December 2015

Dear Parents/Guardians,

It is hard to believe that the 2015 year is almost over and winter break is only a few weeks away. It was wonderful to see so

many parents/guardians here for the conferences. I know that your interest and support in your children’s education has a pos-

itive impact on their learning. If you were unable to come in at the scheduled time teachers are happy to reschedule appoint-

ments to ensure that you and your child have this opportunity.

Our grade seven students and teachers will be going to Camp Cedarwood this month for winter camp. This is a wonderful

opportunity for students and staff to get to know each other and build on relationships that will last for the next three years.

During the month of November the Aboriginal Education Committee led us in celebrating the Universal value of Courage.

During the month classrooms discussed the attributes of courage, heard quotes and demonstrated acts of courage. Each class

selected two students who had demonstrated courage during the month. These students were acknowledged on the morning

announcements and received certificates of recognition. During the month of December we will be focusing on the Universal

Value of Respect.

Our Human Rights Club is launching their first project for the school year- a winter clothing drive (NEW toques, mitts and

scarves) for the 2,000 refugees coming to Manitoba from Syria or neighbouring countries. We will run the drive until Dec. 17.

All donations will be given to Welcome Place. Students are encouraged to donate new toques, mitts and scarves or cash dona-

tions can be made. The Human Rights Committee will use the funds to purchase these items. The students created a Prezi

presentation which can be viewed at the following site: http://prezi.com/sjhxl6xnm_ee/?

Disyembre 2015

announcements at certificates of recognition.

http://prezi.com/sjhxl6xnm_ee/?utm_campaign=share&utm_medium=copy&rc=ex0share

Due to popular demand by fans of the Japanese illustrating style, General Wolfe's The Super Fun Happy Anime Sunshine Club returned this school year, earlier than anticipat-ed! Every Tuesday after school, the growing group of talented, "genki", FANimes come to the art room to improve and perfect their anime drawing skills, watch anime TV shows and movies, read anime books, be mesmerized by YouTube speed drawing tutori-als and argue over which character is the most attractive. Due to the members' over-whelming enthusiasm for all things Japanese, this year students started learning basic Japanese vocabulary and how to write words in katakana. The Super Fun Happy Anime Sunshine Club's members think this club is SUGOI!

General Wolfe Aboriginal Students Association

Thank-you to all the staff for celebrating student success through the 7 teachings and thank-you to all the students who embraced the theme of Courage for the month of November. During the months of December and January we will focus on the teaching Respect. During the next two months there are several exciting activities planned:

· Drumming program for 15 students that combines both Aboriginal and African drumming.

· Aboriginal School of Dance has been invited to run a program in the school once a cycle

· One of our Grade 9 student leaders is busy recruiting students for Pow Wow dancing

All students should listen for announcements and attend the GWASA meetings on Day 6 at lunch.

Green Team News Thank-you to all the students and staff who turned in their old cell phones for recycling during the month of November. Green team members are busy preparing grant applications to further beautify our school yard. Last year the Green Team received grant money to landscape the front of our school. This year we are applying for funds to add planters to the school property that runs along Ellice Avenue. Students are working with the theme of “Gardens of Knowledge” and designing a green space that displays what knowledge would look like in a garden.

Mine Craft and Robot Club We have started two new clubs that run most lunch hours (except days 3 and 6) in the computer lab. Thank-you to Mr. Richard Roberts (Educational Technology Support Teacher) for as-sisting us in getting started with the Minecraft club and running our first session. Mr. Roberts will be visiting our school on December 8

th and 11

th. Students are encouraged

to think about what they want to build and collaborate on during the Minecraft sessions. New students are welcome to join, please listen for announcements or see Ms. McPherson (Room 149) if you have any questions.
