What is Geography?
• Geography provides an effective method
for asking questions about places on the
earth and their relationships to the people
who live there.
• “Geo” is also Latin for earth.
• “Graphy” is Greek for graph or map.
• So…Geography is also the mapping of the
earth.
The Five Themes of Geography
Theme 1: Location
• Location
– Position on the earth’s surface.
– Every place on the earth can be located by
either absolute or relative terms.
Absolute Location Absolute location the use of a network of
horizontal and vertical lines on globes and maps to
find exact points anywhere on the earth. It also
includes an exact physical address.
Example 1: DPJH is located at 410 E 9th
St, Deer Park, TX
Example 2: New York City is located at 40
degrees North latitude and 74 degrees West
longitude
Relative Location
The use of cardinal and intermediate
directions in giving location is the relative
location. Use of landmarks is also helpful
in relative location.
Example 1: Austin is approximately 50
miles Northeast of New Braunfels.
Example 2: DPJH is located next to the
Church.

Theme 2: Place
• Place
Every place on earth has its own physical
and human features.
Physical Features: mountains, rivers, forests,
rainforest, desert, floods, hurricanes, etc.
Human Features: types of homes, religion,
language, education, clothing, foods, ethnic
groups, family size
DESCRIBE is the key word in place.

Theme 3:
Human Environment Interaction
• Human/Environment Interaction (HEI)
The interaction of humans with the
environment. This interaction can have both
good and bad outcomes. This is one of the
most important factors in geography.

HEI: Adapt
• Adapt means how do people change their
lives to fit the land.
• Example: People in the Congo wear thin
cotton clothes all year long because of the
warm climate.
• Example: People in the Congo make
thatched roofs for their huts because of
the vegetation present in the area.
Modify
• Modify means how do people change the
land to fit their needs.
Example: The Mormons, when they settled
in Utah, adapted to the dry landscape by
developing irrigation techniques.
Depend
• People depend on the land.
• Example: People depend on the land and
its resources for food, clothing, housing
and transportation.

Theme 4: Movement
Movement has become a daily part of our
lives. Not only does man move through
migration, but information, goods, and
ideas are also moved.

Process Break #4: What are examples of movement that you see how the
map?
Theme 5: Regions
*Regions make the study of geography more
manageable. The world is often divided into
regions or areas, based on certain physical
features – land-type or plant and animal life.
*The world is also divided into regions based on
certain human characteristics – such as the
way people are governed or the kind of
language they speak.
The five themes ask these questions:
• Location – Where is it?
• Place – What is it like there? (both physical and human)
• HEI – What is the relationship between people and their environment?
• Movement – How are people and places connected?
• Region – How is a place similar to and different from other places?
