of a treasure somewhere buried” – Antoine De Saint-Exupery.

This quote might sound too familiar and often so heartfelt to all those goodbyes we had to go through as an expat. At the start of every great expat friendship is the bitter sweet truth that it will lead to goodbyes one day. What begins as a wonderful adventure will stay back as cherished memories aching to relive that moment again.

Being a frequent mover with six quick moves over a span of nine years, I am always leaving and never left behind. But all this while, it had been just the adults moving and a toddler tagging along. Every move looked like an adventure with the hope of meeting and making new friends. In the recent past it has been much harder to move, especially when you have to watch your child go through this process. No matter how well they handle it, it is still painful. Our move from Dubai was the hardest, having settled in a school comfortably; our little champ had been way more social than me and was awesome in making and maintaining good friends. When the time came for our big move we were excited for a great new opportunity to explore and show him the world. Little did we realize that the kid tagging along had no idea why to move and disturb a settled life? It took a mighty lot of time to convince him about the wonderful big school he will go and the numerous hiking we will do together.

It came as no surprise that the move went smooth and my son adjusted very well. It was easier for him to make friends and share their common interests. But sadly it didn’t last long for him. This time around it was my champ staying behind while his friends moved on to greener pastures. Saying goodbyes was much harder for him this time around and it crumbled my heart to see him play alone. The goodbyes kept increasing with each passing season and my

son had sort of given up on anyone who didn’t turn up to school for a week. It sort of dawned on me that we have the famous clichéd “third culture kid” and it is going to be this way; and instead of running away from the term it would be much wiser to teach him to embrace it with joy. Now that’s much easier said than done. How do you explain to a kid the conflicting concept that the goodbyes get simultaneously tougher and easier as the years go by? As you get older the goodbyes get better, yet by the same notion, the older you are, the deeper the friendship, so the goodbyes tug even more at your heart.

It came as a surprise to me that it was my kid who showed me how to move on while cherishing your dear memories. Friends become so much a part of you that the distance doesn’t matter anymore. Kids learn very quickly the importance of communication and connecting with people. He taught me to cherish the present moment and leave behind all my inhibitions of a looming future where good bye is eminent. We all now, as a family, know too well that even if people leave, grow apart or lose contact over the years, the friendships we had were true and deep while they lasted. And that’s why even after so many goodbyes we are still ready to let others in and to open ourselves to them. No matter how hard the goodbyes might be, the time spent with them is so worth it and we will gladly do it all over again.

Here’s to a lifetime of awesome friendships, cheers.

I come from Denmark which is considered to be a country as flat as a pancake. We – the Danes – don’t think it is that flat….but it is. We have a place called Sky Mountain (“Himmelbjerget” in Danish) which stands 147 meter above sea level. The highest point in the Kingdom of Denmark is Møllehøj and since it is 170 meter you can imagine that Danes in general aren’t use to climbing mountains. And that was the case for me when I moved to Geoje. I had never climbed any real mountains before my Korean adventure began and I had no idea to what extend that was going to change.

The first thing that started that change was when I ran into an experienced hiker. She dragged me along and never complained about my slow pace, my inexperience when it came to what to wear or pack in the back pack (note to self: remember to thank her for not complaining).

The next thing that made the mountain hiking escalade was when I realised how safe it is to hike here on Geoje and that it is impossible to

get really lost. The last thing that pushed my newfound love for exploring nature into being a serius hobby of mine was when Berta, my dog and best buddy, moved into our family. Not a day goes by whiteout Berta and I being out and about. Not always climbing a mountain but often we are…..and we both love it.

My hiking doesn’t follow a schedule. I sometimes plan where to go a day or two ahead but often I decide where to go when I get up in the morning. Many times I have used the Geoje Guide Book (I got mine from City Hall in Gohyun) as inspiration for choosing my hike of the day. In that guide book is pictures, locations and several hiking routes for the 11 tallest peaks on Geoje. Sometimes Berta and I go alone and sometime we go with a group.

During my time hiking I have found out that it is very individual what drives and motivate people to climb up a mountain. Some people want to become or stay fit. Some do it because they enjoy nature or because they enjoy photographing. Some do it to physical challenges their body or simply just because they enjoy seeing the world from above.

