What is Geography?

• Geography provides an effective method

for asking questions about places on the

earth and their relationships to the people

who live there.

• “Geo” is also Latin for earth.

• “Graphy” is Greek for graph or map.

• So…Geography is also the mapping of the

earth.

– Every place on the earth can be located by

either absolute or relative terms.

Absolute Location Absolute location the use of a network of

horizontal and vertical lines on globes and maps to

find exact points anywhere on the earth. It also

includes an exact physical address.

Example 1: DPJH is located at 410 E 9th

St, Deer Park, TX

Example 2: New York City is located at 40

degrees North latitude and 74 degrees West

longitude

The use of cardinal and intermediate

directions in giving location is the relative

location. Use of landmarks is also helpful

in relative location.

miles Northeast of New Braunfels.

Physical Features: mountains, rivers, forests,

rainforest, desert, floods, hurricanes, etc.

Human Features: types of homes, religion,

language, education, clothing, foods, ethnic

groups, family size

most important factors in geography.

• Adapt means how do people change their

lives to fit the land.

• Example: People in the Congo wear thin

cotton clothes all year long because of the

warm climate.

• Example: People in the Congo make

thatched roofs for their huts because of

the vegetation present in the area.

regions or areas, based on certain physical

features – land-type or plant and animal life.