In many levels hiking require that people listen to their body and do things the way that makes the hike as comfortable as possible in order to go on for a long time. I have hiked with people who prefer using hiking poles and some that would never use them.

MY HIKING IN GEOJEby : Rikke Agner Joergensen ”I´m never getting up there!” was my

thoughts while I slowly, sweating and cursing, trying to climb up a mountain on Geoje for the very first time.

Page 19: Geoje News April 2015

Some people like hiking in trainers and some prefer wearing hiking boots. Also the preferred weather conditions is individual- some thrives with hot weather and some in the cold. Some people eat a lot of food along the way where others only take a little snack.

I can tell you that it took me many hikes to find the way to do things that suited me the best….and I still make adjustments.

One thing I found very important while I hike strenuous hikes is to be true to my pace. No matter how fast my hiking buddies are going I stick to my preferred pace. Otherwise I may not last all the way. Or going too fast takes the joy out of the hike…..and enjoying it is the key component for me.

I also have learned that it really makes my day when I am out hiking is when I see some unexpected wildlife. Being a biologist I take great pleasure in nature in general and the fauna in particularly.

A lot of people don’t know what kind of animals, big and small, we have here on Geoje so to mention just a few I have seen I can tell you we have deer, squirrels, wild boars, snakes (venomous and constrictors), raccoon dogs, praying mantis, frogs, moles, stag beetles and vultures here. I am sure that other hikers can continue my list.

Unfortunately is my time here on Geoje coming to an end and so is my hiking in the Korean mountains. There is no doubt that I will miss it a lot but who knows….I might me back. In this unpredictable ship building business everything can happen.

The popularity of the recently released film, 'Kingsman: The Secret Service', has resulted in a renewed interest in men's style and more specifically, tailored suits. To lend an air of authenticity to the film, the suits worn by Colin Firth's character were bespoke and made by a master tailor in London's traditional center of fine tailoring, Savile Row.

Anyone with an interest in men's tailored clothing will have heard the terms 'made-to-measure' and 'bespoke,' terms which are often used interchangeably even though they shouldn't be.

First of all, as is true with any type of garment, tailored suits and shirts are also borne from a pattern. In the pattern, however lies one of the biggest differences between bespoke and made-to-measure tailoring.

Namely, a made-to-measure suit is made when an individual's body measurements are applied to an existing pattern. For this reason, men might be flustered to find that a suit from one tailor shop fits differently than a suit from somewhere else even though bith suits were 'custom-made.' The reason for this is most likely the difference in patterns from one shop to another. For example, older patterns may be boxier in shape, while newer patterns taking into account more modern styles may have a sleeker line.

In the case of bespoke, however, there is no existing pattern, thus from one's measurements is created an entirely new pattern which can be used again and again whenever a new suit is needed. Such an approach to suit making means that each and every one of the person's unique body nuances can be addressed during suit

construction and then incorporated into the finished suit.

Furthermore, while the stitching in a made-to-measure suit or shirt is done on a sewing machine, in the case of bespoke tailoring, all the stitching is done by hand, right down to the button holes.

The individually requested details of a suit also differ according to which method of tailoring is selected. As when selecting options on a fine automobile, the amount of personal customization in a bespoke suit is significantly greater than for one that is made to measure. Do you need a hidden pocket in your suit jacket for a concealed firearm or a whiskey flask? Then you'd better opt for bespoke.

How does the fit differ? Without going into too much technical detail, one of the primary differences among made-to-measure and bespoke tailoring is the amount of volume in the jacket. Bespoke jackets have significantly more volume, while they also drape more naturally from the shoulders. This results in a look which more beautifully complements the wearer's shape.

Considering the amount of additional work and time which goes into a bespoke suit, the cost of a bespoke garment can be much higher than that for a made-to-measure garment.

Armed with the aforementioned information, if a tailor tells you that you are getting a "bespoke" suit for what seems like a suspiciously low price, you should ask a lot of questions to determine if he or she is really offering a bespoke suit or one that is actually made to measure.
